The sudden flooding and sharp drop in temperature caused the once bustling super-first-tier city to lose its vitality. Looking around, the entire world seemed to be frozen by ice and snow, cold and lifeless without a trace of human warmth.
The sky was as dark as if it were about to collapse, weighing heavily on people’s hearts and making them feel particularly irritable.
The ground was covered with a layer of ice. Even with the use of anti-skid chains, the car couldn’t go any faster. The driver had to stay extremely alert, as even the slightest mistake could cause the vehicle to skid on the ice.
“This road is really difficult to drive on. I wonder when this kind of day will end?” Blue Jingming sighed from the front passenger seat.
“Yeah, how could we suffer such a big disaster? Three months of heavy rain, and now we have extreme cold weather. When will things get back to normal? Natural disasters have been going on for almost half a year, and it feels like it’s been a long time. I really miss the old days! I really hope this disaster ends soon!” Ke Feiguang, sitting in the back, echoed.
The others didn’t speak but nodded slightly, clearly agreeing with what the two said.
Suddenly, the man sitting in the middle of the backseat spoke up, “What if the natural disaster never ends?”
The four others were stunned. Apart from Zhang Qiu, who was driving and couldn’t turn his head, the rest of them looked at Xiao Lou, who was sitting in the middle, eyes closed as if resting.
Sensing their gazes, the man slowly opened his eyes, seemingly squinting due to the reflection from the ice. His dark eyes were as deep as an ancient well, without a ripple, but occasionally, a sharp light flashed through, giving off a chilling aura.
Ke Feiguang couldn’t hold back and asked first, “Captain, what did you mean by that? Do you have some internal information?”
“Mm.” Xiao Lou rubbed his aching forehead and shared the information he had just received from his family.
“I received information from above. There’s a rumor that we’re about to enter the era of the apocalypse. The natural disasters are the prelude and the beginning of it.”
“The core group is arguing about it, divided into two factions. One faction believes we shouldn’t give up on the civilians and should rescue as many as possible; the other believes we should gather resources and conserve strength to prepare for what’s to come.” Xiao Lou sat up straight, his expression solemn.
The four people fell silent after hearing Xiao Lou’s words. The inside of the car became quiet, and the atmosphere grew heavy.
They knew that they had stood out from thousands of excellent soldiers to become members of the special forces, not only because of their skills but also because they were the smartest. They observed things more carefully than others and thought deeper.
They had noticed the abnormality of the natural disasters this year, but they still held onto a glimmer of hope, or perhaps they simply didn’t want to believe the world had truly changed.
Xiao Lou’s words shattered their last bit of fantasy, but it wasn’t something they couldn’t accept. After all, they had already prepared themselves mentally. It was just hard to change their mindset.
The silence was suddenly broken by an unexpected sound.
“Boom boom boom—” The sound of something heavy striking the car continued as a group of people appeared ahead.
While Xiao Lou and his team were temporarily delayed, Yan Mo and his group had already safely arrived at the location of the weapons depot.
“Tsk tsk, this place is well built. The outer walls are so high, with barbed wire and electric nets on top. If there were electricity now and someone guarding it, who would even dare to make trouble? They’d be seeking death!” Bu Xiangwen looked at the weapon depot, which looked as sturdy as a steel barrel, and couldn’t help but sigh.
“The problem is, how do we get in?” Shu Xin, who was walking beside Yan Mo, asked.
Yan Mo stretched out his hand to feel the wall, looking around for a suitable spot. He then took out explosives from his bag. “We’ll blow it open.”
“…What a simple and violent method,” Shu Xin said, momentarily stunned. She hadn’t expected her usually clever boyfriend to use such a straightforward and brute force approach.
“Mm. The higher-ups in A City have temporarily forgotten about the weapons depot. After all, they’re not idiots. Someone will soon realize the importance of this place. While they haven’t reacted yet, we should grab it first,” Yan Mo explained.
Shu Xin wasn’t stupid. After a brief moment, she quickly understood the reasoning.
The weapons depot was located far from the city center, with no one living within a ten-kilometer radius. The amount of explosives used was calculated just enough to blow open the wall without causing a major vibration.
Inside the depot, the weapons were still intact, with no signs of being affected by the floods. However, the door inside couldn’t be dealt with as roughly as the outer wall. The weapons stored inside were military-grade, so they had to be careful with fire, let alone explosives.
Yan Mo gave Shu Xin a look, and she understood immediately. From her space, she took out the items that Yan Mo had prepared the night before.
Bending down to pick up the items from the ground, Yan Mo and Mu Qimai each worked on one side of the reinforced door. Soon, a hole large enough for one person to pass through appeared on the door, which was as sturdy as a bank vault door.
Shu Xin and Bu Xiangwen, watching from behind, were left wide-eyed, never having seen such an operation before.
“What are you standing there for? Come in,” Mu Qimai called to the others, following Yan Mo into the weapons depot.
“Wow~”
“Wow~”
Shu Xin and Bu Xiangwen hurried to follow. Once inside, they were immediately overwhelmed by the sight of the neatly arranged weapons.
It was no surprise that this was A City’s largest weapons depot. The space inside was roughly the size of five or six basketball courts, with a height of about five meters. The place was stacked with boxes of guns, bullets, and explosives, even including some newly developed weapons.
The group briefly counted the number of weapons, mentally noting the haul. Yan Mo then led Shu Xin around the depot, collecting items into her space.
In less than fifteen minutes, all the weapons had been stored in her space. The four of them were just about to leave when they suddenly heard the sound of a vehicle approaching.
They exchanged glances and quickly hid to the side.
The area was surrounded by dense vegetation, and with the temperature dropping sharply, it had been sealed off by a layer of ice, creating a natural ice barrier. Shu Xin and the others hid well behind the cover.
The vehicle’s occupants clearly had the same goal of reaching the weapons depot. If they left directly, they would inevitably run into the newcomers. With the depot seemingly empty, their presence would make them suspicious.
The military jeep slowly stopped, and five men got out. Upon seeing the outer wall blown open, their expressions changed.
“Captain, the wall has been blown open. Looks like someone was faster than us. They got here first,” Li Hongsheng said, frowning.
Xiao Lou didn’t speak. He walked over to the broken wall, carefully observed for a moment, and concluded, “This was done today…”
