Chapter 8: Wreaths Delivered to the Door (2/2)
“Aunt Ding, I came to ask Yaoyao about homework.”
Zhao Qingfeng smiled guiltily, quickly returning to his normal self. After finding a suitable excuse, he briefly explained the reason for his return.
“Missing home is not a reason, the study environment in the city is so good…”
Ding Xiang frowned, glancing at the clock on the wall, appearing slightly panicked.
Zhao Qingfeng noticed it; he came back precisely to find out what was going on.
But Aunt Ding didn’t explain, instead pulling him into the room and calling Shen Lingyao as well, under the pretext of cleaning the room. She pushed them both into the sunny study room, out of sight of the main gate of the complex.
After making polite conversation for half an hour, Aunt Ding left the study room in a hurry, locking the door behind her.
“Little Feng, I’m punishing you on behalf of your mom.”
“The door is locked. Study hard tonight, and I’ll let you out after your Uncle Shen finishes the factory meeting.”
“If you need water, just tell me.”
“Yaoyao, explain more problems to Little Feng. You two must not fool around. I’ll go and talk to your mom about him dropping out.”
If this were his 18-year-old self in his previous life, Zhao Qingfeng might have believed such words meant to pacify a child.
But not now.
Since entering the door, he had noticed the fleeting tension in Aunt Ding’s expression.
Combining this with his mother’s panic,
He was sure something big was going to happen today.
And this must be the fundamental reason his mother insisted on sending him to study in the city!
“What did you say to Aunt Feng, she didn’t tell you to go back, did she?”
Shen Lingyao, who loved the feeling of being alone, naively asked her most worrisome question.
“I keep my word; you will have me in your future.”
Zhao Qingfeng gently promised, then frowned and walked quickly to the window.
“Who wants you around, I wish you would fly overseas so I never have to see you again!”
Shen Lingyao pouted, glaring at Zhao Qingfeng from the side.
Expecting him to continue bickering as usual, Shen Lingyao was surprised to find that Zhao Qingfeng had already opened the window, jumped onto the windowsill, and swiftly leaped to the balcony of the second floor.
“What are you doing?”
Shen Lingyao was startled.
“Shh…”
Zhao Qingfeng gestured for silence.
“Brother Qingfeng, come back, or I’ll tell my mom!”
Shen Lingyao, from the other side of the window, grabbed Zhao Qingfeng’s ear, fearing he would fall.
“Yaoyao, what’s happening today might determine whether I can stay or not. If you really want me to stay, don’t interfere. Didn’t you hear that sound?”
Zhao Qingfeng had no time to think.
Because he had already heard a harsh noise.
It wasn’t some youngster’s dynamic song blasting from a motorcycle, nor a pop song from a store. It was a series of funeral music, played on suona and drums, getting louder as it approached.
Shen Lingyao heard it too, her face filled with confusion.
Who died, and why such a grand procession?
Zhao Qingfeng took the opportunity to break free, crouched on the balcony edge, and then leaped down.
Though it wasn’t as high as the third floor of City No. 1 Middle School,
His previously sprained ankle hurt again, causing him to grimace in pain.
“Brother Qingfeng! Are you okay?”
Shen Lingyao shouted anxiously from the window.
Zhao Qingfeng glanced at her, then quickly ran towards the front of building one, limping.
At that moment,
The entrance to the beer factory residential complex was already crowded with onlookers.
There were workers just returning from work, passersby, and many familiar faces to Zhao Qingfeng.
The funeral music had reached the entrance.
Pushing through the crowd, Zhao Qingfeng saw a band of more than ten people playing suona and drums under the dim streetlights, with two people carrying an eye-catching, large wreath at the end.
“Feng Hongmei!”
“You shameless woman, come down here!”
“You unfilial daughter-in-law, you drove your husband to his death, we’re going to make you kneel down and apologize in front of everyone today!”
Three women led the group into the complex, gesturing for the funeral music to stop temporarily. They then ordered the wreath to be displayed to everyone, before looking up at the seventh-floor window of building two, where Feng Hongmei was silently wiping her tears, and started hurling insults at her.
