Lingering Game
Lingering Game chapter 12

Since he had no mood for revision anyway, Jing Tian simply packed up his things and climbed onto his bed, focusing on chatting with Yang Yue.

He also lived in the dormitory during high school, but unfortunately, his relationship with his then roommates was average, and they didn’t get along well. Although he observed from the sidelines, he had never personally participated in such activities before.

This made it quite interesting for him.

He had many questions in his mind.

Some subconscious resistance wanted to avoid them, some he couldn’t articulate because he wasn’t familiar enough with Yang Yue, and some because there were too many things occupying his mind for the past few days.

Now, with the lights off, lying in bed, with his eyes half-closed, he could ask them all.

“You mentioned last time that I used to curse Zheng Xunqian behind his back. Do you know why?”

Yang Yue turned around, making rustling noises. “You not only cursed him behind his back, but also openly showed hostility towards him.”

Jing Tian, wrapped in his blanket, was secretly surprised.

Openly showing hostility, that was quite a high-level skill, and it was even done in front of Zheng Xunqian. He really was quite a daring individual back then.

“What did I say?” he asked, feeling nervous yet eager.

“They were all messy and unproductive. How could I remember?” Yang Yue said, laughing. “There was one time that was particularly funny! During a physics experiment class, the teacher arranged everyone to be randomly paired up to check each other’s experiment results and score them according to the standards. You and he were in the same group.”

Jing Tian’s heart skipped a beat.

The pile of messy experimental equipment from a few days ago had already given him a full understanding of his level and attitude over the past two and a half years.

But Zheng Xunqian was so nice to him. Seeing him mess up so badly, he would definitely help, right?

Wrapped in his blanket, Jing Tian blushed secretly at his own speculation.

“Normally, in such peer evaluations, everyone would give high scores to each other, but that Zheng Xunqian, impartially, gave you an unqualified grade.”

“…It was indeed quite frustrating,” Yang Yue said. “You were so angry that you also gave him an unqualified grade. When the teacher saw it, he dragged you to the front of the class and asked you to explain why Zheng Xunqian was unqualified.”

Jing Tian lay on the bed, his face redder, his toes scratching the sheets vigorously.

“Was it because of this incident that I targeted him?” he asked.

“Not really, you already didn’t like him before that. This should be considered the first time I saw you two confront each other face-to-face,” Yang Yue said. “Later, after class, you immediately went to him and expressed hostility.”

“What did I say?”

“Out of anger, you said something embarrassing, but I can’t remember the exact words… Anyway, it was something like feeling unworthy to grade a top student, and being placed in the same group as him was reaching for something unattainable…”

“…What was his reaction?”

“No reaction,” Yang Yue said, “He ignored you, treated you like air.”

It was too embarrassing, just like the standard villain character in a TV drama, the most basic kind of henchman, appearing at the beginning of the plot and paying the price for his actions halfway through the episode.

Jing Tian reached out, grabbed the pillows on both sides of his head, and covered his entire head with them, closing his eyes trying to escape reality.

No wonder Zheng Xunqian didn’t show any surprise when he saw that string of email subjects. It turned out that it was already common for him.

“The more I talk, the more incredible it seems,” Yang Yue moved again, “What exactly happened between you two later? How did you end up together?”

Jing Tian blinked in the darkness.

“Wait a minute,” Yang Yue thought of something and suddenly sat up, “He must have seen that thing on your butt by now!”

Jing Tian felt guilty, strictly speaking, that wasn’t his butt, it was just the junction between his waist and his butt.

“Has he?” Yang Yue asked.

“I…I don’t remember.”

Jing Tian said softly.

“He must have seen it,” Yang Yue lay back down, still laughing incessantly, “No, I have to tell him someday. That’s something only your boyfriend can see. After seeing it, he has to take responsibility for you.”

“Don’t!” Jing Tian let go of his hands, revealing his face, and shouted anxiously, “Please don’t say anything!”

But Yang Yue continued to laugh. “Then I’ll need some compensation.”

“…I’ll treat you to a meal.”

Jing Tian said.

Whether it was expressing gratitude or trying to buy someone off, he always had only one trick.

Fortunately, Yang Yue accepted readily. “Deal!”

Seeing that he was just joking with him, Jing Tian didn’t feel annoyed at all, just relieved.

He turned to the side, whispered a complaint, “He embarrassed me so much, how come you don’t hate him at all?”

“Come on, you embarrassed yourself,” Yang Yue said, “Everyone knows he’s weird, but you still clashed with him. There’s no comparison with the Chu guy.”

“Why do you keep saying he’s weird?”

“Isn’t the example just now weird enough? Let me give you another one.”

Jing Tian listened intently.

