Sheng Yongkang blocked her path. “Where we’re going has nothing to do with you!”
He had figured it out—Wang Xiaofang liked that Li Jiànshè too and had caused trouble for his little sister before.
Anyone his sister hated, he hated too.
Wang Xiaofang stared at Sheng Yongkang, dumbfounded.
Who was this?
He was way too good-looking! A hundred times better than Li Jiànshè!
Sheng Chunxiang glanced back. “Brother, ignore her. Let’s go.”
Sheng Yongkang clenched his fists at Wang Xiaofang. If she dared to mess with his sister, he wouldn’t let her off.
It took Wang Xiaofang a while to snap out of it—Sheng Chunxiang was so lucky to have such a handsome big brother.
“I know where you’re going! Wait for me!” Wang Xiaofang hurried after them.
“You’re Sheng Chunxiang? Old Sheng’s biological granddaughter?” Director Wang adjusted his glasses and examined her documents.
Sheng Chunxiang: “Director, yes, I am Sheng Chunxiang. This is my husband, Pei Qingyuan. His father is Director Pei Guokang of the Towel Factory.”
Hearing Pei Qingyuan’s name, Director Wang immediately looked up.
“Pei Qingyuan? You… you two got married?!” Director Wang was stunned, but internally, he was celebrating.
He had to share this great news!
Families with daughters could relax now—this little rascal was married!
Pei Qingyuan: “Director Wang, I knew you had sharp eyes and a good memory. I got married, so you owe me a 20-yuan red envelope!”
“This is my wife, isn’t she beautiful? And she’s got a job—Old Sheng’s job!”
Sheng Chunxiang: “???”
A 20-yuan red envelope?!
“Director Wang, you’re practically family to us! No matter how much you give, it’s the thought that counts.” Sheng Chunxiang smiled sweetly.
Outside the door, Sheng Yongkang rubbed his ears. His sister and her husband were really thick-skinned.
Wang Xiaofang stood there, completely dumbfounded.
Too shameles!.
“People can really be this thick-skinned, huh!”
Sheng Chunxiang had only been married to Pei Qingyuan for a day, and she had already been dragged into this mess.
Director Wang, who had been mentally celebrating, suddenly had his excitement doused like a bucket of cold water.
Sure enough, fish seek fish, shrimp seek shrimp, and a turtle finds its perfect match—those two were truly made for each other!
And a 20-yuan red envelope? Why don’t they just go rob someone instead?
“Ahem… about Old Sheng’s job arrangement…”
Director Wang quickly changed the subject, and in less than half an hour, the job had been handed over to Sheng Yongkang.
He could start work officially the next day.
As they left the office, Sheng Chunxiang stuffed a handful of wedding candies into Director Wang’s hands. “Grandpa Wang, you’ve worked hard! We’re hosting a wedding banquet in a few days—you must come!”
Pei Qingyuan added, “I know where Director Wang lives. I’ll personally pick you up!”
Director Wang was so furious that he almost lost his balance and nearly fell over.
There was no getting out of this red envelope situation. In a hurry, he dug into his pocket, pulled out a 10-yuan bill, and stuffed it into Pei Qingyuan’s hand. “Xiao Yuan, this is just a little something from me. Don’t mind it—go get yourself a good meal.”
He had thought that helping them settle things would exempt him from giving a red envelope, but that clearly wasn’t happening.
Pei Qingyuan handed the money to Sheng Chunxiang, who smiled. “Grandpa Wang, you’re too kind. We’ll take our leave now. My big brother will be working here, so I’ll have to trouble you to look after him.”
Director Wang maintained a polite smile, but internally, he was rolling his eyes.
Good grief!
They had latched onto him like a stubborn piece of gum.
Sheng Yongkang and Wang Xiaofang had witnessed everything and both gave a thumbs-up.
Impressive!
Such a masterful display of shamelessness—they had to learn from it.
As they left the steel factory, they ran into Wang Xiaofang’s two older brothers.
“Sheng Chunxiang? What are you doing here?” The Wang brothers recognized her, thanks to their dear little sister.
Wang Xiaofang quickly explained, “Big Brother, Second Brother, Chunxiang married Pei Qingyuan. They’re here to transfer a job to Sheng Yongkang—her biological big brother.”
“Big Brother, Second Brother, you’ll be working together from now on, so you have to take good care of him.”
Sheng Chunxiang: ????
Pei Qingyuan: ????
Sheng Yongkang: !!!!
Everyone was full of question marks—what was Wang Xiaofang up to?
Under their puzzled gazes, Wang Xiaofang boldly declared, “Sheng Chunxiang doesn’t want Li Jiannian anymore, and neither do I. I like Sheng Yongkang, and I’m going to marry him! So, you two better take care of him—no bullying, and don’t let anyone else bully him either!”
What?!
Sheng Chunxiang felt like thunder had struck right over her head.
Had even Wang Xiaofang, this cannon fodder character, awakened?!
