Chapter 8: Wreaths Delivered to the Door (1/2)
Feng Hongmei forcibly dragged Zhao Qingfeng downstairs, stuffed him into a tricycle, and insisted he immediately take the last bus back to the city.
Zhao Qingfeng wanted to say something,
But Feng Hongmei wouldn’t allow it. She hurriedly paid the fare, and only when the tricycle, spewing black smoke, turned the corner and disappeared from sight did she return home, worried and anxious.
She believed,
The pains of adulthood should never be shared with a child; she alone would bear them all.
Her biggest fear was hindering Zhao Qingfeng’s education.
After all, getting her son into university was Old Zhao’s last wish before his death.
Returning upstairs, she went straight to the window, looking towards the direction of the entrance, staring unblinkingly. Her expression was one of pain and helplessness, as if waiting for some terrible event to occur.
…………………………..
“May 10, 2001, today Brother Qingfeng accidentally touched my chest, and in front of so many classmates, oh my god, I’m really going to die of embarrassment…”
“He also took 300 yuan from me, I wonder how he’ll pay me back a hundredfold.”
“That bad guy, he just went to the city for a month and already learned the bad habit of bragging.”
“Ha ha, now he’s probably getting beaten up by Aunt Feng, right? Serves him right, who asked him to drop out and come back…”
At the same time Feng Hongmei returned home, Shen Lingyao was in her spacious and cozy room, enjoying today’s beautiful memories.
She smiled as she wrote in her diary.
Images from the day kept flashing in her mind.
Zhao Qingfeng’s ‘I missed you.’
It seemed to touch a soft, inexplicable place in her heart, making it unforgettable.
“Was his reason true?”
“It wasn’t just because he was mischievous and got sent back, was it?”
“It doesn’t matter, as long as he’s back, la la la!”
“Even if he doesn’t get into university, I can support him, no no, I can’t just support him for nothing, I’ll make him cook, do laundry, and even pour foot bath water for me every day, hmph!”
Shen Lingyao wrote for a while, then put down her pen, resting her chin on her hands.
Her two small feet, clad in white cotton socks, gently swung under the table.
One moment she believed Zhao Qingfeng really came back for her.
The next moment she thought he was a complete bad guy, and everything was just a prank.
“Ah, it’s so annoying!”
“I don’t want to think about him anymore!”
The girl’s thoughts spilled out, just as her mother, Ding Xiang, pushed open the door.
Ding Xiang was also beautiful, and mother and daughter looked as if they were cast from the same mold.
She carried a plate of sliced oranges and warm milk into the room, gently placing them on the table.
Seeing Shen Lingyao’s flushed face, she touched her forehead, asking in confusion, “Yaoyao, do you have a fever?”
“Ah? Maybe a little, it’s too hot outside, I might have caught a cold…”
Shen Lingyao clumsily covered up, causing Ding Xiang to pause, then laugh softly.
A mother knows her daughter best.
As a mother, how could she not understand Shen Lingyao’s thoughts?
She had watched the two children grow up together.
Childhood sweethearts.
Innocent companions.
Especially recently, the burgeoning romantic feelings hidden in her daughter’s heart were clear to her.
But thinking of her old friend, Ding Xiang worried again.
When it rains, it pours.
She knew about her friend’s debts and was aware that the beer factory was about to conduct widespread layoffs.
Feng Hongmei was among those to be laid off.
Ding Xiang had begged Old Shen for help, but he firmly refused.
Because of the issue with Old Zhao, he had already caused dissatisfaction in the factory management.
But he had prepared a red envelope of three thousand yuan, hoping Feng Hongmei could start a small stall after being laid off, to have a backup plan.
But,
Compared to another impending major trouble, these issues seemed trivial, yet there was no need to explain any of this to Shen Lingyao.
Ding Xiang was about to advise her daughter to study hard when the door was suddenly knocked open by Zhao Qingfeng.
“Little Feng?”
She was unaware that Zhao Qingfeng had dropped out and returned.
