Everyone threw themselves into the work with great enthusiasm.
Those who could use their claws did so, while those who couldn’t use tools instead.
They left the middle section of the land for Wen Ze, and the others dug outward in different directions.
Luan Xun suddenly thought of something and reminded them, “Everyone, don’t wander off. If you come across swamp and accidentally fall in, don’t panic. We’ll pull you out soon.”
Yu Qiao nodded, thinking that there were no swamps in the South Mountain Tribe, so he mainly spoke to Wen Ze and the others:
“The more you struggle in a swamp, the deeper you sink.”
Wen Ze and the others took his words seriously.
Fortunately, even Yin He was careful this time, and no accidents occurred.
In less than two hours, they had thoroughly searched the nearby lowlands. Except for some particularly small ones, they harvested nearly three baskets of potatoes.
A few adult Beastmen evenly distributed the load, each carrying more than half a basket on their backs.
Yu Qiao straightened up and lightly pounded his stiff lower back with his fist before saying, “The sun is about to set. Let’s hurry and check out the yellow grain.”
“Let’s go.”
The group had developed a mutual understanding, with Yu Qiao and Feng Jian leading the way in front, Wen Ze following on the ground, and Luan Xun at the back.
Unlike before, Yu Qiao said he wanted to move around a bit, so instead of riding on Feng Jian’s back, he spread his wings and flew on his own.
Wen Ze noticed that when bird-type half-beastmen fly, they instinctively let out a few sharp calls. They emit a high-pitched and piercing tone, which sounds pretty impressive.
After another burst of fast-paced travel, they arrived at a patch of dense, flourishing grassland in about twenty minutes.
Yu Qiao landed on the ground, his white wings folding back and transforming into two lean, muscular arms.
“Follow me.” He waved his hand and turned to walk ahead.
Judging by his familiarity with the area, he had likely scouted this place a few times before.
Before long, they stopped in front of a patch of green grain.
Although it was called a patch, there were also plenty of wild grasses mixed in.
“Yu Qiao, is this the yellow grain you mentioned?” Wen Ze took two steps forward, pushed aside a few weeds, and precisely grasped a grain spike.
His eyes sparkled as he looked at the small, shelled grains, tightly clustered into a long string.
The weight on his fingers was not light, indicating that this batch of grains had matured well.
Judging by their color, the color of the grains indeed suggested they were nearing maturity.
Yu Qiao confirmed, “Yes. Do you recognize it?”
Wen Ze grinned. “Of course! This is exactly what I was looking for!”
As he spoke, he plucked a small grain, used his fingernail to peel off the husk, and revealed a pale golden kernel. Bringing it to his nose, he inhaled the faint aroma of grain.
This was a type of millet known scientifically as Setaria italica, commonly referred to as yellow grain or large yellow grain.
It resembled regular millet but was larger and came in two varieties—sticky and non-sticky.
The sticky variety was better suited for brewing alcohol rather than steaming and eating directly.
Alcohol had countless uses, and Wen Ze had been dreaming of brewing high-proof liquor someday!
He just wasn’t sure which variety this yellow grain belonged to.
Hearing Wen Ze’s words, Yu Qiao and the others were delighted.
“That’s great!”
Wen Ze held the rice grains and asked them, “Do you have any grain in your territory similar to this? Same color and shape, but smaller in size?”
After thinking for a moment, he added two more differences in the appearance of the grain.
The members of the Feathered Fierce Tribe exchanged glances before Yu Qiao finally said, “I haven’t seen any… Is the smaller yellow grain better? We’ll keep an eye out for it.”
“They’re all fine, thank you for your help.”
Luan Xun waved his hand. “It’s no trouble at all. As long as we can help you, that’s what matters.”
Feng Jian asked, “What should we do with this yellow grain? It’s getting dark, and we probably won’t finish harvesting today.”
Luan Xun said, “We can wait until tomorrow and bring more people to gather.”
Wen Ze responded, “When I checked just now, I noticed some of the grain heads had already been gnawed by wild mice. If we leave them overnight, we’ll lose even more. Let’s harvest them today.”
“No need to go through the trouble of picking them one by one. Just use tools or pull them out by hand—cut down the whole stalk. Once they’re dried, I’ll figure out a way to thresh them.”
“Alright, I’ll fly up and call some tribe members over to help.”
After saying that, Luan Xun transformed into a massive golden eagle and let out a cry toward the distance.
Wen Ze and the others didn’t wait and bent down to start cutting the yellow grain.
