Chapter 48 : Found something good

Pheasant?!

There are pheasants here?!

If we could catch one and bring it back, even if Xiao Cui and Xiaojun didn’t eat it, we could still trade it for some money!

Xiao Cui had obviously seen it too.

“There are a lot of pheasants in the back mountain. Uncle Li caught one a few days ago. But pheasants run too fast and can even fly. My brother and I have encountered them several times, but we just couldn’t catch them!”

Song Shiwei, however, was already running through different ways to catch a pheasant in her mind.

At this moment, she hated herself for not having some kind of golden finger ability.

If only she had traveled through time with a full arsenal!

She could just pick up any weapon, shoot a few times, and the pheasant would be down!

She sighed and shook off the thought, pure wishful thinking.

She did, however, occasionally go to shooting ranges for target practice or play darts for fun, and her aim was actually quite good.

If only she had a slingshot right now, she could give it a try.

As if something clicked in her mind, she glanced at the nearby branches, found one that was thick and shaped like a slingshot, and pulled the hairband off her head.

Wrapping it around the branch, she fashioned a makeshift slingshot that looked pretty convincing.

Xiao Cui watched in confusion. “Sister Weiwei, what are you doing?”

Song Shiwei scanned the ground, picked up a small stone with a sharp edge, and tested its weight in her hand.

“I want to try shooting that pheasant.”

Xiao Cui looked at the crude slingshot and naturally didn’t have much hope. But since Sister Weiwei wanted to try, she might as well let her!

To be honest, even Song Shiwei herself didn’t think she could actually hit the pheasant like this.

But after seeing it, she couldn’t just do nothing her hands itched for action.

She placed the stone on the hairband, pinched it tightly, and pulled it back hard.

The pheasant was perched on a tree not far away, not too high, not too far.

Song Shiwei narrowed one eye and focused, gradually aiming at the pheasant’s head.

She didn’t have a powerful weapon, so her only chance was a precise shot to the head. If she was lucky and hit it just right, she might be able to knock it out.

Her posture looked surprisingly professional, and even Xiao Cui subconsciously held her breath, her eyes locked on the pheasant.

Song Shiwei steadied her aim. The pheasant on the branch seemed to sense something, it kept twisting its head left and right, its round eyes scanning its surroundings as if searching for danger.

Then, in a split second, Song Shiwei released her grip.

The stone shot out from the hairband like lightning.

“Snap!”

The pheasant, with its sharp instincts, flapped its wings and kicked off the branch to take flight. But just as it leaped, the sharp stone struck its left thigh hard.

The impact was precise, and blood immediately oozed from the wound.

The pheasant let out a sharp cry and tumbled down from the tree, struggling to escape.

Xiao Cui and Song Shiwei, reacting instantly, were so shocked that they immediately gave chase.

Even though the pheasant’s leg was injured, it still had wings! By flapping them, it could launch itself about half a person’s height off the ground.

But perhaps due to the pain, it kept falling back down after flying a few times.

Agile and quick, Xiao Cui lunged forward and caught it under her body!

Xiao Cui shouted excitedly, “Sister Weiwei, I caught it! I caught a pheasant!”

Song Shiwei, who was following closely behind, also saw the pheasant that Xiao Cui was holding firmly.

Her eyes narrowed with laughter.

She never thought that her shooting skills from her previous life would actually allow her to hit a pheasant!

Xiao Cui grabbed the pheasant’s wings and lifted it up.

“Let’s see how you can run away now!”

As she spoke, she took out a piece of hemp rope from the backpack behind her and tied up the pheasant’s feet and wings.

“Sister Weiwei, you’re amazing! You can even hit a pheasant with a stone!”

Song Shiwei smiled guiltily.

“What a coincidence! I just liked playing with slingshots when I was a kid, so my aim is a bit better!”

But Xiao Cui still admired her immensely.

The way she looked at Song Shiwei became even more intense, as if, in this moment, there was no one more powerful than her in the world.

Even the uncle who had previously shot a pheasant was instantly overshadowed.

This time, when Song Shiwei entered the mountains, aside from following Xiao Cui to gather wild vegetables, she also wanted to see if there was anything valuable in the mountains that she could ask Xiao Cui to trade.

After looking around, she actually found a great place.

As the saying goes, “Those who live by the mountains benefit from the mountains.” There were many treasures hidden here, it just depended on whether one could recognize them.

If she hadn’t been a food host in her previous life, she wouldn’t have known so much.

The theme of one of her past shows was “Searching for Delicacies in the Mountains.” She had followed a botany professor and several experienced local villagers, discovering many edible treasures hidden in the wilderness.

For example, the large patch of Polygonum multiflorum right in front of her, what a find!

Song Shiwei felt a pang of jealousy. If they hadn’t been chasing the pheasant, they wouldn’t have stumbled upon this place.

Polygonum multiflorum was a valuable medicinal herb, both in this era and in modern times. It was a tonic in traditional Chinese medicine, known to prolong life, nourish the liver and kidneys, and have a calming effect. It was used to treat symptoms such as liver and kidney deficiency, lower back pain, insomnia, and premature graying of hair.

Even its leaves had significant medicinal value. They had detoxifying properties, could help reduce swelling, kill parasites, and relieve itching. They were used to treat sores, scabies, and scrofula, often applied raw, boiled in water for washing, or smeared directly on the skin.

Seeing the excitement on Song Shiwei’s face, Xiao Cui was confused.

“Sister Weiwei? What’s wrong? Why aren’t we leaving?”

Song Shiwei pointed at the green leaves and said, “We’re not leaving. We’re digging these up!”

Xiao Cui looked at the plants, clearly not recognizing them.

“Why are we digging these? Are they wild vegetables too?”

Song Shiwei smiled. “These aren’t wild vegetables, they’re money!”

“Money??”

Xiao Cui’s eyes widened.

“Sister Weiwei, are you joking? How can this be money?”

Song Shiwei squatted down and explained, “This is an excellent Chinese medicinal herb. It can be sold for money! If I’m not mistaken, after drying, one pound of it can sell for about ten yuan!”

“What?!”

Xiao Cui was so shocked that her mouth nearly fell open, and she stuttered.

“Sister Wei-Weiwei… , y-you’re not lying to me, are you? Is this stuff really that valuable?”

Song Shiwei smiled and nodded. “Of course, I’m not lying. After we dig it up and dry it, you can take it to Doctor Sun, the one who’s been treating your grandma! He’ll definitely recognize it.”

After thinking for a moment, she added cautiously, “Though, the price might not be exactly ten yuan per pound, it should at least be worth seven or eight yuan!”
