Chapter 29 Settling Down in the Village
The car moved slowly, and the entire village gradually appeared before their eyes.
This was a village built along the road, with most houses below the highway. A small stone road led down, and one or two houses were inside the highway.
Strangely, they didn’t see a single zombie or person.
The village was unusually quiet. Where had the people gone?
Did the whole village escape? But where could they escape to?
Lin Mu looked at Fu Jingmo with a serious expression, and Fu Jingmo raised an eyebrow in a reassuring manner.
“Find a place to park. It’s getting dark, and we can’t go any further. Let’s rest here tonight.”
Regardless, there were no zombies here, there were houses for people to stay, and Fu Jingmo wanted to see what the situation in this village was.
Lin Mu parked the car in front of a house by the roadside.
There were few houses above, and the closest one was two hundred meters away from their house.
And it’s right next to the highway. If anything happens, they could get in the car and leave as soon as possible.
The car stopped, and Fu Jingmo got out of the car a step ahead, and stood on a stone, observing the surroundings.
He stared at the houses in the distance, feeling for a while, but found nothing unusual. This was an empty village.
He Ze in the back seat, also woke up, rubbed his eyes, looked sleepy and asked confusedly, “Mumu, where are we? Are we staying here tonight?”
“Yeah,” Lin Mu unfastened his seatbelt, turned around to look at him, and said, “Pack your bags and get off the car.”
He Ze responded, handing Lin Mu’s bag to him, and the two got out of the car.
Fu Jingmo was tall, standing on a stone, and Lin Mu had to look up at him.
He wore a black vest tucked into camouflage pants, black military boots on his feet, a slender waist, and exposed shoulders and arms with smooth muscles.
Lin Mu suddenly felt a bit strange in his heart, thinking that Fu Jingmo was indeed handsome. Without thinking much, he took a step forward and stood next to him.
“Is there anything unusual?”
“This village is empty. Let’s go into the house and take a look.”
Fu Jingmo stepped down from the stone. When he was serious, he always liked to frown, and looked serious.
Lin Mu nodded, and a few people walked towards the house. By now, the sky had completely darkened.
This house was a somewhat dilapidated adobe house with a wooden door, mud walls, and only one floor.
Fu Jingmo walked ahead, pushed open the door, and the old door made a creaking sound. He Ze reached out and grabbed Lin Mu’s sleeve.
Lowering his voice, he whispered in Lin Mu’s ear.
“Mumu, have you ever watched ‘Strange Events in the Mountain Village’?”
It was a horror film about events in a village. Lin Mu knocked on He Ze’s head and said, “Yes, I have, and it’s not scary at all, okay?”
“Where is it not scary at all!!! Are your nerves thicker than water pipes?!” He Ze complained bitterly.
Ignoring He Ze’s grumbling, Lin Mu composed himself and followed him into the house.
Perhaps due to recent rainfall, there was a damp smell in the house. Fortunately, he had encountered far more nauseating odors, so he was immune to this.
The interior furnishings were not strange at all – just an ordinary rural house. In the middle was a large room with a round wooden table that seemed quite old, with red paint peeling off its surface.
On the left was a narrow kitchen with a simple stove and an electric rice cooker.
The room on the right was for sleeping, with a relatively large wooden bed. Lin Mu noticed that the bed was a bit messy, indicating that the people living here didn’t seem prepared to leave.
After inspecting a few rooms, Fu Jingmo locked the front door.
They put down their backpacks and lit a candle on the wooden table. Lin Mu took out instant noodles and sausages from his backpack, and prepared dinner.
There was water in the kitchen’s basin, but who knows when it was collected. Washing hands and faces seemed fine, but for eating, they used their own bottled mineral water.
The stove was a traditional rural one, inconvenient for starting a fire. So, they just took out He Ze’s portable stove and began cooking noodles on the wooden table.
He Ze followed Lin Mu closely, like a dog chasing meat, not budging an inch. Lin Mu found it both amusing and exasperating.
Watching He Ze’s behavior, Fu Jingmo chuckled and, with a knowing look, deliberately asked, “What? Are you afraid of ghosts?”
He Ze glared angrily, “Not afraid! I just want to be with Mumu! Are you jealous!”
“Yeah, jealous,” Fu Jingmo glanced at the empty seats beside the wooden table. It could accommodate five or six people, and there were still two vacant spots.
Fu Jingmo, with a cold expression, said sarcastically, “Be careful, there might be an extra ‘person’ sitting next to you when we eat.”
“Damn, damn, damn!!! Bro, you’re my brother, don’t say that!!!”
In an instant, He Ze jumped up and stuck to Lin Mu. While covering his ears, he gestured surrender. This caused Lin Mu to shake the chopsticks in his hand, and the noodles fell onto the table.
“…”
Lin Mu sighed, “Don’t waste food…”
He glanced at Fu Jingmo and realized that he was not as serious as usual, showing a more childish side.
Fu Jingmo smirked, looking quite different from his usual serious demeanor.
The candlelight cast a somewhat hazy glow on their faces. In this relatively relaxed atmosphere, the group finished dinner. After a day of travel, even simple noodles were satisfying.
