Chapter 19: A Week’s Worth of Food
“Is something blocking the door?” Wang Zhi asked.
“Mm.”
“Are you sure this is the right place?” Wang Zhi turned to ask the student.
“Yes! I’ve been here many times!” the male student said.
“Fatty, Old He, you two keep an eye on the hallway. If the zombies are attracted, deal with them.” Wang Zhi instructed.
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
Wang Zhi knocked a few times on the door to see if there were any survivors inside.
After a few knocks, there was no sound from within.
“Is anyone in there?” Wang Zhi called through the door crack.
“I’m here to save you. Please open the door,” Wang Zhi tried again.
“Save us? I think you’re here to steal food, right? I advise you to go somewhere else! We’ve taken this place, and there are zombies everywhere in this building. If you break down the door, they’ll be attracted to you, and you’ll be killed!” A man’s voice came from inside.
“I really am here to save you. There’s a shelter outside. If you cooperate, I’ll take you there,” Wang Zhi tried to persuade again.
“I still suggest you give up. Just hide away. Don’t act so holier-than-thou trying to steal from us in these times!” The voice inside replied again.
Seeing that the other party wasn’t moved at all, Wang Zhi decided to break the door down with force. He needed this food!
“Fatty, break the door down!” Wang Zhi said, turning back to the Fatty.
“No problem!”
“Old He, Ying, we’ll hold the line! Don’t let the zombies come over.”
After saying that, the three of them stood at the corner of the hallway, signaling Fatty to act. Fatty backed up a bit, took a short running start, and bang!
With a loud crash, the door flew open!
After the huge sound, the entire building started to tremble slightly, and zombies began charging down from upstairs towards Wang Zhi.
“They’re coming!” Wang Zhi warned.
It wasn’t long before a large group of zombies rushed down, and the narrow hallway was quickly filled with them.
“Hurry! Shoot!” Old He shouted.
Meanwhile, after breaking through the door, Fatty was confronted by three men wielding kitchen knives, trying to kill him and close the door again. As they charged, they realized Fatty had a gun!
No matter how fast the knives were, they couldn’t be faster than a bullet. The three men quickly lost their temper and were each kicked aside by Fatty.
After dealing with the men inside, Fatty turned and ran out to help Wang Zhi and the others with the zombies, while ordering the three male students to hide in the room.
Fatty was startled when he came out—the corridor was covered with a mass of corpses, and more zombies were still pushing their way through.
However, these bodies had blocked some of the zombies, tripping them up, which gave Wang Zhi’s group some breathing room. In the end, the corridor was full of zombie corpses—about twenty were killed.
“Finally done! Everyone okay?” Wang Zhi looked around at the group.
Seeing everyone shake their heads, Wang Zhi let out a sigh of relief and was ready to enter the room.
“Old He, please keep watch here,” Wang Zhi instructed Old He to stay at the door.
Inside the room, Wang Zhi looked at the three men on the floor, each clutching their arms in pain, groaning. The room was filled with the stench of bodily waste.
Wang Zhi glanced around the room. There were loaves of bread, spicy strips, instant noodles, hot dogs, and some drinks and bottled water.
The amount was enough to feed the 20 students for a week!
As for the behavior of the three men in the room, Wang Zhi could understand. In the apocalypse, there was nothing but endless darkness, selfishness, and suspicion!
“Take all of this food!” Wang Zhi instructed the three male students.
“Captain, what should we do with these three?” Fatty asked.
“Big brothers, please spare us! Didn’t you say you came to save us? Why are you going to deal with us now?” The three men begged, crying.
Wang Zhi looked at the three men begging and crying. He originally wanted to leave them to their own devices, letting them perish. But then he thought that bringing them back might bring rewards.
“You three come with us. Don’t make a sound on the way. If you do, my gun might make a sound,” Wang Zhi said, mimicking a gun with his hand.
“Thank you, big brothers! We won’t make a sound!”
The three students Wang Zhi brought out each took a large cardboard box. After packing all the food, the group exited the room. When the three men inside saw the corpses scattered across the hallway, they were immediately startled but thankfully didn’t scream.
As Wang Zhi was about to pass through the hallway, suddenly, a half-dead zombie grabbed at his leg.
“Watch out! Watch your step!” Wang Zhi shouted as he quickly shot the half-dead zombie in the head.
Just as he spoke, a cry of agony came from behind, “Ah!”
“Quick, everyone run out!” Wang Zhi ordered.
Once outside the building, Wang Zhi immediately asked, “Who was that?”
“It’s… it’s me. I was grabbed by a zombie’s hand,” said one of the male students.
Wang Zhi looked and saw a male student with a tear in his pants.
Wang Zhi walked over and squatted to look at the student’s leg. The wound was still bleeding black blood.
Standing up, he checked the others, “Anyone else hurt?”
Seeing no one else injured, Wang Zhi quietly spoke to Ying and the others, “That person has been infected. It’s only a matter of time before they mutate. We need to keep an eye on him. If things go wrong, we’ll end it immediately!”
After that, Wang Zhi began retracing their steps.
On the way back, the male student who had been scratched fell to the ground. The others rushed over to him, but the student was already delirious, his face turning purple, and black-red blood pouring from his mouth.
Wang Zhi calculated—it had only been less than half an hour since he was scratched. Half an hour was enough to kill him!
“Let him go quickly,” Wang Zhi turned to Ying and said.
Ying nodded and used her dagger to slice the student’s throat. The student, who had been struggling and convulsing, went still.
“Ah… Let’s go back,” Wang Zhi sighed and turned to leave.
This was probably the student’s karma. If he had opened the door earlier, the zombies wouldn’t have charged down, and he wouldn’t have been scratched or died.
Since Wang Zhi had killed most of the zombies on the way in, their return journey was much easier. Soon, they saw the students on the sports building rooftop waving at them.
When Wang Zhi reached the rooftop, the students stared in awe at the three boxes of food. They immediately treated Wang Zhi and his group like saviors and looked at them with admiration.
It was 10 AM now, and the trip had only taken half a morning, but they had secured a week’s worth of food. Things were going very smoothly for Wang Zhi and the others.
“Fatty, go distribute some of the food to them,” Wang Zhi said.
Wang Zhi took out his notebook and began recording the distribution situation, especially the characteristics of the zombies and the reactions of those who were bitten.
They were the first team to go out, and bringing back this information would definitely be valuable! But Wang Zhi wasn’t sure how the leader of the tower would handle it.
