A Military Marriage: Five Years Apart—The Delicate Beauty Joins the Army with Her Child Chapter 38

Chapter 38: Li Xia Was Admired

Everyone had been listening attentively, but upon hearing that the speaker was not a physician, they immediately began to doubt Li Xia.

“She’s not a physician? Then why was she allowed to give this lecture?”

“Are there no physicians in the military camp? Why would they let some military spouse with no medical knowledge teach a class? Isn’t this dangerous?”

“I’m not listening anymore! If I had known, I wouldn’t have come. I have so many things to do at home—what a waste of time!”

“I thought she was a professional physician, but it turns out she’s just a military spouse from the countryside. Isn’t this deception?”

The once-focused audience now erupted into an uproar.

Lin Jinghe, who had come specifically to attend the lecture, overheard the conversation as she listened.

Furious, she pushed through the crowd, stepped forward, and said loudly, “What’s wrong with being a military spouse? Do you think there aren’t capable people among military families?

Teacher Li, who is giving this lecture, may not be a physician, but what she’s teaching is useful—I can vouch for that. Who was questioning her just now? Why don’t you have the courage to step forward now?”

Standing in the crowd, Su Wenyen had initially intended to stir up trouble and then quietly slip away amidst the commotion. However, she hadn’t expected someone to speak up for Li Xia.

Noticing the gazes turning toward her, Su Wenyen refused to back down and said defiantly, “And who are you? Just because you say it’s useful, does that make it true?”

Lin Jinghe responded, “A few days ago, my child choked at the marketplace. It was thanks to Li Xia that he survived. Do you think my words aren’t credible? There should be people here today who were at the market that day, right?”

As soon as Lin Jinghe finished speaking, several people stepped forward and confirmed, “I can vouch for her. We saw her save the child with our own eyes.”

“That’s right! Teacher Li may not be a physician, but the fact that she saved someone is undeniable—we can all vouch for it!”

“She’s teaching us out of goodwill. And who are you, trying to stir up trouble here? I think you’re the one with bad intentions!” Lin Jinghe said, glaring at Su Wenyen.

Su Wenyen’s face turned pale. “W-Who says I have bad intentions? I was just raising a reasonable concern. What if she teaches the wrong thing and ends up harming people? I was only thinking of everyone’s safety!”

“Who knows if you’re really thinking about our safety,” Lin Jinghe scoffed, rolling her eyes at Su Wenyen.

Just then, a military physician wearing a white coat, having heard the commotion, walked over and said,

“I’m the director of the army base’s medical clinic. I can confirm that the first aid techniques Comrade Li is teaching are entirely valid. While she may not be a physician, when it comes to emergency first aid, she is more knowledgeable than many of our clinic’s own doctors!”

With the clinic director himself speaking up, it was clear to everyone whose words were credible and whose weren’t.

Su Wenyen clenched her teeth, noticing more and more people whispering and casting judgmental glances at her. Feeling utterly embarrassed, she had no choice but to slink away in defeat.

As she left, an elderly woman spat on the ground in disgust and said,

“Ugh! Such a pretty young girl, yet so rotten at heart! People really can’t be compared. Some have kind hearts, saving lives at the marketplace and teaching us valuable knowledge, while others only know how to cause trouble! If no one had spoken up for Comrade Li just now, we would’ve been deceived by you and wrongly accused her!”

The old woman was an expert at spitting—her aim was impeccable. A precise glob of spit landed right on Su Wenyen’s brand-new skirt.

When Su Wenyen looked down and saw what had happened, her face instantly turned green.

Her new skirt! That wretched old woman!

At that moment, Li Xia had just about finished her lecture.

The audience erupted into enthusiastic applause, their claps echoing for a long time without stopping.

Standing on the stage, Li Xia seemed to glow under the chorus of praise, exuding an almost radiant brilliance. In stark contrast, Su Wenyen was slinking away in disgrace.

“Teacher Li’s lecture was truly excellent!”

“Teacher Li is amazing!”

A bright smile spread across Li Xia’s face. Being able to use the knowledge she had learned to help others filled her with genuine happiness.

