Huo Beiqing’s expression grew heavy, his arms slightly spreading at his sides as he instinctively shielded Xia Ruanruan behind him.
Tearfully, Xia Ruanruan sobbed and complained, “They’ve gone crazy! They cornered me in the restroom and forced me, saying… saying that I was the one who made you drive her away. They insisted that I come and talk to you, to ask you not to kick her out.”
As she spoke, she grabbed the corner of Huo Beiqing’s coat. “If… if I don’t come and say this, they… they won’t let me go.”
“Ugh, I’m so scared…”
Xia Ruanruan (internally): You two are asking for a beating! If I don’t beat you to death this time, I’m not Xia! Calling yourselves crazy? Calling yourselves deranged? We’ll see about that!
Jiang Ruoman hadn’t expected Xia Ruanruan to run so fast, let alone say such things. She was stunned at first, then quickly became anxious.
Sun Zhenzhen didn’t look any better than Jiang Ruoman.
She had a bad feeling—once again, she was going to suffer because of Jiang Ruoman.
It almost felt like… like she shouldn’t have come here with Jiang Ruoman in the first place.
But Xia Ruanruan… she was truly something else. Look at her, crying like that, clearly just using tears to deceive men. Pah! What a scheming little tramp!
The doctors behind Huo Beiqing also stopped their discussion due to the sudden commotion. They stood up and observed the unfolding situation.
Jiang Ruoman anxiously tried to explain, “…Teacher—”
As soon as she uttered the first word, Huo Beiqing’s face darkened, and he corrected her sternly, “Dr. Jiang, you have already been transferred to Director Wang’s department. Calling me ‘teacher’ is no longer appropriate.”
Jiang Ruoman was unwilling but had no choice but to change her address. “…Dr. Huo, it’s not like that!”
Xia Ruanruan peeked out from behind Huo Beiqing, looking pitiful. “How is it not like that?”
“Just say it—was I dragged into the restroom by you two?”
“Did you or did you not tell me to convince Dr. Huo not to kick you out?”
“Did you or did you not ask me to beg Dr. Huo to let you stay?”
Xia Ruanruan fired off a series of questions before Jiang Ruoman could even respond. Then she pointed at the wound on her forehead. “This injury—I got it just yesterday.” She then raised her hand and pointed at Sun Zhenzhen. “She was the one who pushed me. No matter what the reason was, she pushed me, and I got hurt. That’s a fact, isn’t it?”
“In this situation, if it weren’t for your coercion, why on earth would I, out of some saintly kindness, come here to ask for trouble?” Xia Ruanruan’s voice turned even more aggrieved, her expression utterly pitiful. “You all know that Dr. Huo and I don’t have the best relationship. If he doesn’t want to keep you here, he must have his reasons. If I interfere and ask him to keep you, what will he think of me?”
“Wouldn’t that just make our already strained relationship even worse?”
Huo Beiqing: “…”
He looked down at the little head sticking out from under his arm, his brows furrowing tighter and tighter.
What kind of nonsense was this woman spouting?
By now, a crowd of doctors and nurses had gathered at the door of Huo Beiqing’s office, drawn by the commotion.
As they listened to Xia Ruanruan’s words, they began whispering among themselves.
Someone said, “But it’s a fact—anyone with a bit of sense wouldn’t risk offending Dr. Huo again for Jiang Ruoman.”
“Exactly! Even begging wouldn’t work, so who would dare make an enemy of him?”
Another person lowered their voice and murmured, “Why did Dr. Huo’s wife make a scene yesterday? Wasn’t it because Jiang Ruoman had been sticking around him for too long, making her uneasy?”
“That’s right! Now that she’s been kicked out, it’s the best thing that could’ve happened. Only a fool would try to get her to stay!”
“Exactly!”
Someone else spoke with a half-smile, “Dr. Jiang really proves you can’t judge a book by its cover. She looks so quiet and well-mannered, but who would’ve thought she had such thoughts?”
After that, many people chuckled quietly.
As for what “such thoughts” referred to, it was better left unsaid.
Xia Ruanruan’s clear and logical words left Jiang Ruoman momentarily unable to refute.
At that moment, Huo Beiqing spoke coldly, “Dr. Jiang, I don’t want this to happen a second time.”
Then, with an unreadable expression, he added, “This will greatly impact your internship evaluation.”
Jiang Ruoman bit her lip, her eyes turning red as tears welled up. She looked at Huo Beiqing’s icy expression—his handsome face was filled with nothing but indifference.
She couldn’t hold back her tears anymore.
Then she looked at Xia Ruanruan, who was hiding behind Huo Beiqing. Deep in her eyes were resentment and anger, but with so many people watching and Huo Beiqing standing right there, she had no choice but to lower her head and apologize.
“Sorry, I was impulsive and said something inappropriate. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Her words were sincere, and her attitude seemed good.
Xia Ruanruan wiped the corners of her eyes, looking pitiful. “As long as you know I have no say in this, that’s all that matters. Just don’t make things difficult for me in the future. You two really scared me just now.”
As she spoke, she looked so aggrieved that she almost started crying again.
She truly was pitiful, getting targeted by these two lunatics. Hopefully, from now on, they’d steer clear of her.
Of course, she didn’t forget to drag Sun Zhenzhen down with her. Sun Zhenzhen was so furious her eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
Xia Ruanruan was genuinely worried they might.
Jiang Ruoman, too, gritted her teeth in anger.
Both of them felt that Xia Ruanruan was insufferable—she had clearly set them up, yet now she was playing the innocent victim.
And worst of all… it now seemed like she had successfully cemented the rumor that she was deliberately seducing Dr. Huo.
The more Jiang Ruoman thought about it, the angrier she became. But she had no choice but to endure it and apologize again.
“Yes… we acted recklessly. It won’t happen again.”
With tears still hanging on her lashes, she glanced at Huo Beiqing pitifully. “Sorry, Dr. Huo, for causing you trouble.”
Huo Beiqing merely gave her a cold glance and said indifferently, “I hope this is the last time. When you know something will cause trouble, Dr. Jiang, you should think twice before doing it again.”
“You’re not a child anymore. Not everything can be forgiven with just a ‘sorry.’”
His voice was icy and sharp, leaving no room for mercy.
Some people even covered their mouths in shock. It was clear why he was so harsh.
Jiang Ruoman couldn’t bear the humiliation. She had always been admired and sought after in school—when had she ever suffered such disgrace? Covering her mouth, she ran away in tears.
Seeing Jiang Ruoman flee, Sun Zhenzhen also admitted defeat, lowering her head and mumbling, “Sorry,” before quickly turning to leave.
The doctors and nurses who had been watching the drama unfold quickly dispersed as well—Huo Beiqing’s dark expression was too much for most people to handle.
Not just them, even Xia Ruanruan couldn’t handle it. She decided to slip away too.
Quickly wiping the tears she had shed for dramatic effect, she kept her head down and said, “I won’t disturb you anymore. I’ll be heading home now. Goodbye.”
She didn’t dare call him “Uncle” again, fearing he’d criticize her for being inappropriate.
However, before she could escape, someone grabbed her by the collar from behind.
Having her “throat of fate” seized, Xia Ruanruan had no choice but to stop and turn her small, bewildered face toward the culprit.
Huo Beiqing had already turned to the other doctors in his office. “Wait here. I’ll be back shortly.”
The doctors all nodded.
Then, holding onto Xia Ruanruan’s collar, Huo Beiqing dragged her out of the office.
Xia Ruanruan had to take quick little steps to keep up with his pace.
