Chapter 184
Wang Min’er suddenly cried out in pain, causing the two nannies holding her arms to immediately let go and step back slightly. They weren’t about to take any chances. It might be a different story if she weren’t pregnant, but the child she was carrying was the Tang family’s bloodline. If anything happened, how could they bear the blame?
Nanny Tang, however, didn’t see it that way. She thought Wang Min’er was faking the pain to avoid returning to the Dongshan manor.
If she didn’t want to go back to the manor, where did she intend to go? Could it be that she wanted to move openly into the Tang family’s main residence?
Nanny Tang’s face darkened, and she was about to make a sarcastic remark when she saw Wang Min’er’s pale face. Clutching her belly, she suddenly went limp as if about to collapse to the ground, startling Tang Nanny.
Wang Yuan’er quickly rushed forward to catch her and called Madam Zhang over to help. Wang Min’er was no longer the slender girl she used to be—her body had rounded out, and she was heavily pregnant. Her weight was too much for Wang Yuan’er to support alone.
“Min’er, what’s wrong?” Madam Zhang finally snapped out of her shock and hurried over to hold her.
Wang Min’er’s forehead was covered in sweat, and her face was pale. Madam Zhang carefully checked the back of her skirt and pant legs. Thankfully, there was no sign of blood, but she didn’t dare take any risks. Regardless of whether Wang Min’er’s pain was real or not, her current condition looked bad enough that she needed to lie down and rest.
“Second Aunt, let’s take her to bed first,” Wang Yuan’er decided decisively.
“Nanny Tang, should we call for a doctor to take a look?” Wang Yuan’er turned to Nanny Tang and added, “She was fine just now, but after moving…” She didn’t finish her sentence, but her gaze shifted toward the two stout nannies.
The two nannies were startled and quickly waved their hands. “This has nothing to do with us! We didn’t touch her at all.”
Nanny Tang furrowed her brows. Seeing that Wang Min’er’s complexion indeed looked terrible, she felt a pang of unease. She left the two nannies to keep watch over Wang Min’er and quickly returned to the Tang family to report the situation.
The Tang household was full of joy and festivity. Old Madam Tang, dressed in new clothes, warmly greeted her old friends and the ladies of the house with a beaming smile. In the midst of their conversation, her sharp eyes caught a glimpse of Nanny Tang lingering outside. With a laugh, she said, “Ah, as one gets older, even the back and kidneys don’t work as they used to. Please continue enjoying the wine—I’ll be back shortly.”
Old Madam Tang went to the private room in her quarters. After a maid helped her freshen up, she turned her attention to Nanny Tang.
“Is everything taken care of?” she asked, taking the tea handed to her by a maid and sipping it. “Has she been sent off? No commotion caused, I assume?”
Nanny Tang, however, looked troubled. She stepped forward and said, “Not yet, Old Madam. There’s… a problem on that side.” She proceeded to explain Wang Min’er’s sudden condition.
Hearing this, the teacup in the Old Madam’s hand trembled slightly. She looked up and asked, “Has a doctor been called?”
“Not yet. I’ve come to seek your instructions,” Nanny Tang replied, looking at her.
“What’s there to seek permission for? Quickly get a doctor to examine her!” Old Madam Tang slammed the lid of her teacup down heavily. Suddenly, something occurred to her, and she turned to Nanny Tang, saying, “Wang is a lowly thing, but what’s in her belly is Tang family blood—Ping’er’s first child.”
This made it clear—no matter what Wang Min’er herself was, the child she was carrying was Tang family blood and must not be lost.
Nanny Tang’s heart tightened. She immediately lowered her head and said, “I’ll get a doctor immediately.”
“Wait. Take our family doctor over—don’t let him speak carelessly,” Old Madam Tang said while rubbing her temples. “And make sure no one in the West Wing catches wind of this. Once she’s been examined, you know what to do, depending on the situation.”
Nanny Tang obediently acknowledged the instructions and quickly took people back to the Wang household.
Old Madam Tang was visibly displeased as she slammed the teacup heavily onto the table. “Not a single one of them is worry-free.”
On this auspicious day, she had hoped to enjoy a proper cup of tea served by her new granddaughter-in-law. But Wang, that troublemaker, dared to sneak back on her own. Hmph, some people live comfortably for a while and forget their place!
When Nanny Tang arrived at the Wang household with the doctor, Wang Min’er’s complexion had already improved considerably. However, remembering the Old Madam’s instructions, Nanny Tang didn’t dare take things lightly and had the doctor step forward to examine her.
The doctor, being one of the Tang family’s retained physicians, had previously checked Wang Min’er’s pulse and was aware of her situation. But now, with the Third Young Master’s legitimate wife officially entering the household and this incident erupting on the same day, his forehead was covered in sweat. Working for a prominent household came with challenges—knowing what to say and withhold was crucial.
After carefully checking Wang Min’er’s pulse, the doctor withdrew his fingers and said, “There’s no major issue. She’s simply over-fatigued, has an excess of liver fire, and this has caused some fetal distress.”
“Doctor Chen, is my baby all right?” Wang Min’er asked anxiously, her pale face full of worry as she looked at him.
“Yes, Doctor, you must check carefully. This is the Tang family’s precious grandchild,” Madam Zhang added nervously. Wang Min’er’s earlier scare had truly frightened her.
“The fetus is fine. I’ll prescribe two doses of calming medicine. Brew and drink them, and make sure she rests well,” Doctor Chen reassured them.
Wang Min’er finally let out a sigh of relief. She glanced at Nanny Tang but quickly looked away when she saw Nanny Tang’s tightly pressed lips. Secretly, she felt pleased—surely, this meant they couldn’t send her away now.