As she stepped out of the conference room, the director of the military clinic called out to her. “Comrade Li, I’m the director of the military clinic. My surname is Fang. Please wait a moment—I’d like to discuss something with you.”

“Director Fang, what can I do for you?” Li Xia asked.

Director Fang said, “I just attended your lecture and found the techniques you taught to be extremely useful. I’d like to invite you to work at our clinic. Would you be interested?”

Work at the clinic?

Li Xia had actually been thinking about finding a job, but faced with Director Fang’s invitation, she chose to decline.

She replied, “Director Fang, the first-aid techniques I taught today are things I happened to come across in a book.

I’ve never formally studied medicine. Medicine is a rigorous field, and I can’t treat patients’ health as a joke. So I’m sorry, Director Fang, but I have to decline your offer.”

Director Fang looked at the young woman in front of him, a smile still on her face. When he heard her say, ‘Medicine is a rigorous field, and I can’t treat patients’ health as a joke,’ admiration shone openly in his eyes.

If it were anyone else, even without a medical background, they would surely seize this opportunity.

After all, working at the military clinic wasn’t something just anyone could do—let alone being personally invited by him.

Yet, she had turned it down with such sincerity, which was truly admirable.

“I see. That is a bit of a pity. Your lecture today was truly excellent!” Director Fang did not hold back his praise.

“Thank you. I hope that the comrades in the medical team can use this emergency first-aid knowledge to help more people!” Li Xia replied with a smile.

Director Fang nodded. “They certainly will.”

After bidding Director Fang farewell, Li Xia heard someone calling her name.

“Teacher Li! Teacher Li!”

She turned her head and saw a woman in a long dress. After a moment’s thought, she recognized her—it was the wife of Deputy Regimental Commander Yan, Lin Jinghe, the mother of the child who had choked at the market that day.

Lin Jinghe’s face was slightly flushed as she smiled at Li Xia, looking a little shy, yet her eyes sparkled with excitement.

“Teacher Li, do you remember me? We met at the market a couple of days ago—you saved my son, Chenchen!”

Li Xia noticed the way Lin Jinghe was looking at her—it reminded her of how a fangirl might gaze at her idol. She wasn’t sure if she was imagining it, but the resemblance was uncanny.

“Of course, I remember. And the meat left at my doorstep yesterday—that was from you, wasn’t it?” Li Xia said with a smile.

In truth, Lin Jinghe wasn’t the type of woman with a naturally sweet or endearing appearance. She had a rather cool and distant demeanor, lacking a strong sense of approachability.

But at this moment, with the bright smile on her face and her secretive little act of leaving the meat, Li Xia suddenly found her quite adorable.

Lin Jinghe’s face reddened again as she admitted, “I was afraid that if I told you, you wouldn’t accept it, so I had no choice but to do it that way. I really can’t thank you enough for what you did that day. I originally wanted to invite you over for a meal, but… my cooking skills are honestly nothing to show off, so I figured I’d spare you.”

She looked a little embarrassed.

“Teacher Li, your lecture just now was amazing—I listened very carefully,” Lin Jinghe said earnestly. She had even taken half a day off from work just to attend the session.

“Before meeting you, I never imagined you’d be this impressive. Not only are you beautiful, but you also know first aid, and you’re a great cook. I even told my husband, Old Yan, the other day—if I were a man, I’d want to marry you myself! Honestly, Gu Wei… uh, Commander Gu sure is lucky…” Lin Jinghe trailed off.

Li Xia noticed the odd expression on Lin Jinghe’s face when she mentioned Gu Weicheng. She wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but something about it felt off.

Then, Lin Jinghe suddenly looked serious and asked with concern, “Teacher Li, is Commander Gu treating you well? He… he hasn’t bullied you, has he? If he dares to mistreat you, don’t be afraid to speak up. You can go to the Women’s Federation, or just come to me—I’ll stand by your side!”

Li Xia was momentarily stunned. So, Lin Jinghe really didn’t like Gu Weicheng—her instincts hadn’t been wrong.

She shook her head and replied, “Weicheng treats me very well. He hasn’t bullied me at all. Do you… have some sort of misunderstanding about him?”