It was similar to when they had harvested the mung beans before. So Wen Ze was already quite familiar with the task.
Everyone had their own methods, as long as they took care not to damage the grain heads, it’s okay.
The Feathered Fierce Tribe truly lived up to their name. Wen Ze had only cut a few bundles, and they were already flying over.
Aside from the beastmen, Wen Ze also saw a few familiar half-beastmen, including the cheerful Chang Chuan.
“Wen Ze, we’re here to help!”
Wen Ze smiled and said, “Thank you, everyone.”
Taking advantage of the time, Yu Qiao explained the process of harvesting the yellow grain to them, and they quickly got to work.
With many hands, the task went faster, and soon, a large patch was cleared.
Yu Qiao said, “When I was flying in the sky before, this looked like just a small plot of land, but now that we’re cutting it, it turns out to be quite a lot.”
Feng Jian added, “Yes, and if we really need to thresh it, we’d probably need a big sack, right?”
Chang Chuan laughed, “That’d be great for snacking—picking at the grains one by one. Even if we keep eating all the way until next year, we still wouldn’t run out.”
Yin He, who was younger and lacked the stamina, gradually fell behind.
However, he was still quite interested and asked the people from the Feathered Fierce Tribe, “Are you all leaving some behind, or is it all for my brother?”
Everyone turned to Luan Xun, the one who could make the decision. He said, “There isn’t that much grain, so we’ll just give it all to your brother. Keeping it would only be a hassle for us. If next year’s harvest goes well, you can teach us how to thresh it.”
Wen Ze readily agreed, “Alright, then I’ll leave a basket of potatoes for you.”
Luan Xun and the others chuckled. “Deal.”
Despite their efforts to move quickly, they only finished harvesting the yellow grain after sunset.
On the way back, the beastmen were still carrying the things, while Wen Ze, with his hands empty, sat on Zhuo Mu’s back.
Feeling embarrassed about riding the golden eagle again, Yin He shifted into his beast form and ran alongside them.
Luan Xun soared above, his wide wings casting a shadow over the land.
He called out to a few tribe members, “Fly faster! Head back and get the water boiling.”
At his command, they broke away from the group, shooting off like meteors.
Wen Ze looked up; his face full of envy.
Chang Chuan flapped his wings and flew above Wen Ze’s head while grinning. “Wen Ze, how about I carry you for a bit?”
Wen Ze was taken aback. “Huh? How would you carry me?”
The half-beastmen of the Feathered Fierce Tribe were built even leaner than him, and their wings were much shorter than those of beastmen. Could he really lift him?
Chang Chuan waved his foot at him: “I can grab you with my claws! You know my claws are really strong. Although I can’t hold onto heavy things and fly for long, flying a short distance is still possible! So, what do you say? Want to give it a try?”
Wen Ze was tempted but didn’t agree right away. Instead, he turned to glance at the giant python’s head.
The python tilted its head slightly, its red eyes meet his gaze.
Chang Chuan said carelessly, “Zhuo Mu, I’m a half-beastman. What’s there to disagree with?
Wen Ze: “…”
“……I didn’t disagree. Just fly lower and more steadily.”
That way, if anything unexpected happened, he could still catch Wen Ze.
Chang Chuan cheered, “Got it! Wen Ze, lift your arms. I’ll grab you under the armpits!”
Wen Ze was so excited that he immediately stood on the python’s back and raised his arms high.
Luan Xun was about to say, “You’re not stable. Maybe let Yu Qiao take him instead—”
But before he could finish, Chang Chuan completely ignored him. With a joyful cry, he dove downward. His legs transformed into bird claws, locking onto Wen Ze’s armpits. Using the wind to his advantage, he shot straight into the sky!
“Ha!” The sudden weightlessness made Wen Ze’s eyes widen, his scalp tingle, and an overwhelming sense of comfort washed over him!
He was truly flying! Hahaha!
Chang Chuan’s large claws gripped him firmly. Though sharp, his talons remained retracted, pressing against Wen Ze’s clothes without piercing them.
At the same time, the warmth of his claws seeped through the fabric.
Chang Chuan flapped his wings a couple of times and flew higher.
Looking down, Wen Ze estimated they were already more than twenty meters above the ground—about the height of a ten-story building.
The view from up here was amazing. Whether it was psychological or not, the air even felt fresher.
He took a few deep breaths, then spread his arms wide, enjoying the wind rushing past him.
Come to think of it, this must feel similar to paragliding, something he had only ever watched in videos before.
