To her surprise, Luo Jinyu pondered briefly, then pointed to a specific spot among the flowers and branches, saying, “Mom, your arrangements are always lovely. It’s just that today, the vase seems a little narrow. If you remove this one branch, wouldn’t the composition have a more elegant sense of negative space?”
Mei Wan shifted back slightly, seemingly reconsidering the overall effect. Luo Jinyu withdrew her hand with a smile and added, “Mom, I’m just speaking offhand. You know I’ve never been good at these things.”
Yet, Mei Wan reached out and removed the branch Luo Jinyu had pointed to, then took a step back to observe again. She nodded in approval and said, “It does look better. Jinyu, you have a good eye!”
Luo Jinyu smiled gently and shook her head. “Not at all. I’ve just watched you arrange flowers so many times that, over time, I’ve picked up a little bit of understanding.”
Hearing this, Mei Wan’s smile grew even brighter.
Just then, Nanny Zhang arrived carrying a tray with a bowl of silky chicken and mushroom porridge, along with a few plates of refreshing side dishes. Mei Wan urged, “Eat while it’s hot, or your stomach will hurt again later.”
Luo Jinyu responded with a warm smile, thanking Nanny Zhang.
Nanny Zhang gave her a slightly surprised look, wiped her hands on her apron, and smiled somewhat sheepishly. After all, this “Madam” was always gentle and obedient in front of the Jing family’s elders, but toward the servants, she had never been particularly kind.
Luo Jinyu lowered her head and took small sips of porridge. Meanwhile, Jing Jiayi staggered over, struggling to carry a metal remote-controlled airplane that was even bigger than his head. The toy looked quite heavy, but he was overjoyed as he excitedly told Luo Jinyu, “Mommy, look! Daddy gave me this airplane! Daddy said it can really fly up into the sky!”
Seeing the gleaming metal propeller on top of the aircraft, Luo Jinyu immediately put down her bowl and carefully took the toy from him. In a gentle yet firm voice, loud enough for everyone to hear, she said, “Be careful. Let Mommy put this toy away for now, okay? You’re still too young to play with it—it could be dangerous. Look, the propeller blades are made of metal. What if you get hurt?”
“Yangyang” was Jing Jiayi’s nickname. When he was born, Mei Wan had consulted a master, who determined that his birth chart lacked water, so she gave him this name to compensate for the missing element.
Hearing Luo Jinyu’s words, Jing Chongshan set down his newspaper, picked up the toy’s packaging box, and flipped it over to read the English instructions on the back. After a quick glance, he frowned and tossed the box toward Jing Sihan, reprimanding him, “Suitable for children aged 8 and above. Did you not bother reading the instructions before buying it? Couldn’t you at least ask the salesperson?”
Jing Sihan couldn’t exactly admit that he had only given a last-minute order to his assistant to buy the toy yesterday. He had been in a hurry for a meeting at the time and hadn’t specified the child’s age. Later, when he saw the toy in his office, he thought it looked high-end and didn’t even consider whether it was appropriate—he just brought it home.
Luo Jinyu raised an eyebrow and glanced at Jing Sihan, a fleeting look of provocation flashing in her eyes. She quickly concealed it and placed the airplane aside before saying, “Dad, don’t be too hard on Sihan. He’s always so busy with work that he doesn’t even have time to come home for meals. It’s only natural that sometimes he might overlook things when it comes to Yangyang.”
Jing Sihan frowned. Is this woman an idiot? Saying something like that now is just adding fuel to the fire!
Sure enough, Jing Chongshan’s eyes widened as he scolded, “Don’t defend him! The company has been running smoothly for years—how busy can he possibly be? Back when I was starting this company from scratch, I still made time to be with his mother and him. But now that it’s his turn, he suddenly can’t manage it? I think he’s just cold-hearted, never caring about anyone! I don’t know when he became like this!”
Luo Jinyu lowered her eyes in a seemingly obedient manner, hiding the amusement within them. She pulled Jing Jiayi into her arms and whispered to him, “It’s okay. You can play with this toy when you’re a little older. Later, Mommy will take you to the mall to pick out another one, okay?”
Hearing this, Jing Chongshan went off on another round of scolding, berating Jing Sihan for a good while before ordering him to bring back a more suitable toy next week.
Out of the corner of her eye, Luo Jinyu caught a glimpse of Jing Sihan’s sullen expression and nearly burst out laughing. Sorry, Mr. Jing, but if there’s one thing this fairy doesn’t do, it’s suffer losses!
