A Summer Night’s Affair
A Summer Night’s Affair Chapter 11

Chapter 11: He Really Is a Male Siren

After paying, Xu En’tang received the bread and milk.

Xu En’tang’s gaze lingered on her hands before she looked up, meeting Tan Jili’s eyes.  For a moment, she didn’t know what to say.

Her ears were still faintly flushed.

Just as awkward as she had been facing Tan Jili in her past life.

A few other people were in the convenience store, looking in their direction.

Tan Jili’s eyelids lifted slightly. “You’re going to be late for class.”

Only then did Xu En’tang remember her classes.  The International Class schedule was different from theirs.

“Then I’ll go first.”

With that, she quickly left.

After Xu En’tang left, Tan Jili glanced at Yu Chen and Jiang Ran, whose expressions were less than friendly, before picking up his drink and leaving the convenience store.

Yu Chen followed, his tone teasing. “Brother, how come you have a sister I don’t know about?”

Tan Jili stopped, scrutinizing him with a strange look.

Yu Chen felt uncomfortable under his gaze, sensing mischief brewing.

“What?”

“Are you really…?” Tan Jili trailed off.

Yu Chen: “Really what?”

Tan Jili didn’t speak, slowly extending his index finger.

Then, he bent his finger.

“Bent.”

Yu Chen: …

Tan Jili retracted his hand and continued walking.

Yu Chen jumped. “Get lost, Tan Er! You’re spreading rumors!! I’m totally straight!”

Jiang Ran: “If I were you, I wouldn’t have answered him.”

Yu Chen: …

He just couldn’t help his mouth.

He knew Tan Er always found new ways to be infuriating.

So annoying.

Yu Chen returned to the previous topic, questioning Tan Jili: “How come we didn’t know you had a sister like that? She came right up and called you ‘Second Brother’ so affectionately.  She’s interested in you, isn’t she?”

Yu Chen: “When did you seduce another pretty sister?”

Jiang Ran added: “She’s your type.”

Jiang Ran’s reminder made Yu Chen remember.

That’s right!

Didn’t Tan Er like those pretty, innocent girls, the kind that were obedient but also had a bit of a feisty streak?

That girl earlier was indeed sweet and innocent, her eyes bright and expressive, but you could tell she had a bit of a temper.

Tan Jili twisted the bottle cap, feigning disinterest.  “What type? I don’t know I have a type.”

Yu Chen: “Cut it out! I remember a female lead from a TV show you watched every day when we were kids, she was exactly that type.”

Tan Jili took two sips of his drink, his Adam’s apple bobbing with each swallow.

Yu Chen clicked his tongue.

He really is a male siren.

Who is he trying to seduce?

No wonder every time he played basketball and took a sip of water, the girls would scream.

Tan Jili finished his drink and screwed on the cap. “Then you couldn’t take your eyes off Ultraman when we were kids, did you also like that type?”

Yu Chen: …

Can you compare Ultraman to that?!

Jiang Ran: “Still not right, you even paid for her stuff.”

“Yeah, you’re usually so aloof, why did you pay for her things today?”

Yu Chen had a “you definitely have a problem” expression.

Tan Jili found him annoying. “She’s the one my grandfather and the Lu family brought from Licheng.  Grandpa specifically told me to take good care of her.”

Yu Chen was surprised. “It’s her? No wonder!”

Yu Chen: “I remember, doesn’t she have a childhood betrothal with you and Lu Jin?”

Tan Jili…

He laughed, “What era is it?  Childhood betrothals are a thing of the past.”

Yu Chen: “But it happened.  My grandfather told me about it.”

Tan Jili: “A childhood betrothal between three people?  Does that even make sense?”

Yu Chen: “Back then, you guys weren’t even born yet. Who knew if you’d be boys or girls?  It was meant to hopefully create a pair.”

Tan Jili shrugged unconcernedly. “You know it was just a casual remark.”

Yu Chen: “Right, what’s your sister’s name? I thought her name sounded familiar earlier. Xu… Xu what was it?”

Tan Jili: “Xu En’tang.”

Yu Chen paused, suddenly remembering why it sounded familiar.

“It’s her! That’s why it sounded familiar!”

Jiang Ran: “You know her?”

Yu Chen: “She’s the one who was doing homework in the private room the night of my birthday. You came later, so you probably didn’t hear.”

That night, they overheard girls talking outside the private room. When they went in, everyone surrounded him, wishing him a happy birthday.

He quickly forgot the gossip and didn’t see what she looked like.

He hadn’t expected her to be so pretty.

Jiang Ran: “She was there too?”

Yu Chen: “She came with Lu Jin.”

Yu Chen suddenly remembered something.

“So she likes Lu Jin, Tan Er.”

Tan Jili’s voice was languid. “Isn’t that perfect?  Maybe the childhood betrothal will actually happen.”

Lin Jiayu’s spirits recovered by the afternoon after school; she even stayed behind to discuss a problem with Xu En’tang.

When they left the classroom, everyone else had already gone.

Lin Jiayu scrolled through her phone as she walked, so engrossed that she didn’t pay attention to the steps and almost tripped.

Luckily, Xu En’tang caught her in time.

“Careful.”

Lin Jiayu patted her chest. “You scared me.”

“I was looking at gossip about Tan Jili.”

Mentioning Tan Jili, Xu En’tang couldn’t help but remember the awkwardness in the convenience store.

He probably thought she was strange.

“What gossip?”

Lin Jiayu: “They say Tan Jili treated a girl to snacks at the convenience store this afternoon.”

Xu En’tang: …

It couldn’t be her, right?

“…Where did you see this?”

“This group chat.” Lin Jiayu turned her phone screen towards her. “It’s made by the International Class students.”

Xu En’tang saw several messages on the screen at a glance.

[You can’t even tell from the photo that he treated her to snacks.]

[Exactly, how is that possible?]

[And she’s not even from the International Class.]

[Her back looks just so-so.]

Someone actually took a picture.

Xu En’tang: “You… didn’t you say you only admire him for his good grades? Why are you in a group chat like this?”

Lin Jiayu: “To find out more about the great god, of course.  There are several others lurking in the group chat with the same goal.”

“The picture I prayed to before my final exam last semester was saved from this group chat.”

Xu En’tang: …

This group chat didn’t only talk about Tan Jili; they talked about other things, but Lin Jiayu didn’t pay much attention to those.

Because of the convenience store incident, there were many messages in the group chat in the afternoon.

After understanding the whole thing, Lin Jiayu lost interest in the messages and casually scrolled up, landing on that photo.

The photo was a candid shot and a little blurry.

Tan Jili stood at the convenience store counter, partially obscuring the girl beside him; only half of her back was visible.

It was Monday, and everyone was in uniform.

You couldn’t tell anything from the clothes.

But that back, that hairstyle…

Lin Jiayu looked up at Xu En’tang, then down at the photo.

Then, she looked up again. “Xu En’tang, turn around for a second.”

Xu En’tang: “Actually, the red bean bread and milk you ate this afternoon were bought by him.”

Lin Jiayu: !!!
