Walking to the northern end, Gu Xiaoxi finally saw the home she would share with Lu Jiansen.
It was an old courtyard with a weathered wooden house, its roof partially covered with new tiles—clearly recently repaired.
The courtyard wall had collapsed and was now fenced with bamboo, giving it a rather quaint appearance.
The yard wasn’t large. In one corner stood a well, next to a small pile of unused new tiles.
The house layout was simple: a central living room with a room on either side.
The living room held only a dining table and four stools. The left room had been converted into a kitchen, leaving the right side as hers and Lu Jiansen’s bedroom.
Inside the bedroom were an old-fashioned wardrobe, a kang bed, and a long table. Aside from being spotlessly clean, it was undeniably bare.
Lu Jiansen felt a pang of guilt seeing his young wife in such sparse conditions. Setting down their belongings, he said softly, “We’ll go buy whatever else is missing later.”
Gu Xiaoxi adjusted surprisingly well. “It’s fine. This is already good enough. Once we’ve arranged everything, it won’t feel so empty.”
With that, she nudged Lu Jiansen toward the kitchen. “You cook something for your comrades before they leave. I’ll handle the bedroom.”
Upon hearing this, Li Kun quickly waved his hands. “No need, sister-in-law! We’ll eat at the canteen and bring some food back for you.”
Gu Dachuan chimed in, “Right, let them fetch the food. Little sister, there are quilts in the wardrobe—we didn’t lay them out earlier to avoid dust.”
Gu Xiaoxi smiled. “Since we’ve just arrived, we should light the stove and cook something simple. Mom packed us some meat sauce, sausages, and fried fish. Don’t you want any?”
Gu Dachuan immediately changed his mind, grinning. “Then I’ll steam the rice.”
He missed home-cooked food far too much!
“I’ll do it,” Lu Jiansen said, wanting to prepare something nice for his wife. He unwrapped the package from his aunt and headed into the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Gu Xiaoxi took a broom from behind the door, closed it, and thoroughly cleaned the room using the waste disposal function.
Next, she pulled out two quilts from the wardrobe—one new, one old, both with military-green covers that felt surprisingly soft.
After some thought, she tossed both into the Old goods storage and replaced them with new ones.
From the new products display Hall, she also retrieved a brand-new cotton quilt, then selected a rose-red duvet cover embroidered with a double happiness symbol and red-checkered sheets to sew a fresh set.
Naturally, she prepared two new pillows as well.
She had brought curtains too, so she hung them up straight away.
The long table by the bed had mismatched wood tones that bothered her. After some hesitation, she threw it into the old goods storage.
To her surprise, the conversion made five new items appear in the new product display hall:
A pristine long table, an exquisitely embroidered folding screen, a vibrant emerald bracelet, a pair of matching jade earrings, and a jade hairpin of the same hue.
Gu Xiaoxi was stunned.
Had these been hidden inside the table all along?
She’d checked the drawers earlier—they were empty!
Where had they been concealed? Inside the table legs?
And what about the folding screen? How had that gotten there?
Baffled, she retrieved the long table from the display and moved it beside the wardrobe.
To keep the new table from standing out too much, she cut a piece of fabric matching the curtains and draped it over the surface.
Eyeing the old wardrobe, she gritted her teeth and tossed it into the old goods storage as well.
This time, only a new wardrobe appeared in the display.
Gu Xiaoxi concluded that the jewelry must have been hidden somewhere in the table’s structure.
In these turbulent times, families owning such items were often targeted, and furniture was a common hiding spot.
After a moment of reflection, she unpacked her clothes and neatly arranged them in the wardrobe, then folded Lu Jiansen’s few outfits and placed them beside hers.
Just then, Lu Jiansen pushed the door open.
Taking in the transformed room, warmth flickered in his eyes. Seeing their clothes nestled together, a quiet sweetness bloomed in his chest.
He stepped forward and murmured, “Let’s eat.”
His voice was slightly hoarse yet tender. Gu Xiaoxi couldn’t help glancing up at him.
Meeting her clear gaze, Lu Jiansen ruffled her hair. “From now on, leave tasks like hanging curtains, changing bulbs, and heavy chores for me, understand?”
Gu Xiaoxi blinked slowly, her lips curving. “Then next time, I’ll save them all for you.”
“Good.” His reply was earnest and effortless.
Standing outside eavesdropping, Gu Dachuan felt quite pleased.
Heavy work? Let the King of Hell handle it!
Li Kun stifled a laugh nearby. Never had he imagined their usually icy battalion commander—nicknamed “King of Hell”—could be so gentle with his young wife.
Was this the legendary “even heroes falter before beauty”?
As the thought crossed his mind, his commander emerged.
Li Kun promptly averted his eyes and snapped to attention.
