Chapter 7: The Labor-First Sixties
Gu Yu noticed that his wife’s eyelashes trembled, her beautiful apricot-shaped eyes wide open, with red rims indicating she was almost in tears from fear. He felt a pang in his heart.
His fierce gaze locked onto the slovenly and untidy man who was Lin Yaozu, and he gently patted his wife’s back.
“Don’t be afraid; I’m here.”
He positioned himself in front of Lin Yaozu to block his approach.
His broad shoulders completely shielded his wife from view.
Gu Yu had a cold expression as he bent down, the warning clear in his eyes: “You! We need to talk!”
Lin Yaozu shrank back in fear; it had been a while since he’d seen Gu Yu like this.
“I am your father-in-law! What’s with this attitude!?”
Gu Yu directly grabbed the collar of his shirt, remaining silent as he pulled him towards the door with a sharp gaze. Lin Yaozu panicked and was dragged away.
“Stop! Lin Muqing is an ungrateful wolf; you don’t have anything to say?”
Lin Yaozu’s voice gradually faded away, and Gu Yu didn’t care where he was being taken.
Lin Muqing wiped away the non-existent tears and returned home, barely acknowledging her parents.
She had no idea what Gu Yu was doing, but her original parents hadn’t come for a long time.
She clicked into the education fund subsidy group, where she had bought some special fruit for morning sickness.
“Can I just eat this straight?” It looked somewhat like a snowy pear in appearance, but rounder, resembling something sweet to eat, exuding a very pleasant aroma.
System: [Yes, you can eat it whole, including the skin and seeds.]
She finished it in a few bites.
The taste was delightful, sweet and sour, making her want to eat more, but she was cautious and didn’t dare to overindulge, afraid of side effects.
By this time, it was noon, and after finishing, she drowsily slept on the bed.
By evening, she was very hungry and ended up eating five bowls of rice, shocking Gu Yu’s parents and grandparents.
Gu Yu helped her serve the vegetables and meat, his brows furrowing deeper.
“Is it an upset stomach or something? Why are you eating so much? Is it because of the baby?”
Lin Muqing finally realized that eating five bowls of rice didn’t feel overindulgent, her face suddenly flushed with embarrassment as she put down her chopsticks: “I just had a bit of sour dates earlier, so my appetite is large.”
“Don’t just eat rice; have some meat too, or else you’ll end up feeling bloated. Wait a moment, let it digest, then eat some more,” Gu Yu’s mother chided, and suddenly, Grandma Gu gave her a glance, making Gu Yu’s mother confused.
Back in their room, Gu Yu rubbed her belly gently. “Are you still hungry?”
His words hit home, and Lin Muqing felt embarrassed, lowering her head as she felt shame for being such a glutton—could it be the fruit’s side effects?
System: [The host does not have any side effects.]
“I’m not hungry; I just don’t dare eat anymore,” Lin Muqing yawned, a hint of tears in her eyes, her eyelids heavy as she sank into bed, not bothering to open them anymore.
“I’m too tired; I’m going to sleep now,” she murmured softly.
“Go take a bath first.” Gu Yu rubbed her head gently, the drowsy look on his wife making her seem so sweet, and he leaned down to kiss her forehead.
“Mm.”
Gu Yu returned with a basin of warm water. By this time, his wife was already sleeping soundly, and he smiled as he left the room, his shadow enveloping her upper half.
He picked her up in a gentle embrace, resting her head against him. The dark hair cascaded like a galaxy, and he carried her towards the bathing area.
Lin Muqing remained unaware, waking up feeling refreshed.
She was quite hungry at first and ended up eating five bowls of rice at every meal.
In addition to regular meals, she had snacks at ten in the morning and four in the afternoon, with late-night snacks as well. That added up to six meals a day, yet she didn’t gain weight.
System: [This kid eats too much.]
Lin Muqing: I feel like my teeth are wearing out; what can I do if I’m still unsatisfied?
Despite everything, she still went to work, avoiding any tasks that would put a strain on her waist, handling easier jobs like sorting pig feed.
Additionally, Gu Yu would help her with chores, earning credits for both of them with his work.
He enjoyed doing the more laborious tasks for her, always smiling and cheerful.
After a month, she only put on one additional pound, but where did all that food go!?
That night.
Gu Yu finished bathing.
He entered the room wearing only a pair of black boxers, droplets of water clinging to his bronzed chest, rolling down his eight-pack abs and v-line…
His triangular physique looked like something a handsome comic book character would have, incredibly enticing.
Lin Muqing, propped up on the bed, had her gaze glued to him.
She half-stood, wrapping her arms around his slim waist, looking up at the enticing curve of his throat from this angle.
It had been a month since they last…
“Are you not going to…?”
“Wife.” Gu Yu grabbed her arm around him tightly, pulling her into his embrace, his deep and fiery gaze lingering on her, but she wouldn’t let him touch her.
Lin Muqing’s indulgent yet confused gaze collided with his, and she almost stuttered as she spoke in a low voice.
“I’m pregnant. That’s why I’m not letting you do anything.”
Gu Yu froze in that instant, beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
“Pregnant? How do you know?” He was taken aback and sat down on the bed while pulling her onto his lap, looking down at her belly with narrowed eyes.
His wife’s appetite over this month had changed.
The floral short-sleeved dress she wore highlighted her curves, concealing her pale belly which didn’t show much.
Her long, fair legs dangled, swaying and making him restless.
“Is it just one…?”
“Let’s go to the town hospital tomorrow,” Gu Yu said excitedly, though still frowning slightly, he tucked a strand of her soft hair behind her ear, hugging her tightly and accommodating her on the bed.
She rolled over snugly against him.
“Wow.”
As they both lay down, he held her firmly in his embrace.
“Touch it.”
“Mm.”
His hoarse and deep voice resonated softly.
…
The next day, they found a doctor in town to check her pulse, and he recommended an ultrasound, as the village doctor was not trustworthy.
After running through the exam, the doctor wore a bright smile: “Yes, you are pregnant, and it looks like it’s been two months. It may not be just one.”
Gu Yu’s already worried expression deepened.
“How many are there?” Lin Muqing exclaimed, shocked, her thoughts racing—was it twins?
“Only by about two months can we tell such details.”
System: [I didn’t think two months would be so revealing!]
