“The wall was blown open today. The marks are fresh. The people might have just left not long ago.” He calmly analyzed while staring at the fragments from the explosion in his hand.
Blue Jingming ran out from inside to report, “Captain, everything in the weapons depot has been cleared out. What should we do now?”
“The other party obviously came prepared. Their target should not just be this one weapons depot. Let’s move on to the next one.” Xiao Lou made a quick decision.
The five of them got back in the car and left.
Once the car was out of sight, Shuxin and the others came out, but they didn’t go back the same way. They feared the group might be waiting for them halfway, so they took a longer detour to return.
While detouring, they spotted the newly built wildlife protection park on the outskirts of A City. Shuxin suddenly recalled that the original book mentioned how, during the apocalypse, not only human genes began mutating, but animals and plants did too. In fact, some animals and plants even started awakening much earlier than humans.
The mutation of animals and plants was different from that of humans — there was no distinction between good or bad.
Mutated animals became extraordinarily intelligent, their size grew two to three times larger, and their attacking power increased exponentially. Some even developed abilities similar to humans.
Some pets people raised before the apocalypse survived the natural disasters, and after mutation, these animals became incredibly loyal to their owners.
For those who hadn’t awakened abilities, having a mutated animal by their side for protection could be considered a form of security in the dangerous post-apocalyptic world.
Shuxin had once read in the book how someone’s cat, after mutating, carried its owner on its back to escape from zombie chases. She was so envious at the time and imagined riding a big cat like that.
As they walked, Yan Mo and the others noticed Shuxin had stopped, staring blankly at the wildlife protection park ahead. She seemed lost in thought.
“Xinbao, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?” Yan Mo returned to her side, looking down and asking patiently.
“Let’s go inside and take a look! What do you think?” Shuxin raised her head, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Sure, but you have to tell me, why do you suddenly want to go inside?” Yan Mo couldn’t refuse Shuxin’s request, especially when she looked at him with such bright eyes, but he still had to ask for the reason.
He knew his wife well — she was usually headstrong with small things, spoiled and loved to act cute, but when they were out, she always followed the plan and was obedient.
So now, her sudden desire to go into the wildlife park definitely had a reason.
“I just want to see if there are any living animals inside. I’ll explain the reason when we get back.”
“Alright, I really can’t do anything with you,” Yan Mo sighed but agreed. He told Bo Xiangwen and Mu Qimai, who had no objections, and after discussing, the four of them entered the long-neglected wildlife protection park. This project had been heavily promoted by the higher-ups, hoping it would become a famous tourist spot in A City and bring in some revenue.
Not only had they brought in various species of protected wild animals from all over the country, but they also spent large sums to create environments suited to each animal’s habits. From the partially exposed buildings and overall layout, you could see the effort put into the original construction.
The park was quite large. Shuxin and the others walked around the main path, but since Yan Mo was her husband, it was fine, but Bo Xiangwen and Mu Qimai were with them, so she didn’t want to waste their time.
After walking a large circle without finding anything, Shuxin gave up and sulked, walking ahead with her head lowered, looking like a drooping eggplant.
“Xinbao, I think I hear something over there.”
Yan Mo couldn’t stand seeing his wife upset. He had been paying close attention during their walk, and suddenly he heard a faint noise from the right.
“Where?!” Hearing the noise, Shuxin became alert immediately.
“It sounds like it’s coming from the right.”
Ignoring the others, Shuxin hurried toward the right, which was blocked by some obstacles, and Yan Mo followed closely behind.
Bo Xiangwen and Mu Qimai looked confused, not sure what was going on, but they followed as well.
“Wow, there really are still living animals… it’s a white tiger…”
“White tiger?” The three words made Yan Mo’s heart skip a beat. He immediately grabbed Shuxin’s arm, stopping her from moving forward.
“Wow, it really is a white tiger. It’s impressive it survived this long.” Bo Xiangwen, who had caught up, peered over to look.
Mu Qimai, the most observant of them all, was the first to notice something unusual with the tiger curled up in the pit. “But isn’t the tiger’s breathing off?”
“Yeah, and the depth of the pit feels off.” Yan Mo shifted his gaze from the anxious Shuxin and quickly assessed the situation. After scanning again, he came to a conclusion. “This white tiger is already dead. The thing still alive is under it.”
Yan Mo gave Mu Qimai a look, and after years of tacit understanding, Mu Qimai carefully walked over, lifting the dead white tiger’s body to reveal what was hidden underneath.
“Hiss—” Mu Qimai inhaled sharply upon seeing what was inside.
“What? What? Why are you two only talking halfway? You’re killing me with suspense! Let me see!” Shuxin broke free from Yan Mo’s grip and rushed over. When she saw there was no danger, Yan Mo let her go, and she quickly checked.
“There are five cubs? And there’s also a wolf underneath!” Shuxin gasped in surprise.
“Yeah, it looks like two mothers protected their children by lying on top of them for warmth.”
“Animals’ feelings for their young are no less than humans. Some humans aren’t even as good as animals.”
“Yan Daddy~” Shuxin had come here specifically to find animals to raise, and now that she had found five cubs, she wouldn’t miss this opportunity. She clung to Yan Mo’s waist, acting all sweet.
“Want to raise them?” Yan Mo’s eyes twitched at the nickname. After all this time, he still hadn’t gotten used to it.
“Yeah, let’s take them home and raise them! I promise, it’ll only be good for us, not bad at all.”
Shuxin looked at him with pleading eyes, as if she would start crying if he didn’t agree.
“Alright, but you better let go of me so I can put them into the space. Otherwise, they’ll freeze to death.”
“Okay!” After hearing Yan Mo’s approval, Shuxin’s eyes lit up, and she cooperated with him to store the five cubs in the second layer of space.