“He’s super antisocial, whether it’s in school or in all the collective activities organized by our class, he never participates,” Yang Yue said, “In freshman year, there was a competition, and each class sent representatives. He had good grades, so the class committee publicly begged him to participate during the class meeting, but he didn’t give them any face.”

“…Is that really considered weird?”

“Why not? There were only five girls in our class, and that year’s class committee was recognized as the most beautiful and elegant in the entire department. They even acted cute on the podium,” Yang Yue said, imitating, “‘Please, do us this favor, pretty please.’ It was really cute!”

“The whole class was cheering at the time, but he didn’t change his expression at all. He said he wasn’t interested and wouldn’t go, without any room for negotiation,” Yang Yue sighed. “If it weren’t for the teacher there, it wouldn’t have been surprising if someone punched him.”

Indeed, it was quite heartless.

Jing Tian now probably understood that he didn’t like girls.

But if he encountered the same situation, he would definitely agree on the spot; he couldn’t bring himself to refuse.

“So… what was my reaction at the time?” Jing Tian asked.

“You?” Yang Yue thought for a moment, then said, “You didn’t have much of a reaction… Oh! I remember now, you spent the whole class thinking about which color of hair dye to buy, constantly asking for my opinion!”

“You were pretty obedient back then,” Yang Yue said. “I suggested you try a lighter color, but you hesitated for a long time and didn’t dare to try it.”

Jing Tian touched his hair. “By the way… you said last time that you could help me dye it. I want to dye it back to black.”

Yang Yue was surprised. “You really want to go back to black? I thought you had accepted it already.”

Jing Tian shook his head. “It’s too conspicuous. I’m not used to it.”

Walking around campus, strangers always seemed to unconsciously focus more attention on him, making him uncomfortable.

“Is standing out really that bad?” Yang Yue said. “You used to say you enjoyed that feeling.”

Jing Tian was stunned.

It was unbelievable that those were words he had actually said.

“You definitely want to dye it back to black. I can help you anytime,” Yang Yue said, “…But your appearance definitely suits lighter hair colors better. You look very handsome as you are now.”

Jing Tian was easily swayed.

He had looked in the mirror, seen the photos, and knew that he looked much better now than three years ago.

“Think about it some more?” Yang Yue said.

After hesitating for a few seconds, Jing Tian nodded quietly.

They chatted too late into the night and almost overslept for their morning classes the next day.

Yang Yue’s attitude towards studying was not very serious either. Despite the alarm clock going off several times, he kept his eyes closed and covered his head, refusing to get out of bed.

After much hesitation, Jing Tian finally mustered the courage to lift his blanket.

This guy was always skipping classes, which wasn’t good. As a friend, he had an obligation to urge him on.

A healthy friendship involves mutual progress.

“I can’t believe there will be a day when you criticize me for not studying seriously,” Yang Yue said, letting Jing Tian pull him out of bed with his eyes closed, speaking with a lack of energy, “At least I’ve never failed a course.”

“And I won’t in the future either.”

Jing Tian said.

When the two arrived in the classroom, they were a bit late, and the seats at the front and back were already taken.

They found a random seat near the middle and the edge. Yang Yue barely sat down before he collapsed on the table, unconscious.

Jing Tian was also tired. After placing his books on the table, he exaggeratedly stretched.

When both of his arms reached their highest point, a familiar figure walked into the classroom.

It was Zheng Xunqian.

Jing Tian blinked twice, inexplicably nervous, and cautiously withdrew his arms, trying to reduce his presence.

But Zheng Xunqian didn’t walk straight to the corner seat as before after entering the classroom.

Instead, he slowed down after entering the classroom, silently scanning the seats from left to right.

Two seconds later, his gaze caught Jing Tian’s.

Since they made eye contact, he had to greet him.

Jing Tian placed his two hands obediently on his thighs, grinned awkwardly, and smiled politely.

Zheng Xunqian nodded slightly at him and then walked towards the direction where Jing Tian was sitting.

Jing Tian nervously watched as this person approached, and he sat down very naturally beside him.

Although Zheng Xunqian’s movement was not big, Yang Yue, who was only one person away from them, still noticed it vaguely and squinted his eyes slightly.

Originally just taking a casual glance, after seeing who it was, he immediately widened his eyes.

Jing Tian was extremely nervous, lowered his head, pretended to be reading a book, and didn’t dare to move.

Yang Yue’s gaze quickly shifted from Zheng Xunqian to Jing Tian’s face, and then back to Zheng Xunqian.

Zheng Xunqian didn’t greet Yang Yue, taking out his books and notes as if nothing had happened, arranging them properly before bowing his head to look at his phone.

The surroundings were quiet, with only Jing Tian’s heart beating rapidly.
