Chapter 17: First Meeting with the Qin Family
After returning home, Su Mei couldn’t help but feel anxious, while Meng Dad and Meng Yuanliang were silent the entire way.
Seeing the depressed expressions on her family members, Meng Yitong immediately lifted her spirits and reassured them: “Alright! Don’t worry! Don’t you trust me? I will definitely have a good life after I marry him!”
Meng Yitong was truly confident. Before she traveled back, she was just an orphan with no money or background. Yet, she still managed to enter a good university, pass the bar exam, and work at a decent law firm!
Although the salary of an intern lawyer was low, she still managed to save up enough for a down payment on a small apartment through various part-time jobs.
Meng Yitong believed that a good life was built by oneself, not something given by others.
Besides, the current situation is far better than her previous life.
Although she wasn’t superstitious about money being everything, having money certainly allowed one to do more enjoyable things.
She believed that this life would definitely be better than her previous one.
The next day, Meng Yitong began packing her things to take to the Qin family’s house, as that would be where she would live for the next five years. The contract from Old Master Qin clearly stated that she couldn’t request separation within the first five years.
It took her an entire day to pack everything.
Su Mei looked at the empty room of Meng Yitong and couldn’t help but feel a bit sad. She said, “Why are you still bringing all these old clothes? Are you not planning to come back home?”
Meng Yitong felt a bit guilty hearing her mother’s words. Sigh, she had always been frugal and really couldn’t bear to just throw away these perfectly good clothes.
What’s more, the most important thing is that right now, she was penniless and had a mountain of debt hanging over her head!
Even though Grandpa Meng had promised so much, those were all physical things, and she hadn’t seen a penny yet!
With no money in her pocket, she couldn’t imagine marrying and waiting for her husband to support her without taking anything along.
So even though she knew her mother might be upset, Meng Yitong still packed up the everyday necessities to take with her.
“No, I’m just a bit uneasy about suddenly moving to an unfamiliar place, so I wanted to prepare a bit more.”
As soon as she finished explaining, Meng Yitong could see her mother’s mood visibly darken.
It made sense, though. When a person gets married, they suddenly have to leave their home and live with someone else. Anyone would be nervous about that.
Not to mention that Yitong hadn’t even met the man she was going to spend her life with yet.
The tension she must feel right now must be heavier than anyone’s.
But up until now, Yitong hadn’t said anything about it, and had been comforting her and her father instead.
It seemed like she had really grown up.
However, Meng Mei didn’t want to see her daughter grow up like this so suddenly.
She still preferred when her daughter was happy and carefree every day.
Seeing the look on her mother’s face, Meng Yitong immediately realized she had said the wrong thing. She quickly tried to comfort her. “It’s just that I’ve gotten used to these things. After I get married, I might need to pretend a little for the first while.”
“At first, I can’t let them see how much I love to spend money all at once.”
“If I leave a bad impression, it would ruin everything…”
Before Meng Yitong could finish her sentence, her mother interrupted with a frown, “Why do you need to pretend?”
“You and Qin Zhuoran aren’t even marrying for love.”
“We’ve been through so much to get you married. We didn’t do it to continue suffering.”
“And the Qin family is so rich, they won’t care about these things.”
“If they’re really going to mind about your daily expenses, then it’s better to call it quits.”
“Just tough it out for five years, then get divorced and come back home.”
“I’ll have money for you, so you won’t even need to spend their money…”
Meng Yitong saw her mother getting more anxious and quickly shifted the topic.
Right now, the most anxious person in the family was obviously her mother. She didn’t want to make things worse by adding fuel to the fire.
After a lot of coaxing, Meng Yitong finally managed to calm her mother down. Once her mother left, Meng Yitong went to bed early to get some beauty sleep.
Even though she had never met Qin Zhuoran before and didn’t have a good impression of him at the moment, she still hoped she would feel better tomorrow and could make a good first impression. It would make things easier in the future.
Unfortunately, Meng Yitong’s hopes were dashed the very next evening.
When Meng Yitong got up the next morning, she went with her mother to a beauty salon for a full spa treatment.
This was the first time she had ever tried such beauty treatments.
Overall, it was a very comfortable experience. The life of the wealthy was indeed different.
To prepare for the evening’s gathering, she and her mother went shopping for clothes and got her hair done. This was also the first time Meng Yitong experienced the joy of dressing up.
For her, today was somewhat of a wedding day! The evening banquet was like her wedding! Even though there was no ceremony, she still couldn’t take it lightly.
Sadly, Meng Yitong’s happiness didn’t last long.
When she arrived at the hotel, all dressed up, and saw that only the serious-looking Chairman Qin and the arrogant-looking Mrs. Qin from the Qin family had arrived, her smile froze completely.
Right now, all Meng Yitong wanted to ask was, is it too late to call off the marriage?
“Hahaha, come! Chairman Qin, try this wine, it’s a 40-year-old vintage I’ve been saving.”
Grandpa Meng laughed, not showing the slightest sign of dissatisfaction.
“Uncle Meng, just call me Zhigang. We’re family now, no need to be so polite.” Chairman Qin also softened his expression.
“Hahaha, in that case, I’ll take advantage of you. Zhigang, try this dish, it’s the chef’s signature dish. You must try it…”
Meng Yitong’s second uncle and second aunt were also enthusiastically hosting Mrs. Qin.
The warm atmosphere at their table stood in stark contrast to the silence at Meng Yitong’s table.
Meng Yitong’s father and mother were glaring at the people across the table, their faces dark as night. If Meng Yitong hadn’t stopped her mother just now, she would have flipped the table in anger.
Of course, such a heavy table probably wouldn’t have been easy to flip, but if it weren’t for the interruption, those people on the opposite side would never have been able to eat so peacefully.
Meng Yitong looked at her second uncle, second aunt, and cousin Meng Yuanxi, all enthusiastically greeting Chairman Qin, and couldn’t help but find it funny.
She wondered, if it were Meng Wanbai who was getting married today, would they still be laughing so brightly?
After chatting for a while, they seemed to finally notice the four members of Meng Yitong’s family sitting at the table.
Chairman Qin focused on the only young woman present, Meng Yitong. Her second uncle immediately understood and introduced her, “Yiyi, come and meet Chairman Qin and Mrs. Qin. They’ll be your future father-in-law and mother-in-law, you can just call them mom and dad!”
Meng Yitong stared at her second uncle’s radiant smile and almost burst out laughing.
It was their first meeting, and the groom wasn’t even here yet, but they were already asking her to call them “mom” and “dad.”
Even though she wasn’t the original daughter, she had been calling him “Second Uncle” for so many years. And now, at a time like this, he was completely disregarding the original her’s feelings!
Meng Yitong thought that people like her second uncle should have been perfect as a sycophant.
Her parents, Meng Yitong’s father and mother, also had their faces darkened because of her second uncle’s words
