Chapter 45: Drugging Yang Qingyan
Seeing that they were impervious to both soft and hard approaches, and showing no intention of giving money, Zhu Li’s anger flared up instantly. She spun around abruptly, storming out of the hospital room and started shouting loudly in the corridor, “Everyone, come and judge for yourselves! I raised my son with great difficulty, and now that he’s made something of himself, he won’t even notify his family when he’s injured! He doesn’t even recognize me as his mother anymore! How am I supposed to live from now on?!”
As she cried out, she wiped her tears with her hands, her pitiful appearance drawing the attention of several patients and their families.
Yang Qingyan, pushing Mu Nanhe’s wheelchair out of the room, noticed his face was ashen, griping tightly on the armrests with veins bulging on the back of his hands.
Observing her behavior, Yang Qingyan said, “Are you sure you want to make a scene like this? You might as well head to the military and let them investigate how you’ve treated Nanhe over the years and how you’ve treated me. And also, they should look into why Nanhe doesn’t resemble any of you.”
Zhu Li’s heart sank at this suggestion, feeling uneasy. Had they uncovered something? In a panic, she hurriedly left the scene. The crowd stopped looking at her and dispersed.
After Zhu Li left, a brief silence engulfed the ward, the air seemingly thickening with tension.
Yang Qingyan let out a gentle sigh and reached out, softly touching Mu Nanhe’s hand. Her gaze reflected concern and determination as she softly said, “Nanhe, I think you should investigate whether or not you are actually their biological child.”
Feeling the warmth of Yang Qingyan’s palm, Mu Nanhe’s heart warmed. He grasped her hand tightly, a flash of resolution appearing in his eyes as he replied, “I understand. Once I’m better, I will take the time to investigate. Even if it turns out that I am, I will find a way to cut ties with them. You are all I have left, my wife.”
Li Family
Li Fang and Li Ming met up, and as soon as they sat down, Li Ming slammed his fist onto the table, frustrated. “Aunt, I really messed up last time. I planned to do a heroic rescue for Yang Qingyan in the market, but instead, I startled them. My brothers have been watching her these past few days. Whenever Yang Qingyan goes out, Mu Nanhe follows her like a bodyguard. There’s no chance to act!”
Li Fang frowned, her fingers impatiently tapping the table as she said, “I just learned that they’re leaving Beijing in a few days. If we miss this opportunity, it will be nearly impossible to do anything to them afterward.”
Li Ming scoffed, curling his lip in disdain. “What’s there to be afraid of? Mu Nanhe is still a cripple, sitting in a wheelchair all day. He’s not that capable. I see him as nothing more than a paper tiger—nothing to worry about.”
Li Fang shot him a warning glance, her expression bleak as she admonished, “Don’t underestimate him. I’ve found out that he’s known in the military as a well-regarded soldier. His skills are quite impressive. If it comes down to a fight, we might not stand a chance against him. In my opinion, we need to find a way to separate them in the hospital and then capture Yang Qingyan alone; that’s the only way this plan will have a chance of succeeding.”
Hearing this, Li Ming felt it made sense but was still troubled. Rubbing his head, he asked, “Doing this in the hospital carries too much risk, right? There are people everywhere. Aunt, do you have any good ideas?”
Li Fang leaned closer to Li Ming, lowering her voice and speaking sinisterly, “Find a clever person. Wait for Yang Qingyan to be alone, and then drug her to make her unconscious. After that, sneak out the back door of the hospital. As for Mu Nanhe, I’ll come up with a way to stall him. As long as we’re quick and stealthy, by the time he realizes what’s happened, it will already be too late.”
Li Ming appeared hesitant, biting his lip as he contemplated for a moment. He still had concerns. “What if something goes wrong and we get caught? Can we evade responsibility?”
Li Fang impatiently glared at him, a huff escaping her lips. “When did you become so timid? Just find someone to disguise themselves and cover their face well. Besides, as long as we act quickly, if others notice something’s off, we’ll already be far away. If you’re too scared to do this, then forget about Yang Qingyan. In the future, she’ll be living happily with Mu Nanhe while you sit there crying.”
Li Ming felt provoked by her words. His face shifted from pale to flushed as he clenched his teeth angrily and declared, “Damn it! I refuse to believe that I can’t handle one woman. Aunt, you need to hold Mu Nanhe back; absolutely don’t let anything go wrong.”
Li Fang confidently nodded. “Don’t worry, I have my ways. When the time comes, I’ll bring a few more people to the hospital, disguising ourselves as visitors, and find some nonsensical matter to discuss with Mu Nanhe. He won’t be able to extricate himself for a while. You need to act quickly and not hesitate at all.”
The two carefully strategized, planning out every detail to ensure nothing could go wrong.
Here, following the plan, Li Fang brought Bai Yiling and headed to Mu Nanhe’s hospital room. Taking advantage of the moment when Yang Qingyan stepped out to get medicine for him, the two pushed the door open and entered.
Bai Yiling was the first to speak, her voice soft and overly sweet, “Nanhe, we came to see you.”
Mu Nanhe, who had been reading, frowned instantly upon hearing her voice, a flicker of displeasure crossing his eyes as he coldly replied, “Aunt, what brings you here?”
Li Fang plastered a fake smile on her face and stepped forward, feigning intimacy, “Is it wrong for an aunt to come see you? When are you going back to the military?”
Bai Yiling also hurriedly stepped closer, her eyes glistening with tears, looking pitiful as she said, “Nanhe, are you okay? I’ve been worried about you.”
Mu Nanhe was at a loss for words, utterly annoyed by their pretense of caring, as his eyes remained fixed on the door, anxiously hoping Yang Qingyan would appear soon.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Li Ming had swiftly set his plan into motion. He had bribed a nurse to lure Yang Qingyan to the stairwell under the pretense of needing help with an emergency patient.
Kind-hearted, Yang Qingyan thought of checking on the patient upon hearing the nurse’s call. When she arrived at the stairwell’s corner, a burly man had already been lying in wait. As she approached, the man sprang out from behind a door like a ghost, suddenly covering her mouth and nose from behind with a handkerchief soaked in a powerful tranquilizer.
Filled with dread, Yang Qingyan struggled desperately, waving her hands in the air and kicking her feet on the ground in an attempt to break free from the man’s hold. In the frenzy, her nails scratched a few bloody marks on the back of the man’s hand. He winced in pain but did not loosen his grip.
Yang Qingyan’s struggles intensified, and with a sharp “pop,” one of the buttons on her coat was ripped off and fell to the ground. However, her resistance gradually subsided, and ultimately she closed her eyes, going limp in the man’s arms.
Not daring to delay, the man quickly hoisted her onto his shoulder and hurried toward the hospital’s back entrance, as they had planned.
