After everyone took the items from the warehouse, the entire warehouse was empty again.
This place was near the highway toll station in C City, and after a brief encounter, everyone was about to part ways.
Mu Enya reluctantly pulled Xu Duoduo aside, telling her to make sure to come and visit her once she returned to the base, “I live in Building B, it’s really close to your place.”
Xu Duoduo nodded. This was her first friend she made during the apocalypse, and she was quite happy about it. She even gave her a piece of chocolate.
Mu Enya was very pleased.
Not having anything to reciprocate, she gave the small zombie the amulet hanging around her neck.
Zhang Chi also called out for Mu Enya to get in the car, and she hurriedly rushed over.
Xu Duoduo didn’t have time to refuse.
She couldn’t take the amulet.
Zhao Gang shook hands with Qin Luo and the others, expressing his gratitude, “Thank you so much. If it weren’t for your rescue, our family of three might still be hiding in that service area.”
Moreover, that place had been visited by a mutated snake-man. If they had hesitated or not followed, they would have eventually encountered the mutated snake-man.
Even without the mutated snake-man, they couldn’t live in a service area forever.
Now that they were with the main group and starting to understand how the new world worked, Zhao Gang felt more at ease. “Once we settle in the survivor base in H City, we’ll definitely treat you to a meal. Please, don’t be polite!”
Liu Chunhui, with her young daughter in tow, also asked her daughter to thank Qin Luo and the others.
Qin Luo and the others assured her it was nothing. “If it weren’t for us, there would have been other rescue teams.”
The headquarters’ principle was to never give up on any human being.
Zhao Gang was moved by this principle and finally got in the car.
Qin Luo watched as vehicles drove off toward the highway toll station. They too had to start their mission.
Today, Wang Weihu was driving, Chen Xiaofei sat in the front passenger seat, while Qin Luo and Bai Shu were in the middle row. Xu Duoduo had returned to the spacious last row.
The car had been cleaned with a blood-stain cleaning solution provided by the base. The solution worked well, and after wiping, the car no longer had the heavy scent of blood.
“We’re about 40 minutes away from the business district. We can go directly there. Once we arrive, I’ll clear out the zombies, Lao Wang and Bai Shu will rescue the survivors, and Xiaofei, you’ll stay with Xu Duoduo. The two of you go and gather supplies nearby.”
Qin Luo quickly assigned tasks, and the trio of Wang Weihu agreed, while Xu Duoduo blew her whistle to acknowledge. Everyone smiled.
The modified off-road vehicle headed straight for the destination—Baoli Business District in C City.
The closer they got to the business district, the more zombies they encountered.
Bai Shu and Qin Luo took turns shooting through the sunroof, each shot exploding the head of a zombie.
Now, zombies moved more slowly during the day, and some even hid in shaded areas.
Both of them had sharp eyes, and no matter where the zombies tried to hide, they couldn’t escape their gaze.
Xu Duoduo sat in the back row, leaning against the window and watching the street outside. The once bustling city was now eerily quiet, occasionally interrupted by the howls of mutated dogs and zombies, but no one was active outdoors.
Her eyes were sharp enough to notice that the curtains on the second floor were subtly trembling. There seemed to be survivors hiding there, but they didn’t know who was outside, so they didn’t dare to make a move.
The constant sound of gunshots and small explosions echoed around them.
After circling for a while, they had eliminated about 90% of the zombies, until they reached the main entrance of the large shopping mall—Gate 1.
Wang Weihu parked at the entrance. Now, they had to split into three teams.
“I’m leaving now. Make sure your earpieces are on. We’ll stay in contact. Xu Duoduo, don’t run off. Xiaofei, stay with her,” Qin Luo gave his final instructions. After seeing Xiaofei give an okay signal, he led Wang Weihu and Bai Shu ahead. The trio split again into two groups—Qin Luo would go inside the mall to clear out zombies.
Wang Weihu and Bai Shu would rescue scattered survivors around the mall.
Although they had been injured yesterday, it was clear that ability users recovered quickly, and they were already able to move freely today. It was common for them to go on missions while still injured.
The four of them were too busy to pay attention to each other and each focused on their own tasks.
“Squad leader, let’s go! C City is the food warehouse capital. There should be some food stores nearby. Let’s go raid them!”
Chen Xiaofei was excited, still holding his gun, with a childlike excitement on his face.
The little zombie nodded indifferently and headed straight for the nearest shop, which happened to be a store selling grains.
Most shops in this area sold food, but more goods were stored in the warehouses.
They needed to be patient and search the warehouses because that’s where the real treasure was.
Nearby was a high-rise residential area, so there were plenty of stores.
They could still gather quite a bit.
When Xu Duoduo entered the grain store, she saw a zombie stuck at the counter, likely a cashier, still wearing an apron, though it was now decayed beyond recognition.
She didn’t linger.
Chen Xiaofei shot it dead with one shot, putting the young zombie at rest.
The shop sold mainly coarse grains, probably a tourist spot, with local snacks on sale.
Xu Duoduo knew how to find good things quickly, stretching her small claw to take what she needed. She avoided open bags of food and only took the sealed ones, swiftly clearing the store.
Chen Xiaofei followed her, feeling inexplicably satisfied, just trailing behind her.
Xu Duoduo was efficient and quick in gathering items. Next, they entered a spicy hotpot shop, and Xu Duoduo went straight to the refrigerated section.
Most of the ingredients on display had already rotted, but the items in the freezers were still good, as there had been no power outage here.
She took three large freezers full of hotpot ingredients—various meatballs, beef, lamb, and seasoning packs.
There were no zombies in the shop. The doors to nearby stores were open, and the zombies had mostly fled outside, leaving only a few stuck inside.
Next, they went to an outdoor sports store, collecting tents, fishing gear, camping supplies, and backpacks.
Chen Xiaofei was very pleased with the haul, especially the large collection of outdoor clothing and shoes.
“Squad leader, how big is your space? Can we take all these men’s clothes? I really like them!!”
Chen Xiaofei loved wearing sports clothes, especially from a brand he liked but had never bought before.
Xu Duoduo nodded coolly and, with a quick touch, took everything.
Chen Xiaofei couldn’t help but smile, spinning around with his gun in hand. “Wow, this is amazing! Squad leader, your space is huge!”
Aside from the B City headquarters’ vast storage, he hadn’t heard of anyone else having such a large space. He had already filled three large warehouses with cans and still had room for more.
It was just too satisfying!
Next door to the outdoor sports store was a huge snack shop, one of the most popular ones in the past decade, with a massive selection of snacks.
This chain store had the most complete range, even dividing areas for childhood snacks, from spicy strips to dried fruits and jerky.
It was a bit dirty inside, with traces of the apocalypse’s onset.
Ignoring the bloodstains on the floor and some messes, about 80% of the goods were still good, so the contamination level wasn’t too high.
Chen Xiaofei and Xu Duoduo made the perfect pair, both fond of snacks. They dove into the snack shop like mice in a grain bin!
“Squad leader, quick! Come over here. I’ve gathered all the scattered snacks and put them on the shelves. You just have to take the shelves!”
Xu Duoduo heard the noise and hurried over to collect it. The shelves were filled with all kinds of soft candies that looked delicious. Her spatial storage grew a little more, though there were still plenty of empty slots remaining.
It would never be full—there was just too much space!
