The man introduced himself, “Madam, my name is Zhang Shengguo. I am Lu Heng’s comrade-in-arms. You can just call me Xiao Zhang.”
“Alright, alright.” Grandma Lu’s eyes reddened as she looked at the tall and upright Zhang Shengguo, thinking of her eldest grandson, who lay bedridden.
“Madam, this is our fault. We didn’t handle things properly and caused you to suffer,” Zhang Shengguo said apologetically.
Grandma Lu shook her head. “This has nothing to do with you. Ah Heng has explained everything, and we understand.”
The more she said this, the guiltier Zhang Shengguo felt.
“Where is Lu Heng? Can we see him?” Zhang Shengguo asked.
Grandma Lu nodded immediately and called out, “Nannan, take them to see Ah Heng!”
Lin Nannan nodded, glanced at the group, then got up and walked over. She called out, “Ah Heng, your comrades are here. Do you want to see them?”
Inside the room, Lu Heng had already heard the commotion. When he heard Lin Nannan’s voice, he couldn’t hide his excitement. “Nannan, bring them in!”
Hearing this, Lin Nannan immediately pushed open the door and led the group inside.
The room wasn’t very big, and with five grown men stepping in, it suddenly felt cramped.
But no one paid attention to that. The moment they saw Lu Heng lying on the bed, an indescribable feeling settled in their hearts.
Lin Nannan stood quietly in a corner, neither leaving nor speaking.
“Ah Heng…” Zhang Shengguo sat by the bed, looking at Lu Heng, struggling to find the right words.
They all knew that Lu Heng’s condition was irreversible. Any words of comfort would sound hollow and insincere, making it difficult to say anything at all.
One wrong word could cut even deeper.
“Commander Zhang, was the mission successful?” Lu Heng asked hopefully.
Zhang Shengguo fell silent for a moment before shaking his head. “I came this time because of that matter.”
Lu Heng’s face grew serious.
His heart skipped a beat. This couldn’t be good news.
“The mission wasn’t completed. Worse, news of your severe injuries and return got leaked. The one we captured, Han Li, had been hiding in your village all along. The schemes against you—he orchestrated them through his wife,” Zhang Shengguo said grimly.
“How could this be?” Lu Heng asked, puzzled. “How was my identity exposed?”
His identity was classified. Ordinary people wouldn’t know about it.
Even after the incident, they had come up with a proper cover story, one that should have erased any traces. Yet now, he was being told that his cover had been blown.
If that were the case, then his family was in danger.
“Han Li said someone contacted him, but he doesn’t know who,” Zhang Shengguo explained. Initially, he had thought it was a minor issue, but after arriving and learning about Han Li’s true identity, he had rushed over without delay.
Lu Heng took a deep breath, forcing himself to stay calm. “What was Han Li’s original plan?”
“He said someone wanted you dead. But Han Li didn’t want to ruin his current life, so he had He Ye frame you instead. It was the least conspicuous, yet most effective and safest method. But unexpectedly, the plan got disrupted, and he ended up exposed instead,” Zhang Shengguo said solemnly.
“So, my family is in danger now, isn’t it?”
The heavy atmosphere in the room was suddenly broken by Lin Nannan’s voice.
Everyone turned to look at her, including Lu Heng.
“Nannan…” He called her name with guilt in his voice.
He had already dragged her into this mess. Now that she was being targeted, her life was at risk. He didn’t want to burden her any further.
“This is…” Zhang Shengguo curiously observed Lin Nannan, noticing that although she stood quietly in the corner, seemingly inconspicuous, her composed demeanor among them made her impossible to overlook.