This was so much fun! Hahaha!
“Wen Ze, are you getting used to it?” Chang Chuan called out loudly.
“Yes!”
“Then I’ll add some flying techniques!”
“Huh?”
Luan Xun’s eyes twitched as he shouted, “Chang Chuan, what tricks? You can barely keep yourself in the air! Stop, stop, stop!”
Chang Chuan clicked his tongue: “I know what I’m doing!”
With that, he flapped his wings even faster, determined not to be caught.
But what Luan Xun had said was true. Holding onto Wen Ze, Chang Chuan could only tilt slightly to the sides; it was impossible to make sharp spins in the air!
However, the others didn’t know that. They feared he might drop Wen Ze. If Chang Chuan hurt himself, it would be one thing, but if Wen Ze got injured, that would be a serious problem.
So, they chased after him even harder.
Hearing all the shouting and squawking behind him, Wen Ze felt like the whole sky had become noisy.
Instead of being worried, he urged Chang Chuan, “Hurry, go for it!”
Fueled by enthusiasm, Chang Chuan was about to dive forward when Zhuo Mu suddenly appeared in front of them.
His massive body stretched upward, lifting his enormous head high!
To be clear, his body was over fifty meters long, and Chang Chuan had only flown about twenty meters high!
As his red eyes cast a chilling gaze downward and his tongue flicked out, a cold and oppressive feeling swept over Chang Chuan, like being locked in the sights of a natural predator.
Chang Chuan stiffened, nearly losing his grip on Wen Ze!
Seeing the distance between them shrink rapidly, Wen Ze’s pupils shrank. “Zhuo Mu, we’re going to crash!”
But of course, Zhuo Mu wouldn’t let that happen.
With a swift motion, his tail swept across, and Wen Ze instinctively shut his eyes.
In just a few seconds, before he even knew how it happened, Zhuo Mu had already wrapped his tail securely around him!
Zhuo Mu glanced at Chang Chuan indifferently, then lowered the front half of his body, but his tail was still holding Wen Ze up.
“Zhuo Mu?” Wen Ze called out in confusion.
Zhuo Mu said calmly, “This way, I’m about as high as you when you’re flying.”
…It wasn’t exactly the same as flying, but Wen Ze didn’t say anything.
“But you’ll get tired.”
“This isn’t tiring. If you like it, I can carry you like this every time we go out.”
It was definitely safer than flying around in the sky.
Wen Ze burst out laughing. “I think I’ll pass! Isn’t it more comfortable to sit or lie down? Hahaha.”
The Feathered Fierce Tribe members caught up as well. Yu Qiao lightly flapped his wings against Chang Chuan’s body.
Chang Chuan stuck out his tongue and let out a soft snort at Zhuo Mu.
Hearing Wen Ze’s words, everyone laughed.
With all the chatting and laughter, time flew by, and they soon returned to Luan Xun’s place.
The beastmen who arrived earlier had already boiled water and stocked up on firewood and food.
As soon as Wen Ze landed, Zhuo Mu walked over and asked, “Do you want to eat potatoes tonight?”
“Yes! We have two baskets, let’s take out half a basket to eat!”
Luan Xun also approached. “No need to use yours. Didn’t our tribe get a basket too? Let’s use ours.”
Wen Ze declined, “You already helped us find the potatoes and grains. How can we take yours as well?”
Luan Xun insisted, “This is our thanks for teaching us how to weave and make a weaving frame. Just accept it this time. Look, many of our tribe members want to try them. We can’t have our guests providing both the effort and the ingredients.”
Wen Ze smiled. “Alright then, thank you.”
Luan Xun replied, “We’re friends, no need to be so polite.”
Yu Qiao and Chang Chuan stayed behind to help, smiling as they asked, “Is there anything we can do?”
Wen Ze thought for a moment. “Start by washing half a basket of potatoes, then peel them. The skins of potatoes are thin, so if you soak them, you should be able to rub them off with your hands.”
The two half-beastmen replied together, “Got it!”
Zhuo Mu and Yin He helped Wen Ze, as if they were at home.
Yin He was curious about everything from the Feathered Fierce Tribe, from the ingredients to the pots and pans, and he asked about everything, like a hundred thousand whys.
Fortunately, there were a lot of people to answer him, or Wen Ze’s ears would have been worn out from hearing him call “Brother” over and over.
Once the potatoes were washed, Wen Ze instructed them to cut some into cubes, some into shreds, and some into strips.
