Chapter 76: It’s not his fault…
Lu Jinhai seemed confused, pausing before asking:
“Mrs. Ouyang, what do you mean by that?”
Su Yiren’s gaze swept across Bai Xiuping and Ouyang Shasha, a sense of unease creeping into her heart.
Sure enough, Mrs. Ouyang smiled and said:
“A friend of mine works at the Civil Affairs Bureau. She saw Mr. Lu there the other day and wanted to greet him personally, but seeing his gloomy face, she didn’t approach…”
As she spoke, she suddenly realized she might have said something wrong, and quickly apologized with an innocent expression:
“Oh, did I misunderstand something? Maybe Mr. Lu went to the Civil Affairs Bureau for work! I’m so sorry…”
Although everyone present had a good relationship with the Lu family, upon hearing this, they couldn’t help but feel a twinge of doubt.
The Civil Affairs Bureau? Gloomy face?
Could it be… that Lu Yunting was going to get a divorce?
Upon hearing this, Sun Xiaoxia’s eyes lit up. She dramatically covered her mouth, exclaiming:
“Oh my god! Isn’t Yunting going to get a divorce?” She quickly turned to Su Yiren, asking incredulously:
“Yiren, is this true?”
Su Yiren instinctively clenched her fists, mentally cursing these two women from head to toe.
Just when she was about to regain her freedom, they chose this moment to bring this up. How could she respond to this!
Lu Yunting was nowhere to be found, and now all the pressure was on her. It was a real headache.
Jiang Jinyun was also taken aback by this. She quickly glanced at Su Yiren, noticing that while she remained expressionless, she didn’t immediately deny it. A chill ran down her spine.
It seemed like they really had problems…
However, this wasn’t the time to ask. Jiang Jinyun suppressed her panic and said to Sun Xiaoxia:
“Second sister-in-law, don’t spread rumors! Yunting and Yiren are doing fine. You can see that, can’t you?” Then she turned to Bai Xiuping, saying with a smile:
“Mrs. Ouyang, let’s not talk about unfounded rumors, shall we?”
Bai Xiuping secretly rolled her eyes, apologizing again, but her heart was filled with glee.
After all, her words had successfully sown seeds of doubt in many people’s minds, achieving her goal.
Lu Yunting’s refusal to divorce Su Yiren was no good for her daughter.
Therefore, she had to give them a strong push, bring this matter to light, and force them to divorce quickly!
This way, Shasha would have the chance to replace Su Yiren and marry into the Lu family.
Lu Jinhai, who had remained silent, looked from one person to another, his gaze finally landing on the silent Su Yiren. His eyes dimmed slightly.
The hand resting on his knee slowly clenched, but his face remained unchanged. He smiled and said:
“Divorce is out of the question. I’ll ask Yunting later if he has any work to do there.” As he spoke, he picked up his teacup and took a sip.
Some perceptive people noticed the awkward atmosphere and, using the late hour as an excuse, bid farewell to Lu Jinhai.
Ouyang Shasha didn’t want to leave, but Bai Xiuping dragged her away forcefully.
In the empty living room, only the Lu family members remained.
Lu Jinhai slowly sipped his tea, his lowered eyes filled with swirling thoughts.
After a while, he put down his teacup, glancing at Sun Xiaoxia, who was craning her neck to watch the drama unfold.
“Second daughter-in-law.”
“Dad, what are your orders!” Sun Xiaoxia immediately responded.
“Go back.”
“Huh?” Sun Xiaoxia blinked in surprise, then looked at the others. The smile on her face became somewhat unnatural.
“I have nothing to do at home. I’d rather stay and keep you company. It’s a birthday, so it should be lively…”
Lu Jinhai’s face instantly darkened.
“I told you to go back!”
Sun Xiaoxia was frightened and quickly got up, awkwardly saying:
“Okay, okay… I’ll go check on Xiaotong. She’s been suffering from morning sickness lately…”
After Sun Xiaoxia left with her mumbling, the other Lu family members also realized something was wrong and left one after another.
The vast living room was left with only Lu Jinhai, Jiang Jinyun, and Su Yiren.
Lu Jinhai asked the servants to call Lu Yunting, then sat there silently drinking tea, not uttering a word, not even glancing at Su Yiren.
Su Yiren felt inexplicably nervous.
She subconsciously looked at Jiang Jinyun, noticing that she was also closing her eyes, her brow furrowed.
The atmosphere was unusually silent, and Su Yiren didn’t like this oppressive feeling. She thought it was best to tell the truth.
She sat up straight, just about to call out “Grandpa,” when she heard Lu Jinhai say in a low voice:
“Wait until he comes back.”
Su Yiren had no choice but to shut her mouth and continue waiting.
It was unknown how long they waited, but the sound of steady footsteps came from outside the door, and Jiang Jinyun instantly opened her eyes.
Lu Yunting had just finished dealing with a file and was rushing over when he heard the servants say that his father was waiting for him in the living room.
He assumed the banquet had ended and hurried over, only to find an unusual atmosphere upon entering.
He glanced at Su Yiren, asking with his eyes. Su Yiren just shook her head.
Before he could think further, he heard Lu Jinhai say in a deep voice:
“Kneel down!”
Lu Yunting was startled. Seeing Lu Jinhai’s grim expression, he didn’t know what was going on, but he knelt down straight.
Lu Jinhai looked at him with a heavy face and asked:
“Have you forgotten the Lu family rules?”
Lu Yunting replied with lowered eyes and a submissive tone:
“I haven’t forgotten.”
Lu Jinhai held his teacup and asked:
“What are the last three rules?”
Lu Yunting was stunned for a moment, then, as if he understood everything, he turned his head and glanced at Su Yiren. His eyes were filled with coldness and a hint of mockery.
He calmly said:
“You cannot keep a mistress outside; illegitimate children cannot enter the Lu family; you cannot divorce unless your wife is of bad character.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Lu Jinhai suddenly raised his hand and threw the teacup, smashing it against Lu Yunting’s shoulder.
Lu Yunting took the blow without a sound, remaining kneeling straight.
“You scoundrel!” Lu Jinhai cursed, “What were you doing at the Civil Affairs Bureau the other day!”
Lu Yunting pursed his lips, lowered his gaze, remained silent for a few seconds, and confessed:
“Divorce.”
Lu Jinhai slammed his hand on the table, stood up abruptly, and pointed at his nose, shouting:
“You unfilial son! Have you completely forgotten the Lu family rules!”
“What’s wrong with Yiren? Why do you want to divorce her? Tell me!”
Lu Yunting didn’t raise his head and replied: “It’s not her fault, it’s all my fault.”
“Alright! You have backbone!” Seeing that he didn’t try to defend himself at all, Lu Jinhai angrily shouted to the servants, “Go get the whip! I’m going to teach this scoundrel a lesson today!”
The servants responded nervously, but they didn’t dare move.
If it had been Lu Yun 瀚 kneeling in the living room today, they would have gone to get the whip. That troublemaker had been beaten countless times!
But this was Lu Yunting!
The young master who had rarely made mistakes throughout his life!
Seeing that they didn’t move, Lu Jinhai roared:
“Hurry up!”
The servants were terrified and immediately turned around, running away like a gust of wind.
Su Yiren saw that the situation was not good. Grandpa seemed to be genuinely angry, and she felt a little worried.
She glanced at the silent Lu Yunting, then at Jiang Jinyun, who was also silent, and pursed her lips.
After a quick mental struggle, Su Yiren suddenly stood up and said softly to Lu Jinhai:
“Grandpa, it’s not his fault…”
