Catastrophe Descends: I Scavenge in the Dungeon Chapter 28: Sudden Upheaval

She was different from those people—she didn’t diet and loved to eat rich foods.

Carrying her plate, Ji He sat at an empty table and picked up a small piece of steak with her chopsticks, placing it in her mouth.

As she swallowed, she nodded in satisfaction. It was indeed delicious—lean yet tender, incredibly flavorful.

She couldn’t say whether it was the work of a five-star chef, but she knew good food when she tasted it.

Focusing on her meal, Ji He quickly finished her plate. Just as she was about to get up for a second serving, the lights suddenly went out.

The room was instantly plunged into darkness.

Gasps from women and reassuring voices from men filled the air.

Ji He took out her phone and turned on the flashlight.

A few others did the same, and people instinctively stood up and moved toward the exit to check what was going on.

Ji He, however, didn’t rush. Instead, she turned toward the buffet table and carefully covered all the food trays with their lids.

She hadn’t finished eating yet—what if bugs got into the food in the dark? Then what was she supposed to do?

Afterward, she walked to the drinks station, grabbed two bottles, and leisurely returned to her seat, sipping on one.

It was just a power outage. Nothing unusual.

She opened her phone to search for information on the situation.

Soon, she found out that due to the extreme heat outside, City H had initiated widespread power cuts. The area she was in was affected.

The government had dispatched repair crews, but there was no estimated time for restoration.

Ji He put her phone away, finished her drink, and opened the chat channel of her game.

Many people were talking about apocalyptic theories, while some were discussing going out to take advantage of the blackout.

When power and morality don’t match, situations like this tend to arise.

Ji He read for a while before closing the chat and sitting quietly, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness. Only then did she slowly stand and make her way toward the exit.

In just a short time, everyone else had already left.

After all, with no electricity, there was no reason to stay in the dark.

This particular room had no windows due to its design, making the darkness suffocating. With the air conditioning off, the temperature had already risen by at least five degrees and was still climbing.

Wiping the sweat from her forehead, Ji He cautiously moved along the wall.

She turned up the brightness of her phone’s flashlight and carefully navigated her way out. Earlier, the experience hall had been full of people, but now, it was completely empty.

Avoiding furniture, she moved forward. Just before reaching a corner, she suddenly heard the sound of shattering glass.

Instinctively, Ji He turned off her flashlight.

She crouched down and peeked out cautiously.

Ahead, a burly man with tattoos on his neck was wielding a massive hammer, violently smashing the glass doors of a pharmaceutical company.

Inside, several people shone their flashlights on him, yelling threats for him to leave.

But the man ignored them, continuing his relentless assault on the glass.

Though the glass looked sturdy, it soon cracked under the hammer’s force, breaking open a large hole. The man strode inside, and immediately, the sounds of a struggle and screams erupted.

“What are you doing?! This is a crime! Do you realize that?!”

“Call the police! I’m warning you!”

“The police?! The apocalypse is here—go ahead, try calling them! You ordinary people don’t understand anything!”

Bang! Bang! Bang!

“Ahhhhhh!”

Ji He crouched behind a sign, frozen in place, chilled by the terrified screams inside.

What was going on?!

The power had just gone out, and someone was already committing robbery?!

Should she leave?

But with no electricity, the elevators wouldn’t work. What if she ran into trouble taking the stairs?

Before she could decide, another man slipped in from the stairwell.

Moving silently, he held a flashlight but didn’t turn it on.

Ji He immediately curled into a smaller ball, hoping not to be noticed.

The flashlight scanned the area briefly before turning off. Only then did Ji He dare to peek out again.

She saw the man crouch low and stealthily enter the pharmacy, inching forward inside.

Ji He hesitated—should she stay or leave?

At that moment, several disheveled individuals bolted out through the shattered glass.

Their clothes were torn, and some had wounds on their bodies.

Like startled birds, they didn’t hesitate for even a second before fleeing down the stairs.

They were likely the pharmacy staff.

Ji He watched them disappear into the darkness, her gaze flickering.

Finally, she steeled herself, put on a mask, and slipped inside.

The scene inside was a mess.

Tables and chairs were overturned, shattered furniture littered the floor, and several employees lay motionless.

Their phones had been thrown to the ground, flashlight beams still shining weakly, casting eerie glows in the darkness.

Ji He used the faint light to observe.

The second man was sneaking forward while the first was furiously stuffing supplies into a bag, oblivious to the danger behind him.

Then—

A flash of lightning appeared in the second man’s hand, striking the first robber.

“AHHHHH!”

The man screamed in agony, dropping the stolen medicine. He grabbed his hammer and swung wildly behind him.

“AAAHHH!”

The second man cried out in pain as well.

Ji He watched, stunned.

What kind of grudge did they have?

That hammer was massive—aimed straight for the head. It was clearly meant to kill.

Yet the man who had been electrocuted was still standing.

Impressive!

Ji He stayed hidden, not blinking as she observed.

These two… were they game players?

They seemed pretty strong, with decent combat skills.

And what about her?

She was a player too!

Why was she being left out?

She wanted a powerful weapon as well!

Just as she was thinking this, a large, black iron shovel suddenly appeared in her hands.

It was huge—at least twice the size of an ordinary shovel.

Its edge was sharp, making it a perfect tool for work.

Ji He: “…”

Well.

That was… practical, at least.

While Ji He was distracted by her weapon, the fight in front of her had already reached its climax.

One man had gained the upper hand.

The other lay defeated on the ground, while the victor bent down to continue looting medicine.
