Chapter 28 Grandfather and Grandson Conversation
Ye Nanyi was a little confused by Auntie Wang’s words. She had been eating a lot lately, so why was she still so thin? Could it be that the original owner had been malnourished for so long? “Ye Zhiqing, what are you thinking about?” Auntie Wang asked, noticing Ye Nanyi’s absent-minded expression. Ye Nanyi quickly replied, “Nothing, Auntie. I was thinking about when it would be convenient to go to your house.” Auntie Wang slapped her thigh and said, “Oh, that’s all! Let’s go in a few days. We’ll have plenty of time after the grain distribution.
” Ye Nanyi had forgotten about the grain distribution. She had only seen it on TV and had never actually witnessed it. “Auntie, when does our village distribute grain?” Auntie Wang thought back to the usual time and said, “It’ll be in a few days. We need to prepare for winter here, and we’ll have pork and cabbage stew for the New Year.” Ye Nanyi wasn’t curious about the pork and cabbage stew, but she was curious about the pig slaughter. “Okay, Auntie. I’ll go in a few days.” Auntie Wang was amused. This educated youth spoke differently. “We’re at the village. Everyone get off,” Qi Daoye announced. Ye Nanyi heard Qi Daoye’s words and quickly took her basket and went back to the educated youth point. As soon as she arrived, she noticed Zeng Bailing sneaking around, not sure what she was doing. Ye Nanyi just glanced at her curiously and was about to go into the dormitory. But Zeng Bailing called out to Ye Nanyi in a low voice. “Ye Zhiqing, come here for a moment.”
Ye Nanyi almost thought she had misheard. Had Zeng Bailing gone crazy? “What’s wrong?” Zeng Bailing didn’t say anything, but pulled Ye Nanyi forward a step. Ye Nanyi saw that a girl, she didn’t know who, was holding a bowl of braised pork and giving it to Wang Xiangdong. However, Wang Xiangdong was refusing, but the girl kept stuffing it into his arms. “You just want me to see this? There’s nothing interesting to see,” Ye Nanyi said nonchalantly. Zeng Bailing looked like she had seen a ghost. She couldn’t believe it. “Ye Zhiqing, you’re really different! Do you know who this girl is?” Ye Nanyi didn’t know who the girl was and shook her head honestly.
“This girl is Qi Aimei, the daughter of our village’s accountant, Qi Shengli. It’s said that she fell in love with Wang Zhiqing at first sight, so…” Ye Nanyi carefully looked at Qi Aimei. She looked like the kind of girl that the older generation liked. Her skin was good, but she was a bit tanned from being in the countryside. She was much better than that Xu Yulan. At least she was sincere. Xu Yulan just relied on empty promises. She didn’t know how she had managed to convince Wang Xiangdong to come to the countryside. “Zeng Zhiqing, I’m going now.
You can watch for a while.” Before Zeng Bailing could say anything, Wang Xiangdong saw Ye Nanyi. “Ye Zhiqing, don’t leave. You know that I have someone I like. Tell Comrade Qi.” Ye Nanyi rolled her eyes and didn’t want to deal with Wang Xiangdong. She could tell that Qi Aimei was a sincere girl. “Wang Zhiqing, what do you want me to say? Should I say that you like my hypocritical stepsister, Xu Yulan, or that your reason for coming to the countryside is because of your bad intentions?” Wang Xiangdong was about to explode. He couldn’t even speak a complete sentence. “
You… don’t… be… rude…” Ye Nanyi didn’t tolerate him. She directly retorted, “You know in your heart whether I’m lying or not.” After saying that, Ye Nanyi felt relieved, but she had hurt Qi Aimei quite badly. Qi Aimei had originally thought that Wang Xiangdong was lying when he said he had someone he liked, but it turned out to be true. But then she looked at Ye Nanyi. She wasn’t stupid. She felt like there was something more to Ye Nanyi’s words. She thought that she would find a chance to talk to Ye Nanyi alone later. “Wang Zhiqing, take the braised pork. This is my own will. Don’t feel burdened.” Wang Xiangdong felt like he had been refusing for a long time, but it was all in vain. He turned to see Ye Nanyi’s playful expression and reached out to take the braised pork from Qi Aimei. Qi Aimei was overjoyed and skipped away. Wang Xiangdong looked at Qi Aimei’s happy back and regretted it. He was afraid that if he accepted it, he would be entangled with her later.
Zeng Bailing, who had been watching the show from the side, couldn’t understand what was going on. “Wang Zhiqing, weren’t you rejecting it just now? Why did you take it? Are you hungry?” After spending so many days together, Wang Xiangdong knew that Zeng Bailing didn’t think before she spoke, so he didn’t bother arguing with her. “Bang,” he slammed the door shut, clutching his stomach and leaning against the table. “Ye Nanyi, I won’t let you get away with this. You actually humiliated me with others.” Fortunately, Ye Nanyi didn’t know what was going on in Wang Xiangdong’s mind, otherwise she would have cried injustice. “Alright, how’s your leg?
Winter is coming soon, and we need to gather firewood. Don’t freeze to death.” Zeng Bailing looked at her leg and blushed, not sure what she was thinking. Ye Nanyi felt like Zeng Bailing had gone crazy from being in the countryside. “Why are you blushing? Did you hear what I said?” Zeng Bailing nodded vigorously. “I heard. Wang Fang will help me pick it up.” Ye Nanyi didn’t say anything more after that. She took her basket and quickly went back to the dormitory. Back in the dormitory, Ye Nanyi entered her space again.
Once she was in her space, she took out the hairpin she had exchanged from Kang’er. She admired it for a while and then found a wooden box she had bought from the future and put it inside. Then Ye Nanyi went to rest.
Kang’er was slowly dragging the 50 pounds of grain back home when he was caught by his grandfather. “Kang’er, what are you carrying? Cough, cough.” Kang’er tightened his grip on the bag and stammered, “Nothing.” The old man didn’t believe him. He went forward and saw that it was a rice bag. He understood. He knew what Kang’er had been doing. “Grandpa will carry it for you. You’re too small to carry it.” Kang’er thought he had misheard. He watched his grandfather carry the rice bag inside. “Grandpa, aren’t you angry?”
The old man shook his head. “No, it’s my fault. I can’t take good care of Kang’er.” Kang’er burst into tears and threw himself into his grandfather’s arms. “Grandpa, it’s me who has burdened you. If it weren’t for taking care of me, you wouldn’t be so tired.” The grandfather and grandson talked for a while, and Kang’er told his grandfather how he got the rice. The old man sighed. “Kang’er, next time that sister comes, ask her to come to our house.”
Kang’er quickly agreed. “Grandpa, sit down. I’ll go make some porridge. We haven’t eaten properly for days. You go and rest.” The old man didn’t object. He wasn’t in good health. If he insisted on working, and collapsed, what would Kang’er do? Kang’er opened the rice bag. He didn’t see anything else, but his eyes were fixed on the white rice mixed with the coarse grain. He couldn’t remember when he had last eaten such white rice.
