After the porridge distribution ended, Jin Qianqian took her younger brother and left.
Once the Jin family’s convoy had departed, the area outside the city returned to silence.
The people remaining outside the city were either newly arrived refugees or those who had been assigned to villages but had not yet settled.
Although the government allocated villages to them, once they arrived, they would be unfamiliar with the place, lacking food, and facing hardships.
Because of this, many chose to stay outside the city, where at least occasional charity could prevent them from starving.
As the sun set and the sky darkened, Shen Qingwan stayed in the mule cart with three children, eating a little before letting her parents and younger sister board the cart for their meal.
With so many people outside, it was better to eat in the cart.
Once her parents finished eating, her second brother and his wife also got on the cart to eat.
They were eating white flour steamed buns—something too precious to be consumed in front of outsiders.
Shen Qingwan had no idea when she had bought them, but good food like this should not be shown off.
“Qingwan?”
Just as Shen Qingwan finished feeding Da Huang and was about to find a place to rest, she suddenly heard a familiar voice.
That voice filled her with an inexplicable sense of disgust.
Turning around, she saw Jiang Shi running towards her, followed by her biological father, Shen Wenhai, and her younger siblings, Shen Qingju and Shen Dachun.
“It really is you! You wretched girl, we finally found you!”
Jiang Shi was both shocked and overjoyed upon seeing Shen Qingwan.
Their journey had been incredibly difficult, and it was a miracle they had survived.
Now she was both hungry and exhausted, and to her surprise, she spotted her eldest daughter as soon as they arrived in Suzhou.
Even better, Qingwan had a mule cart—meaning she must have food.
Shen Qingwan looked at Jiang Shi, who was in a disheveled state, along with Shen Wenhai and the others, their faces covered in dirt.
Her expression remained cold.
Old Man Lu and Old Lady Lu were also taken aback to see Shen Qingwan’s family.
They had never liked them.
After all, Shen Qingwan had been sold to their family, and selling a daughter was very different from marrying one off.
To put it nicely, they were in-laws, but to put it bluntly, they were nothing more than sellers.
“Qingwan, hurry and give your mother some food! I’m starving!” Jiang Shi said, reaching out to grab Shen Qingwan’s arm, but Qingwan swiftly dodged.
“From the moment you sold me to the Lu family, I was no longer your daughter. Why should I give you food? My husband’s compensation money is still with you. Are you planning to return it to me?”
Shen Qingwan looked at her coldly. Jiang Shi, driven by hunger, ignored everything else and lunged for Qingwan again.
“I’m your mother! You can’t just abandon me! The bandits took all our money and food. We’ve survived by eating grass and tree bark along the way. Your grandfather and grandmother starved to death on the road! I’m truly starving—please give me something to eat!”
Shen Qingwan shoved her aside. “Your life or death has nothing to do with me. I can barely take care of myself, let alone feed you.”
“Shen Qingwan! I’m starving! Give me food!”
Shen Dachun rushed forward, not even bothering to call her ‘sister,’ demanding food outright. Shen Qingwan didn’t spare him a single glance.
“Qingwan, Father finally found you! My good daughter, give your father something to eat!” Shen Wenhai looked at her weakly, as if she were his last hope.
The only one who remained silent was Shen Qingju, who usually behaved aggressively. Now, she just followed behind, her expression dazed and face covered in bruises. It seemed she had suffered greatly.
Seeing this, Shen Qingwan guessed she had endured too much hardship, leading to a change in her personality.
“I already told you—I have no food. You sold me to the Lu family, which means we have no ties anymore.”
Her voice was firm. Seeing her unwillingness to acknowledge them, Old Man Lu also stepped forward, blocking them.
“Shen Wenhai, we made a deal back then. One tael of silver for Shen Qingwan, and from then on, she had nothing to do with your family. Qingwan is filial—she sent you good things later on. You even tricked her out of my son’s compensation money. And now, you still have the audacity to come looking for her?”
“We married off our daughter, not sold her! There was no contract of sale! You merely gave a one-tael betrothal gift to take my daughter away. No matter what, she is still my daughter. As long as her mother and I are alive, she cannot just watch us starve. Otherwise, she is unfilial!”
Shen Wenhai acted shamelessly, knowing they lacked a legal document of sale. No matter what they said, it wouldn’t change anything.
Shen Qingwan sneered. “Do you think I care about being labeled unfilial? If you keep pestering me, I don’t mind going to the authorities and demanding the return of my husband’s compensation money. Stealing war widows’ compensation is a serious crime. If you can’t pay it back, you could spend three to five years in prison!”
“You… you ungrateful wretch! We raised you for so many years, and you’re saying we’re not even worth that little bit of silver?”
Shen Wenhai pointed at her nose, his face twisted with rage.
She laughed coldly. “Raised me? Do you even remember how I survived all those years? Did you forget?
Since I was five, I worked for the family. At eight, I cooked, washed clothes, carried water, and chopped wood. You called me a useless burden, yet you doted on Shen Qingju.
When they bullied me, you never stopped them—you even joined in.
And now, you claim to have raised me? Wasn’t I just a laborer in your house for over a decade? You even tried to sell me off to an old widower as his concubine. If he hadn’t suddenly died, I wouldn’t have even made it to the Lu family.
You never treated me like a daughter, yet you expect me to be filial? You’re delusional!”
Thinking of everything the original owner of this body had endured, Shen Qingwan seethed with rage.
The original Shen Qingwan had turned into a violent and bitter person due to years of oppression and Jiang Shi’s poor parenting.
That’s why she had abused her own children in the Lu family.
While her actions were extreme, this parasitic family was truly despicable.
Since she now occupied this body, Shen Qingwan felt she owed it to the original owner to settle these matters.
Realizing they wouldn’t get any food, Shen Wenhai grew desperate. However, the people of Dahe Village were strong in numbers, and they were no match for them.
He had no choice but to hold back.
Just as her parents were about to give up, Shen Qingju suddenly panicked. She rushed up to Qingwan and shouted:
“Shen Qingwan, give me food, and I’ll tell you a secret—a secret about your true identity!”