Madam Zhang escorted the doctor out while Nanny Tang instructed one of the nannies to follow along. After all, the nanny had been sent to take care of Wang Min’er and couldn’t just stand idle.
Once the room quieted down, Nanny Tang said, “Since the doctor has suggested rest, Miss Wang can recover here at the Wang household for one night. Tomorrow, she will return to the Dongshan manor.”
Wang Min’er’s head shot up. “I-I’m in this condition, and I still have to return to the manor?”
Nanny Tang’s lips curled into a faintly cold smirk. “This is the Old Madam’s decision—return to the manor or take the medicine to terminate the pregnancy. The choice is yours.”
Wang Min’er wanted to argue further, but Wang Yuan’er tugged on her sleeve and said, “If that’s the case, let’s just return tomorrow.” She gave Wang Min’er a meaningful look, and only then did Wang Min’er reluctantly lower her head.
Nanny Tang observed this and thought to herself: Finally, someone with a bit of sense.
With the matter settled, Nanny Tang had no desire to stay longer. She left one nanny to attend to Wang Min’er and prepared to go.
“It’s just brewing some calming medicine—anyone can do that. Nanny Tang might as well take everyone back with her to avoid drawing attention,” Wang Yuan’er remarked, trying to send the remaining person away.
Leaving someone behind here serves two purposes: first, it draws attention; second, any matters within the household would undoubtedly be reported back to that nanny, making it hard to speak freely.
Nanny Tang gave her a deep look but said nothing, simply taking her people and leaving.
As soon as they left, Wang Min’er let out a long sigh of relief. “Finally, they’re gone. That old woman only acts so high and mighty because she’s the Old Madam’s most trusted aide. Hmph, waving a feather duster like it’s a command flag.”
“And you still have the nerve to say that? If you weren’t so thoughtless and reckless, would today’s fiasco have happened?” Grandma Wang, who had been suppressing her anger all this time, finally exploded at Wang Min’er’s words. Pointing at her, she said, “Because of you, our Wang family has lost all face and dignity at Changle River. People say we’re rude and disorganized, and it’s all because of you! And yet, you show no sign of remorse?”
Grandma Wang was furious—angry and disappointed. This granddaughter of hers had been spoiled, and despite already suffering significant setbacks, she hadn’t learned her lesson. If she continued like this, she was bound to face an even greater downfall in the future!
Wang Min’er was momentarily stunned by the scolding but muttered, “What did I do wrong? They treated me like a prisoner, watching my every move, and wouldn’t let me return. I just came back to see my family—how is that wrong?”
“You… you…” Grandma Wang was too angry to continue.
“You’re wrong! Your mistake is in acting recklessly. Did you hear what Nanny Tang said? The Tang family cast out those two servants attending to you because of your rashness. If something had happened to the child you’re carrying, their lives might have been at stake, too. And you still think you’ve done nothing wrong?” Wang Yuan’er, pulling Grandma Wang back, coldly stared at Wang Min’er and continued, “You’re also wrong for clinging to unrealistic fantasies. You knew today was Tang Xiuping’s wedding day, yet you still tried to intrude. You just wanted him to see you and to show off in front of Miss Rong—isn’t that wrong?”
Wang Min’er’s face flushed bright red. “I wasn’t—I didn’t…” she stammered, unable to come up with a rebuttal. Finally, she burst into tears and wailed, “The Tang family bullies me, and now you’re bullying me too! Are you even my family anymore? You’re all helping them bully me!”
Grandma Wang, watching her tantrum and tears, felt a deep sense of disappointment. She said, “You’re married now—you belong to someone else’s family. Your natal family can’t protect you much anymore. If you continue to act like this, your path will not be a long one. Think carefully about your actions. We can’t help you anymore.” Pulling Wang Yuan’er with her, she added, “Let’s go. This is the road she chose for herself. How she walks it is up to her. We can’t walk it for her.”
Seeing them leaving, Wang Min’er panicked, and her crying suddenly stopped. “Grandmother…” she called out.
But Grandma Wang didn’t look back, walking away without a word. At the door, Wang Yuan’er turned and said, “Miss Rong has already moved into the Tang family. If I were you, I’d avoid provoking her. Stay in the manor, rest quietly, and give birth to this child safely. At least you’d keep your life intact. Otherwise, if you face off against Miss Rong, you’ll have no chance of winning—only losing! Take care of yourself.”
Wang Min’er watched them disappear through the doorway, clutching the bedding tightly, her lips pursed. “I’m not wrong. What did I do wrong? I didn’t do anything wrong.”
Madam Zhang entered, carrying the medicine, and overheard her words. “Oh, my dear, don’t overthink things. Quickly drink your medicine!”
Meanwhile, in the Tang family’s bridal chamber, Miss Rong sat on the new bed, her brow furrowing as she listened to her trusted nanny’s report.
“One of the Old Madam’s nannies went out and came back, even bringing a doctor with her? Do you know where they went?” Miss Rong asked coldly.
“This isn’t clear. We’ve just arrived—it’s not appropriate to inquire about matters in the Old Madam’s courtyard,” the nanny replied with a troubled expression.
At that moment, a maid outside called out, “The Third Master has arrived!”
“Forget it. Put this matter aside for now—we’ll talk later!” Miss Rong waved her hand dismissively and turned to greet Tang Xiuping as he entered the bridal chamber. Seeing his bright and handsome face, her cheeks flushed slightly. “Husband.”
“Apologies for keeping my wife waiting,” Tang Xiuping said with a smile as he led her to sit on the wedding bed. Moments later, the red silk curtains swayed as the soft sounds of affection filled the air.
Meanwhile, back at the Wang household, Wang Min’er stared blankly at the canopy above her bed, tears streaming down her face.
