Chapter 41: The Mutant 2
Although she would never admit it, Jeanne d’Arc · Alter indeed mounted the wyvern with the thought of it being akin to a date, a trip taken alone with another.
Yet, things did not go as wished.
It was summer, and the scorching sun combined with the sand dust blowing from the south greatly affected their comfort. Moreover, they needed to reach the site as quickly as possible to detect any issues early.
In contrast, thanks to the Edenites’ efforts, the Mesopotamian plains had turned verdant. What was once a barren desert landscape had transformed into intermittent patches of light green, especially around settlements, with flora that made it hard to believe this was a tropical desert climate with scant rainfall.
Over ten major city-states and more than three hundred minor ones were scattered across, looking presentable thanks to a developed trade network and fair distribution. Additionally, the widespread cultivation of the Kabbalah tree fruit, high-yielding, fast-growing, easy to maintain, and nutritious, had boosted the population of Mesopotamia to levels beyond historical comparison.
Still, until the transformation was complete, Sumerians couldn’t fully escape hunger like the Edenites. Their bodies rejected fruits directly from the planet, limiting Kabala fruit intake for a while, meaning it only alleviated but didn’t replace grain. However, due to soil salinization and fertility improvements from Edenite expansion, even without agricultural innovation, wheat and barley yields were much higher than before.
Given such circumstances, it seemed only a few more strategic steps were needed to merge Sumerian civilization into Edenite civilization bloodlessly.
“Speaking of which, would the gods of Mesopotamia really just watch? If we’re inevitably heading for a conflict with them, even if we don’t want to declare war, we need to determine the right timing.”
Controlling the wyvern to slowly descend, Jeanne d’Arc · Alter mentioned to Adam as the dust finally lessened.
Having been a soldier and commander, she considered the possibility of war, whether she believed in peace or not, especially since she was rather pessimistic about this aspect.
After all, the Hundred Years’ War only transformed from a nobility game to a national conflict after her death.
Her current stance on gods was that of the nobility, further isolated from the masses.
Those beings were unlikely to happily see what they considered their property slip away.
“There are gods like Ereshkigal who truly stand with humanity, evidenced by centuries of internal strife. The divide between those who believe humanity’s welfare is paramount, regardless of faith, and those who want to maintain the status quo likely started when they surrendered to the comet soldiers.”
In Sumerian mythology, the Tablet of Destinies was a symbol of absolute power, allowing a sufficiently powerful king of gods to easily suppress the minority opposition.
Adam suspected, perhaps due to a shift in the world line, the legend of the Tablet being stolen by the bird Anzu only recently occurred, and thanks to the Edenites stabilizing the laws of the star, its loss didn’t impact the environment significantly.
Losing the Tablet, akin to a high command to the gods, was probably the most plausible reason for the division in heaven.
It would be best to confirm with Ereshkigal upon return.
Just as Adam thought this, Jeanne d’Arc · Alter, sensing his thoughts, suddenly accelerated and changed the wyvern’s trajectory, causing an unprepared Adam to nearly fall and eat a mouthful of sand.
“In the end, they’re probably all beautiful goddesses.”
“I think you’re mixing in clear personal bias. The list we planned includes at least Enlil’s son Ninurta and Enki, the god of water and civilization.”
Both mentioned were related to the Sumerian Great Flood.
When Enlil released a flood to control human numbers and because of their “noise”, it was Enki who defied the king of gods to warn humanity, and when Enlil discovered survivors and was enraged, it was his son Ninurta who couldn’t stand it anymore, pointed out Enlil’s mistake from the start, and vigorously defended the survivors.
This is what Adam confirmed locally.
Once he’s prepared, he plans to contact those gods opposing the king of gods through Ereshkigal.
Edenites’ world doesn’t need gods, but “benign” planetary tendrils have their place.
“You didn’t show me your list.”
“…I’ll list it out when we return. Let’s focus on the Persian Gulf for now, like why this body of water turned this color.”
Adam squinted as he jumped from the wyvern to the ground.
The blinding sunlight and blowing sand concealed the briny water ahead, known to Sumerians as the origin of life, Tiamat (the sea).
A thick scent of blood wafted towards them, followed by orange spreading rapidly on the sea surface towards the shore like poured paint.
The wyverns following them began to emit uneasy cries.
Suddenly, a wave rose, carrying the orange liquid ashore, where it solidified like glue, bubbling and eventually turning blood-red. Rising from it was a creature resembling a Tyrannosaurus rex.
The creature, nearly twenty meters tall, had tentacle-like claws, a malformed wing on the right side, a hard layer like that of an Ankylosaurus on the left, a bifurcated tail, and a head that seemed normal but had several areas of exposed bone without flesh.
Most unnaturally, it was wrapped in a barely visible black aura, a sensation Adam only felt in Ereshkigal’s underworld.
It looked at Adam and Jeanne d’Arc · Alter with murky eyes filled with malice not suited for a mere beast, a desire for revenge and destruction.
With a cry more of a wail than a roar, the bizarre dinosaur approached with heavy steps, opening its tooth-filled mouth to bite at Adam, the closest target.
But before he could retaliate, sharp-tipped chains shot from afar, piercing and killing the aberration.
