Chapter 106: Wasn’t Last Night Enough of a Surprise?
Lu Yunting’s smile faltered, and he turned to look at his second uncle, Lu Zhensheng, who was sitting across from him.
He had been on a business trip abroad for a while, originally to negotiate a project, but he ended up returning empty-handed.
Perhaps because he was holding back his anger, he had been looking at everyone with displeasure lately, and his words were harsher than usual.
In the Lu family, apart from the old man, he was the oldest and most senior, yet the position of General Manager had fallen to Lu Yunting. His frustration was understandable.
He had always disliked Lu Yunting, but the latter’s strong work ethic made it impossible for him to find fault. Now, he finally had a chance to mock him, and he wouldn’t miss it.
However, Lu Yunting wasn’t someone who would be easily swayed. He simply paused for a moment before casually retorting:
“Second Uncle, the kind of woman you’re talking about, she’d probably only be good at giving birth, right?”
Lu Zhensheng’s eyebrows shot up, and he was about to speak, but Lu Yunting added:
“And even if she did give birth, she’d probably only give birth to a good-for-nothing.”
While the first sentence wasn’t particularly targeted, the second one was clearly a veiled insult.
Everyone present knew that Lu Zhensheng had a good-for-nothing son.
He had been a wastrel since childhood, with a chaotic private life. Rumor had it that his current wife was someone he had accidentally gotten pregnant, and she had gone to the company to cry, make a scene, and threaten suicide, forcing them to get married.
Even though he was about to become a father, he was still quite promiscuous. If he hadn’t been born into the Lu family, he would have probably been beaten up by now.
Lu Zhensheng’s face turned pale with anger, and the retort he had been about to make got stuck in his throat, leaving him feeling humiliated.
A distinguished guest present quickly intervened, raising his glass and saying:
“Today is the Lu Group’s anniversary celebration. Let’s all raise a toast!”
Since someone had given him an out, Lu Yunting naturally wouldn’t continue to pick on Lu Zhensheng. After all, there were others watching, and he couldn’t overdo it.
Lu Zhensheng snorted coldly.
This guest was a long-standing major client of the Lu Group, so he had to give him some face. He reluctantly raised his glass as well.
Steven’s Chinese was limited, and he didn’t understand the Lu family’s internal conflicts. He was only interested in the food on the table.
As one delicious dish after another was served, he repeatedly gave a thumbs-up, using his patchwork Chinese to praise them enthusiastically:
“Wow! This dish! Amazing!”
“Delicious! Chinese delicious!”
“What kind of god cooked this!”
“I am in awe!”
The other guests also chimed in:
“It’s really good. I rarely get to eat such exquisite and delicious food.”
“Mr. Lu, I heard you invited the God of Cooking this time?”
Lu Yunting smiled, “The God of Cooking is not feeling well, so he specially sent his disciple.”
“Is it that mysterious female chef?”
“I’ve heard of her too. I heard she never shows her face, but she’s been praised by foreign media as amazing. They say her skills have surpassed her master.”
Lu Zhensheng sneered:
“No matter how skilled she is, she’s still just a chef, and a woman at that.”
This statement made many people frown slightly.
What’s wrong with being a woman?
Can’t a woman be a chef?
Can’t a woman become a top figure in her field?
What kind of ridiculous logic is that!
No wonder he couldn’t take over the Lu Group. With his kind of worldview, it was wise of the old man not to hand the company over to him.
However, everyone was there as invited guests, and even if they found his words unpleasant, they didn’t want to publicly correct him.
Lu Yunting, however, wasn’t willing to indulge his bad habits. He said to everyone in a calm voice:
“To invite this chef’s disciple, I spent a lot of money.” He held up five fingers and smiled, “She casually cooks a banquet, and her fee is higher than many people’s annual salary.”
Everyone gasped. They didn’t expect the Lu Group to be so generous!
Ah, having money and power, this is how you live life to the fullest.
After finishing his words, Lu Yunting glanced at Lu Zhensheng, seeing that his face was extremely ugly, likely because he was associating it with himself.
At his age, he was only a division manager in the Lu Group, with an annual income just over a million. But the “female chef” he was so dismissive of earned several times his salary for a single meal. Even if he added his share dividends, it wouldn’t be as much as hers. Wasn’t this a slap in the face?
Lu Zhensheng angrily picked up his glass and drank it down in one gulp:
“I’m curious to see what kind of female chef can earn such a high salary!”
While his words weren’t very polite, everyone present was also curious and said:
“Yeah, I heard the God of Cooking taught her all his skills, clearly treating her as his successor.”
“I heard this female disciple is very beautiful!”
“What’s the use of being beautiful if she’s just a chef? As long as the food is good, that’s all that matters!”
“You don’t understand. Food cooked by a beautiful chef tastes even better!”
Everyone laughed knowingly.
Lu Yunting was actually quite curious himself. He had previously asked Yan Fei to contact this female chef, hoping to meet her before the banquet.
But Yan Fei had mumbled that she only wanted to cook the banquet well and wasn’t interested in such formalities.
Lu Yunting had to respect her wishes and didn’t interfere further. He didn’t even know which room she was staying in.
Encouraged by everyone, he thought for a moment and called Yan Fei over from a distance, whispering:
“Go check if the kitchen is done. If you can, can you ask the God of Cooking’s disciple to come out and show her face?”
Yan Fei hesitated for a moment before immediately agreeing and turned to head towards the kitchen.
Most of the dishes for the banquet have been served, and Suiren is working on the last “masterpiece” – the vast iceberg.
This was something her master had specifically asked her to make.
A five-meter-long ice sculpture.
She had already completed most of it yesterday. Today, she just needed to handle some details.
When she finished the last cut, the chefs gathered around, applauding.
“Miss Su is truly amazing!”
“Your knife skills are superb, the sculpture is lifelike. I admire you!”
“No wonder you’re the God of Cooking’s successor. Just your carving skills alone are something we can only dream of, haha!”
Su Yiren smiled slightly, humbly saying:
“You’re all too kind, seniors.”
Yan Fei happened to walk in and saw the ice sculpture, his eyes widening in admiration. He couldn’t stop praising it.
Su Yiren brushed off the ice flakes on her sleeve, her expression devoid of any pride, as if they were praising someone else.
“Mr. Yan, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving.”
“Don’t leave yet!” Yan Fei quickly pulled her aside and whispered, “Mr. Lu asked me to check if you were done and wanted to meet you.”
“No need.” Su Yiren’s voice was calm, “There’s no need.”
Yan Fei was surprised and asked:
“Didn’t you come here to give him a surprise?”
Su Yiren smiled, “Wasn’t last night enough of a surprise?”
Remembering the chaotic night, Yan Fei felt a headache coming on, “But many guests want to see the God of Cooking’s disciple.”
Su Yiren didn’t care, “I sell my skills, not my face. What difference does it make if they see me or not?”
