If Gu Jianing had heard Sheng Zexi’s thoughts, she would have thought to herself: I won’t let the food run out. As long as I have points, I can exchange for more from the system’s shopping mall. The items related to food, clothing, shelter, and transportation there are very affordable.
After waking up, Guoguo’s spirits improved, but she still clung to Gu Jianing, occasionally asking for her mother.
However, after Gu Jianing comforted her, Guoguo’s mood improved significantly.
Then, Gu Jianing became enthusiastic about feeding Guoguo. As long as she had something with her and Guoguo wanted to eat it, she would feed her without hesitation, showing no reluctance.
This scene made the mother and son who had previously asked Gu Jianing for braised pork turn green with envy.
They were all strangers, so why could she feed a little girl but not her precious son, Jinbao?
Her Jinbao was a boy, after all.
The little boy, Jinbao, also felt the same way, glaring resentfully at Guoguo, thinking that a worthless girl didn’t deserve to eat such things.
If it weren’t for the fact that Sheng Zexi and Gu Jianing had scared him off earlier, and if his parents hadn’t held him back, Jinbao might have rushed over to snatch the food Gu Jianing was feeding to Guoguo.
Another night passed, and Gu Jianing gazed out the window at the heavy snowfall, sighing inwardly.
Finally, we’re almost there.
If we didn’t arrive soon, she would either grow moldy or turn into pickled vegetables.
Yuanshan City’s train station was the final stop and the closest to the Northwest Military District.
By now, the once-crowded train had thinned out significantly, as many passengers had already gotten off at earlier stops.
With fewer people on the train, the air was fresher, but the temperature had also dropped, making it much colder.
Gu Jianing kept adding layers of clothing for herself and Guoguo.
The couple, Shen Huaiyuan and Bai Juan, who had been sharing the compartment, had gotten off at the previous stop.
“We’re almost there. Make sure to bundle up,” Sheng Zexi said as he carefully wrapped Gu Jianing in his military coat.
His coat was large, completely enveloping Gu Jianing, who was over 1.6 meters tall, making her look like a child wearing an adult’s clothes.
But neither Gu Jianing nor Sheng Zexi minded.
Gu Jianing thought: This is the warmest military coat of this era. Even though I look like a ball wrapped up in it, it’s really warm.
Although Gu Jianing loved beauty, she wasn’t the type to prioritize style over comfort.
She firmly believed that a beautiful person would still look better and more elegant wrapped in a burlap sack than an unattractive person dressed in fine clothes.
Wearing the military coat and a red scarf that covered half her face, leaving only her lively, beautiful eyes exposed, she also put on a hat to cover her head and ears.
Guoguo, on the other hand, was wrapped tightly in Gu Jianing’s cotton-padded jacket and coat.
“When we get off the train, hold Guoguo’s hand with one hand and grip my clothes with the other. Stay close behind me, and don’t let go no matter what, understand?”
Sheng Zexi gave detailed instructions. Since he had to carry the luggage, he couldn’t hold Gu Jianing’s hand.
“When we get off, a military vehicle will be waiting to pick us up.”
“Okay, I understand,” Gu Jianing replied obediently.
Not long after Sheng Zexi finished packing the luggage, the train announcement came on, signaling that they were about to arrive at Yuanshan Station.
As the train slowly came to a stop, Sheng Zexi carried or shouldered the luggage while Gu Jianing held Guoguo’s hand with one hand and tightly gripped Sheng Zexi’s sleeve with the other, slowly making their way off the train.
Meanwhile, at Yuanshan Station, many people were waiting.
Among them were Lin Xing and his wife, Zhang Shuwang.
Lin Xing had taken time off to pick up Zhang Shuwang. Her train had arrived earlier, so Lin Xing had already been with her for a while.
After picking her up, they hadn’t left.
Lin Xing had found out that Sheng Zexi’s train would arrive soon, so the couple decided to wait. Only by seeing Guoguo safe and sound could they feel at ease.
“The train’s here. People are getting off. Ah Xing, do you see your comrade and Guoguo?” As soon as the train stopped, Zhang Shuwang couldn’t help but look around anxiously.
Her eyes were still slightly swollen from crying.
“Don’t worry, let me look,” Lin Xing said, scanning the crowd.
He thought that Sheng Zexi, being tall, would be easy to spot.
Just as he thought this, his eyes landed on a figure carrying so much luggage that it almost buried him.
If it weren’t for the olive-green uniform, the tall stature, and the familiar, slightly arrogant face, Lin Xing might not have recognized him.
Is this really Sheng Zexi?
Although they hadn’t interacted much, Lin Xing knew that Sheng Zexi disliked trouble and burdens.
Even when he needed to carry things, he always kept them as light as possible.
For example, Sheng Zexi would rather freeze than carry heavy bedding.
But now, unless he was mistaken, what Sheng Zexi was carrying on his shoulder was indeed a quilt.
It seems that marriage changes a man. Sheng Zexi, after getting married, has actually changed his ways. It seems he really loves his wife.
“Battalion Commander Sheng!” Lin Xing waved.
Sheng Zexi, who was walking forward while keeping an eye on his wife behind him, suddenly heard someone calling his name.
He looked up and saw Lin Xing, along with a woman beside him—likely Lin Xing’s wife.
“Ningning, Guoguo’s parents are here.”
Gu Jianing blinked. That was fast.
As Sheng Zexi led Gu Jianing and Guoguo forward, Lin Xing stepped up and took some of the luggage from Sheng Zexi.
“Battalion Commander Sheng, I happened to be here, so I came to pick you up. I told the soldier you sent not to come,” Lin Xing explained.
Sheng Zexi nodded. So that’s what happened. “Thank you, Battalion Commander Lin.”
“The car is parked not far away. Let’s take the luggage over now.” Lin Xing’s gaze briefly swept over the figure in olive green behind Sheng Zexi, noticing the snowflakes settling on her coat.
The tightly wrapped “ball” only revealed a pair of lively eyes.
Just from her eyes, one could tell she was a beautiful and spirited girl.
She must be Battalion Commander Sheng’s wife—the one who first noticed the kidnappers.
However, Lin Xing didn’t linger on her for too long, only glancing briefly before looking away.
He had many words of gratitude to say to Sheng Zexi and his wife, but he thought it would be better to move the luggage to the car first, as the area was crowded.
His gaze then fell on the small figure tightly held by his wife, and the weight in his heart lifted.
“Guoguo, my Guoguo…”
The moment Zhang Shuwang saw Guoguo, she rushed over, knelt down, and hugged her tightly, as if holding a precious treasure she had lost and found again. Tears streamed down her face.
Guoguo, too, buried herself in Zhang Shuwang’s arms, crying loudly and repeatedly calling, “Mommy, mommy…”
As Zhang Shuwang comforted Guoguo, she also checked her over to make sure she was unharmed.
