Chapter 21: Evacuating the School

With a loud bang, the business vehicle shot forward several dozen meters in an instant!

The zombies behind them began chasing, but they couldn’t outrun four wheels with two legs. In just a moment, they had shaken off the zombies and even knocked a few out of the way as they went.

“Whoo, Wang Ge, if you had been any slower, we would have been buried by zombies!” Fatty gasped, speaking inside the vehicle.

“Fortune favors the brave. With this car, the road ahead will be much easier,” Wang Zhi said.

The business vehicle, apart from the passenger seat, had ten seats in the back. Wang Zhi and his three companions each took one seat, while the remaining twenty-four people had to squeeze into eight seats, and some even had to crouch.

Wang Zhi drove the car back to the sports building, and the sound of the engine attracted a few zombies. Although not many, it was enough to deal with the continuous swarm of zombies from the office building they had just passed.

The students were all anxiously watching Wang Zhi and his group from their desks. The recent explosions had made them uneasy.

Wang Zhi turned off the engine and got out of the car. He went up to the rooftop and saw that the students were visibly relieved when they saw that the car was ready, as it meant they could finally leave this place.

After distributing food to the group, Wang Zhi sat down and started eating.

He had just checked the fuel gauge, and there were still about 30 liters of fuel in the car. However, the evacuation point was 60 kilometers away in the outskirts of S City, so they would need to refuel along the way.

Wang Zhi took out the map and marked a location of a gas station in the suburbs. The city center, being densely populated, would definitely have more zombies.

After finishing their meal, Wang Zhi checked the remaining ammunition. After the recent battle, the four of them had only about 400 rounds left. As long as they avoided large-scale battles, this amount would be enough.

If all went well, they could reach the suburbs tomorrow, which should be safer with fewer zombies. This thought made Wang Zhi feel a bit more relaxed as he stood up and walked over to the students, quietly talking to them.

“Students, we’ll be leaving here tomorrow! There will definitely be dangers on the road, but everyone must stay united! Follow our instructions, and if everything goes well, get some rest. We’ll leave as soon as it’s light out.”

Meanwhile, at the Tower…

“Tower, the second team has taken on an outdoor mission,” Jie Xi reported, standing by.

“Which team?” Tower asked, looking up.

“It’s the Former Dynasty,” Jie Xi replied.

“Ah? That level three team?” Tower asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes,” Jie Xi answered.

“Hm, what about the first team? How are they doing?” Tower continued.

“According to the GPS data from their magnetic cards, the targets are all in motion, and they appear unharmed,” Jie Xi responded.

“Interesting. You can go now,” Tower said, lowering their head to continue reading the documents on the table.

Back at the School…

October 4, 2025, clear skies.

As the sky gradually lightened, Fatty and Lao He, who had kept watch through the night, woke everyone up. In this environment, no one really slept. Any slight movement would immediately make them alert.

Everyone grabbed their supplies and headed downstairs to the car. The business vehicle was about to carry Wang Zhi and his three companions along with nearly 30 people, far exceeding its normal capacity, but there was no choice. They stuffed as many people in as they could, whether sitting or crouching.

“Everyone, no matter what happens on the road, do not make a sound once you’re in the car. If anyone makes a noise, the person next to them should knock them unconscious or cover their mouth,” Wang Zhi instructed the group.

Wang Zhi took out his laptop, quickly unlocking the car with the secret key he had saved from yesterday.

“Done! Let’s go!” he said, and the group began their journey.

The vehicle’s engine roared, attracting zombies from the roadside. The zombies behind them relentlessly chased after the car. The students in the back, terrified, clung to each other, shivering. Jia Li tried to comfort them.

However, two legs could never outrun four wheels. The zombies eventually fell behind and were left in the dust.

Wang Zhi planned to use the school’s north gate as the exit and head north to reach the gas station in the suburbs, where there would be fewer zombies.

As they traveled, countless zombies charged at the vehicle. Sakura and Lao He leaned out of the windows, shooting zombies in front of them to prevent any from colliding with the car or getting caught under the wheels.

“Look! Someone on the rooftop is waving at us!” Fatty said, pointing to the building ahead.

Wang Zhi was surprised to see that there were survivors, but they were already too far along to stop and rescue them.

He turned his focus back to driving, careful not to crash into the zombies ahead.

They reached the north gate, and the front of the car was already battered from hitting zombies. They had also used up another 80 rounds of ammunition, leaving just over 320 rounds.

As they drove out of the school and onto the road, the number of zombies increased. There were also bloodstains and corpses scattered on the ground. Cars were abandoned in the middle of the street, and the whole area was eerily silent.

Wang Zhi noticed a convenience store nearby, with the shelves mostly untouched. He briefly considered stopping to grab some food, but then shook his head. Right now, their priority was to leave as quickly as possible.

“Not good! The road ahead is blocked by vehicles!” Lao He said, looking through binoculars.

“Ah? Should we take another route, Wang Ge?” Fatty asked, panicking.

“No! I’m not sure about the condition of another road. Lao He, take this. You’ll need to blow up the vehicles ahead!” Wang Zhi said, handing Lao He his last grenade.

He slammed the gas pedal, driving the car through the zombies.

In a short while, they reached the blocked area. When they were about 30 meters away, Lao He pulled the pin on the grenade and tossed it precisely under the vehicles.

Boom!

The explosion sent debris flying and cracked the windshield. The students in the back screamed in fright.

“Stay quiet!” Sakura shouted, trying to calm everyone down.

After the explosion, the surrounding zombies went into a frenzy, rushing towards the car. Some of the faster ones had already reached the vehicle, scratching and clawing at the windows.

“Quick, Wang Zhi, push through!” Lao He shouted, seeing that the road had cleared.

Wang Zhi knew what he had to do, but the shattered windshield made it difficult to see ahead.

“I can’t see!” he shouted.