The cubes would be put into the meat and vegetable stew, and once the potatoes absorbed the broth, they would be so soft and savory, they would taste even better than the meat.
He first soaked the shredded potatoes in water to remove the surface starch, then heated the pan over high heat. He used shallots and garlic slices to make a stir-fried potato dish.
As for the potato strips, he soaked them in salted water for about half an hour.
With the meat and vegetables simmering in the pot and the stir-fried potato strips ready, the entire camp was filled with the aroma of food.
He turned to Zhuo Mu and said, “Can you use another pot and heat some oil?”
Zhuo Mu nodded. “Okay.”
Wen Ze took out the potato strips, drained the water, and placed them in a large basin.
Then, he took out the starch he carried with him and coated each potato stick thoroughly.
By the time he finished, Zhuo Mu had built a new fire pit, and hot oil was heating in the clay pot.
Wen Ze tested the oil temperature with chopsticks. Once it was ready, he poured in the starch-coated potato strips.
As the oil bubbled and sizzled, he patiently waited.
When the potato strips floated to the surface; he gently stirred them with chopsticks. Once he felt the timing was right, he used a homemade strainer to scoop out the golden fries.
“They still need to drain a bit before eating…” Mid-sentence, he looked up and saw everyone staring at him with eager, shining eyes. Amused, he chuckled, “What’s wrong?”
Yin He swallowed hard. “Brother, it smells amazing! The roasted potatoes you made last time were already so good, but these fried ones smell even better!”
Zhuo Mu recalled how Wen Ze had only gotten three potatoes last time and had even saved one for him. The corners of his lips curled slightly.
The people of the Feathered Fierce Tribe were equally shocked. “Is this really that ordinary-looking roots?”
“We’ve fried potatoes before, but they never smelled this good!”
“Beast God, no wonder Wen Ze insisted on finding them!”
Wen Ze’s smile deepened. “You haven’t even tasted them yet. Wait a moment, I’ll prepare two dipping sauces.”
“There’s even a dipping sauce?!” Wouldn’t that make it even more delicious?
Wen Ze first made a spiced salt dipping sauce using salt powder and ground thorny fruit.
Then, he asked the half-beastmen of the Feathered Fierce Tribe for some sweet and sour berries and made a fruit jam.
“Alright, everyone, come try them! These fried potato sticks need to be eaten hot; otherwise, they’ll turn soft and won’t taste as good.”
“Coming!” Yin He was the most enthusiastic, quickly grabbing a fry with chopsticks, dipping it into the sweet and sour jam, and popping it into his mouth.
“Mm!”
The crispy texture, the rich aroma of fried potatoes, and the distinct yet complementary flavors of the fruit jam exploded in his mouth—it was unbelievably delicious!
Wen Ze and the others also took a bite, their faces lighting up with amazement and satisfaction.
“So good!” Chang Chuan crunched away, unable to stop. “This is the best roots I’ve ever eaten!”
Yu Qiao sighed. “It really smells incredible… What a shame that we already dug up all the potatoes in the lowlands.”
Chang Chuan’s eyes widened. “What? So if we want to eat them again, we have to wait until next year?”
Luan Xun made up his mind. “Wen Ze, let’s not eat the remaining half-basket. We’ll save them as seeds. You have to teach us how to plant potatoes, please.”
Seeing their enthusiasm for farming, Wen Ze grinned. “Alright, I’ll explain how to store the seeds later.”
After having French fries, everyone still wanted more, so they tried the stir-fried shredded potatoes and braised potatoes with meat, which were also highly praised.
When Wen Ze mentioned that with the right soil, potatoes would grow large and yield a high harvest, they couldn’t wait for the next spring to arrive.
After dinner, everyone helped clean up. By then, the bright moon hung high in the sky.
After a long day of travel, Zhuo Mu still seemed fine, but Wen Ze and Yin He were already yawning from exhaustion.
Luan Xun wanted to chat with them a bit longer, but seeing this, he thoughtfully asked, “Wen Ze, what are you planning to do next?”
Rubbing his eyes, Wen Ze replied, “The autumn harvest festival is coming up, so we won’t stay in your tribe for long. We need to return and prepare goods for the gathering.”
The people of the Feathered Fierce Tribe were a bit disappointed.
Luan Xun said, “Then tomorrow morning, we’ll take you around our territory, and you can head back in the afternoon.”
Wen Ze nodded. “Alright.”
Yu Qiao asked, “And the thing you wanted to show us, will we see it in the morning?”