The two Wang brothers were equally shocked. Their little sister didn’t like Li Jiannian anymore?
That was great news!
But… now she liked Sheng Chunxiang’s big brother? Was that good or bad?
Pei Qingyuan stepped up. “Ahem… don’t underestimate him. My brother-in-law is good-looking and highly skilled. If you two stick with him, I guarantee you’ll live well—eating and drinking to your heart’s content. Got it?”
He knew these two. In the past life, they had followed Li Jiannian, which led to one losing his job and the other losing his life.
In the end, their jobs had gone to Qian Meili’s brothers instead.
If they switched sides this time, maybe they’d have a better fate.
“We’ll see.”
“He’d better be capable.”
Despite their words, the two brothers were already feeling nervous. They couldn’t outmatch Pei Qingyuan—his tricks were endless. They exchanged glances with Sheng Yongkang before turning to leave.
Wang Xiaofang quickly chased after them. She needed a clear answer!
Meanwhile, Sheng Chunxiang and the others went straight to the community office to register Sheng Yongkang’s household registration.
—
At the People’s Hospital
Li Jiannian and Qian Meili had just been discharged.
At the entrance, Li Jiannian’s frown was so deep it could crush a fly.
Qian Meili noticed his sour mood and deliberately comforted him. “Jiannian, don’t be angry. Maybe Chunxiang hasn’t returned yet. Didn’t she go back to the countryside?”
Li Jiannian snorted. “Hmph! She’d better be!”
In the past, whenever he had even the slightest headache or fever, she’d be more anxious than his own mother—circling him like a little lapdog.
Now, after she had beaten him and landed him in the hospital, she hadn’t even brought him good food or drinks.
Now that he was discharged, he wanted to see how long she could keep up this act before coming back to beg him.
Just as Qian Meili was about to speak, her stomach rumbled loudly. Embarrassed, she quickly lowered her head.
Had Sheng Chunxiang, that little lapdog, really changed? In the past, whenever something like this happened, she would have already prepared a feast of fish and meat, pleading with Li Jiannian to eat, and then he would share half with her.
But during their hospital stay, if it weren’t for her family hoping to marry her off for a high dowry, she wouldn’t have even gotten an egg to eat.
Li Jiannian was also hungry. He wanted to buy her some meat buns, but he had no money or food stamps!
“Let’s go home for dinner.”
It was all Sheng Chunxiang’s fault. If she hadn’t lost her mind and hit him, they wouldn’t have been hospitalized.
If she hadn’t played this hard-to-get game, he wouldn’t be broke and out of food stamps!
Qian Meili nodded without another word, though she was secretly unhappy.
Li Jiannian clearly had three yuan on him, but he refused to spend it on her. Even after leaving the hospital, he still wouldn’t take it out to buy her a meal.
Yet, back when he was spending Sheng Chunxiang’s money, he had been so generous.
But Qian Meili wasn’t as foolish as Sheng Chunxiang. She wouldn’t be deceived by a few sweet words from a man.
If there were no tangible benefits, she wouldn’t agree to anything.
Still, she figured that Sheng Chunxiang wouldn’t give up on Li Jiannian so easily. She’d keep serving him like a doormat.
And that was fine.
After all, once Qian Meili got married, her whole family would need someone to take care of them.
When she had a child, she’d need someone to look after it too.
Hiring a maid was unrealistic and wouldn’t look good.
But if Sheng Chunxiang volunteered to “help,” well, that was a different story.
In the Courtyard.
Sheng Family.
Sheng Yongkang was the first to return home, bringing good news—both his job and household registration were taken care of.
Min Yuanyang secretly wiped away a tear.
She still felt indebted to Xiangxiang. That job should have been hers.
Back in the village, she had heard of families fighting tooth and nail for a job, yet Xiangbao had simply handed it over to her brother without hesitation.
Sheng Fugui felt deeply guilty. He owed Xiangxiang, and in the future, he would have to repay her double.
Just then, Sheng Chunxiang and Pei Qingyuan arrived, carrying large bags filled with grain, meat, vegetables, eggs, and malted milk.
“Oh dear, Qingyuan, you just got married—you can’t be so extravagant!”
“Buying so much, how much did that cost?”
“Is this all for honoring your parents? Looks like marriage has made you more sensible!”
…
The people in the courtyard were envious, but they could only watch. They didn’t even dare to try and take advantage of the situation.
Pei Qingyuan was a known troublemaker—if you provoked him, you’d lose not only your dignity but also your pride.
And now, he had married a strong-willed wife who didn’t care for reasoning—she would simply hit first!
Hadn’t they seen what happened? Li Jianguo and Qian Meili were still in the hospital!
Pei Qingyuan grinned. “Today is my wife’s return visit to her parents’ home. The gifts can’t be shabby, or people might think my father and stepmother mistreated me.”
“I can’t do anything that would disgrace my father. After all, I’m known far and wide as a filial son.”
