In just two months, the refugee camp in City A had accepted over 70,000 refugees, far exceeding the capacity it could accommodate.
The camp was overcrowded, and even so, new refugees kept arriving every day.
Each of the simple, makeshift barracks, designed to fit around 100 people, was now crammed with more than a thousand. There was just enough space left for staff to distribute daily food supplies.
At first, when the population was small, providing three meals a day for everyone was not a problem. But as the number of refugees grew, the quantity and quality of the food continued to decline. Now, each person only received a package of bread or compressed biscuits, along with a bottle of mineral water.
Over a thousand people were crammed into one room, a mix of all kinds of people.
The official food supplies could only ensure that they wouldn’t starve to death. Full stomachs were out of the question.
To get more food, some people’s minds began to work overtime. They would sneakily take food from others who had saved it while they were sleeping or steal food from the weaker ones when the officials weren’t looking.
When things escalated and were brought to the attention of the camp staff, both sides held firm to their claims, and since no concrete evidence could be presented, the matter was left unresolved.
The camp staff was limited, and there were many people to manage. Conflicts were constantly happening. Some things were obvious to the staff, but they could only turn a blind eye; otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to do any work in a day with all the trivial matters constantly needing their attention.
In one corner of a room in the camp:
“Hánxù ge, let’s leave the camp and go back to the community. I can’t stand this life for another day!” Wang Yuyun complained, hugging Du Hánxù’s arm.
“We can’t go back! If we go back, we’ll definitely be dead! Don’t you remember that crazy woman, Ye Yu’an, is still in the community?! She already knows it was us who incited those people to trouble her. So many men couldn’t do anything to her; what do you think will happen if we go back? It’ll be like walking into a trap!”
Du Hánxù’s face turned pale, and his eyes widened in anger as he hissed low.
Hearing Du Hánxù’s words, Wang Yuyun recalled what she had seen that day. Her lips trembled, and she lowered her head.
Before, they had persuaded the leader of a building in the community to deal with that little bitch, Ye Yu’an, hoping to watch her suffer. They had found a hidden corner to observe while they set up an ambush.
Who would have thought that Ye Yu’an was completely different from the fragile, defenseless person they had imagined. She appeared cold, agile, and with every knife swing, someone fell. The warm blood splattered across her face, and her expression didn’t change at all.
Witnessing Ye Yu’an kill someone firsthand, Du Hánxù and Wang Yuyun were frozen in place. Despite the freezing temperature of minus 40 degrees, they were covered in cold sweat.
Fearful that Ye Yu’an would come after them, they didn’t dare to return to gather their belongings. They immediately left the community and fled to the refugee camp.
Wang Yuyun’s words had triggered Du Hánxù’s sensitive and fragile nerves.
Du Hánxù had always been raised in an affluent environment. He had never suffered like this—no food, living in a room filled with all kinds of mixed smells, and sleeping on a crowded bunk bed with over a thousand people.
During the day, he heard the constant noise of arguments and babies crying. At night, there were the sounds of snoring, teeth grinding, and people talking in their sleep.
For two months, there was not a moment of peace. Everything constantly rubbed Du Hánxù the wrong way, and Wang Yuyun’s words were like the final straw, unleashing the emotions he had been suppressing.
“I’m sorry, Hánxù ge. I shouldn’t have said that,” Wang Yuyun said, lowering her head, pretending to be pitiful.
She hid the flicker of resentment in her eyes. If it weren’t for the hope that Du’s family would come to look for him and take her along, why would she have endured so much and continued following him?
“You just have to hang in there a little longer. I’ve already asked the soldiers from the camp to go rescue people. If they can get in touch with my family, we’ll be able to leave here and live a good life,” Du Hánxù said, his mood grim. He wasn’t sure if he was comforting Wang Yuyun or himself.
“Mm, I’ll always stay with you, Hánxù ge,” Wang Yuyun said, seemingly unaware of his impatience. She nestled into Du Hánxù’s arms, looking completely dependent on him, which gave him some comfort amidst his frustration.
In such a time, it felt reassuring that a woman was willing to stay loyal and follow him, which validated his sense of self-worth.
People who had returned from the refugee camp were back in the community. Shuxin had secretly observed them through binoculars. From their pale, exhausted faces, it was clear that life in the camp had not been easy.
Shuxin could imagine the conditions in the camp. The original book had a small section describing official refugee camps, but it was only set in the later stages of the apocalypse.
Thanks to Yan Mo’s warning, the officials had been prepared, and the establishment of the camp came much earlier than expected.
With the earlier setup, more survivors arrived, seeking refuge. As the number of people increased, resources became limited. To feed more people with limited resources, the conditions had to be reduced.
The military, aside from rescuing survivors outside, must also be tirelessly searching for supplies.
“Xīn bǎo, are you ready?” Yan Mo called.
“Almost there, I’ll be right out!” Shuxin quickly grabbed her hat and headed out to join Yan Mo and the others.
The weapons the intruders had brought into the community had given them a new idea.
The guns they carried couldn’t have been obtained overseas like theirs. The only possible source was the various police stations in City A.
Each police station had an armory, equipped with a number of guns corresponding to the number of officers. The guns they had matched exactly the amount an armory would supply.
Since the police stations were spread out across the city, their arms and ammunition were limited. It would take time to gather them, but their primary targets were the large armories in City A.
Before the apocalypse, City A had been of great importance, and the weapons in the armories would definitely be the latest and most comprehensive.
Due to family connections, Yan Mo was familiar with the locations of armories in City A. Today, their destination was the largest armory in the city, the one closest to their community.
At that moment, a special forces team, driving from another direction, entered City A. Their target was also the city’s largest armory.