Wen Ze agreed, “Yes, yes.”
Luan Xun smiled. “Alright then, we won’t chat for long tonight. Go get some rest.”
The Feathered Fierce Tribe prepared two nests for them, both of which were spacious enough to walk around in without any problem.
Wen Ze still shared a nest with Yin He. Afraid of crushing the tree, Yin He remained in his human form.
He tossed and turned in the nest, muttering, “Changing places feels a bit uncomfortable. I probably won’t be able to sleep tonight.”
Then, less than two minutes later, Wen Ze heard his breathing become slow and steady.
“…”
Shaking his head with a smile, Wen Ze closed his eyes as well.
The next morning, after washing up and having breakfast, they went to find Luan Xun.
This time, Yu Qiao and Chang Chuan were not present. The ones following behind Luan Xun were all young men with strong auras and composed expressions.
Wen Ze guessed that they were the leaders of the Feathered Fierce Tribe.
Sure enough, Luan Xun greeted them with a smile and made introductions.
“They are the core members of the tribe. You can speak freely.”
Wen Ze nodded and said, “We’ve already made an exchange using pottery in our tribe, and you’ve seen the dyed fabric, so I’ll show you something new.”
Under everyone’s watchful eyes, Wen Ze took out a large piece of pale moon-colored glass from his space.
It was the best piece from the last batch they had fired, so he had brought it along specially.
As soon as it appeared, the expressions of the Feathered Fierce Tribe members changed drastically, and the surroundings fell silent.
Wen Ze curved his lips into a smile and said, “We call this glass.”
Luan Xun and the others snapped out of their daze and asked in shock, “Wen Ze, don’t tell us this was made by your tribe too?”
A beastman behind him muttered, “That can’t be… Isn’t this jade? It must have been mined, right?”
“But how could there be such a large, perfectly smooth piece of jade?”
“My goodness, I’ve lived for decades and have never seen jade with such an even color and such a beautiful shine!”
“Wen Ze, hurry and tell us more!”
Everyone was getting anxious and stared at Wen Ze, waiting for his response.
Wen Ze grinned and said, “Yes, we made this. It’s not jade, but its texture is quite similar. It can be broken down and polished into jewelry.”
Luan Xun’s eyes widened in shock. “Something this rare, and you actually want to break it?!”
“Beast God, absolutely not! It should be properly preserved and kept whole!”
Wen Ze just smiled without saying anything.
What was rare was the method of making glass—the raw materials were easy to obtain.
Zhuo Mu, understanding him well, took the initiative to speak. “Do you want to take a closer look?”
Luan Xun and the others exclaimed, “We can actually hold it?!”
Zhuo Mu nodded. “Just be careful not to drop it.”
Yin He added playfully, “If you break it, you’ll have to compensate for it.”
The people of the Feathered Fierce Tribe hesitated. “Maybe we shouldn’t touch it… We’re afraid we won’t be able to pay for it.”
Only then did Wen Ze smile and say, “Glass isn’t as expensive as you think. A piece like this can be exchanged for goods equivalent to three pieces of beast hide. If you want more, I can lower the price—two and a half hides per piece.”
“What? Only three beast hides?”
“That cheap?!”
“A single beast hide’s worth of glass could make an entire set of jewelry!”
Wen Ze asked, “So, do you want to take a look?”
The people of the Feathered Fierce Tribe answered together, “Yes, yes, yes!”
They eagerly took the glass and examined it from all angles, their eyes filled with admiration and delight.
Luan Xun praised, “It’s so beautiful… Wen Ze, I’ll take three pieces first!”
The others followed immediately. “I want two pieces!”
“I’ll take one!”
Beast hides weren’t in short supply, and being able to exchange them for such beautiful glass felt like a great deal.
Exchanging sand for beast hides, Wen Ze also felt like he was making a huge profit.
With a smile, he asked, “Aren’t you curious about the other uses of glass?”
Luan Xun was intrigued. “Oh? There’s more?”
Seeing their sincerity, Wen Ze patiently explained the many uses of glass.
This only made everyone even more eager to place orders.
Wen Ze pulled out a small booklet. “Alright, no need to rush. I’ll write down each order one by one. Once the glass is ready, I’ll deliver it to you.”
After wrapping up the exchange and packing, the Feathered Fierce Tribe eagerly offered to show Wen Ze and his group around their territory.
As for where to go, everyone had the same idea—
“Our territory has the sea! Let’s go to the beach!”
