The Vanguard team and several of their people hadn’t slept all night, they were so excited to see so many vegetables!
They were as nervous as if they were holding tens of millions of yuan in their hands! These were all fresh, non-toxic, and pollution-free vegetables.
Moreover, plants were almost impossible to grow here. If they didn’t have these vegetables, in a few months, even gnawing on tree bark would be impossible.
They would really be reduced to cannibalism. They had seen it happen in other bases.
But in their base, although there were several hundred people, such things had never happened. The main reason was that Su Yu’s management was very strict.
They were all holding on to what it meant to be human.
Li Yao notified everyone in the base early in the morning to start distributing food.
“It’s sweet potato! It’s sweet potato!”
The people who were already crowding in the queue became even more crowded when they saw the fresh sweet potatoes.
“It’s actually fresh sweet potato!”
Wang Qiang, seeing the queue getting more and more crowded, shouted loudly:
“Quiet everyone! Anyone who cuts in line! Get out of here!”
There were always one or two troublemakers who wanted to rush to the front to grab food. Zhang Liang kicked one of them. They had eaten their fill last night!
A man with almost no hair left was clutching his stomach, curled up on the ground.
“Anyone who cuts in line again will be kicked out of this line! Don’t even think about getting a bite of food from us!”
After speaking, Zhang Liang dragged the man curled up on the ground and threw him out.
The man grabbed Zhang Liang’s pant leg, begging:
“Please! Don’t make me leave! I was wrong, I won’t cut in line again.”
Because dozens of people at the back of the line didn’t get any of the steamed buns and baozi that were distributed before, the people who lined up at the back this time wanted to rush to the front.
“Get to the back of the line!”
The man still wanted to struggle a bit.
“No, can I go back to where I was just now?”
Zhang Liang insisted on his principles and said: “No! Either get out of the base! Or get to the very back!”
Many people in the base were losing their hair. Except for the few of them who were evolved, almost everyone else was suffering from malnutrition, and some young people were already bald.
“No! I won’t leave the base! I’ll go to the very back!”
The base had fresh vegetables, and they could see the future. Only a fool would leave.
With this troublemaker dealt with, the rest of the people in line behaved themselves.
They watched as sweet potatoes were distributed to the front of the line.
The first person to receive a sweet potato was a woman, barely 20 years old, with very little hair left, and so weak that she could be blown over by the wind.
Not only that, but the blood vessels in her skin were faintly turning black.
The children were given an extra tomato.
Su Yu thought for a moment, took out his Nokia phone, took a picture of the scene of distributing vegetables in the queue, and put it in the space.
When they built a base in the future, he had already thought of the name, it would be called Qing Tian Base (Sunny Day Base).
This time, Xia Qing sent a large amount of vegetables, so everyone got a share, and there was still a lot left over.
“Have a few people watch over the remaining food!”
“Okay!”
These were precious foods to prevent anyone from snatching them!
“In a few days, after we clean up that area, we’ll move over completely.”
That area was a wealthy district, with villas, which would be easier to build.
The main thing now was to let these people have enough to eat and regain some strength before they started building.
“If anyone doesn’t get enough food with their ration, they can exchange it for valuable items.”
The Vanguard team members said firmly:
“Understood, Brother Yu! We’d rather lose our lives than lose this food!”
Soon, the entire base was filled with the sounds of people making fires. Some people had pots and boiled sweet potatoes and eggplants to eat!
Those who didn’t have pots roasted sweet potatoes and eggplants. Suddenly, the base was filled with the rare smoke of cooking, which seemed like the hope of survival.
Young children, especially orphans, would be given special care.
“Brother, this is so delicious, even better than eating tree bark.” A child wearing shoes that were no longer the right size, revealing a blackened big toe, held a sweet potato and a tomato in her small hands. Her face was dirty, and she took a bite of the juicy tomato, staining her entire mouth red, and looked at Su Yu with a heartbreaking smile, her eyes shining.
Su Yu touched her little head. She was only four or five years old, and several strands of hair fell out with a gentle touch.
Children of this age had long lost their memories of what food used to be like. Since they could remember, they had been eating expired snacks, and even poisonous leaves.
On the other side, Li Yao was cooking sweet potatoes and potatoes for his wife. After they were cooked, he would mash them into a paste so that the child could eat them too.
“Wife, eat more!”
“No need, let’s save some of it.” Tian Rui said reluctantly.
“There’s a lot more! Brother Yu said that we won’t be short of food in the future! You can’t not believe Brother Yu! Only by eating more can your body recover.”
“Only when your body recovers can we live on. Our family of three will live well!”
Tian Rui’s eyes turned red. She looked at her hands, which used to be fair and smooth, but now lacked nutrition, and the blue veins in her skin were visible.
On this day of food distribution, everyone received food. Some were extremely excited, and some were weeping.
“Dad, wake up! There’s food! It’s sweet potato!”
The cry of a man in his twenties shook the heavens. He had gone to get food, but his father in his fifties had already passed away.
He opened his father’s hand and saw that he was still holding the steamed bun that had been distributed the day before yesterday. He had only taken one bite of the half bun.
His father still wanted to leave the rest for him, but his body couldn’t hold on and he passed away.
Some people were extremely excited, carefully sharing the food they received today, eating small pieces and savoring each bite. Others were already too hungry to bear it and swallowed it whole.
Su Yu looked at the man hugging his father’s corpse and crying hoarsely, and said, “Wang Qiang, announce that there will be food to receive for the next few days!”
“Okay!”
Such is the heart of a parent.
Some people were excited to hear that there would be more food to receive tomorrow, but they also knew that the days of being able to receive food every day wouldn’t last long. They needed to go out and find valuable things to exchange for it.
Some forward-thinking people had already started to team up. There was no hope in the past because there was no clean food. Even if they went out to find food, there was nothing edible.
Of course, some people also risked going to the urban areas, places surrounded by zombies, to find food, but most of it was expired or even contaminated with bacteria.
“Is anyone teaming up with me? Let’s go find valuable things first? Let’s go to places with fewer people, like cars on the highway.”
“That’s right! Let’s all go find some first! Brother Yu said that in a few days we’ll have to exchange valuable things, and there will definitely be a lot of people going to look for them then.”
