Chapter 43: Vending Machine

After crossing the bridge, Wang Zhi and his team reached the riverbank. Ahead was a park, and by passing through it, they could reach the outer wall of the research facility.

They were heading toward their planned destination.

“There’s a wooden house ahead, looks like a shop,” Wang Zhi said as he lowered his binoculars.

“We’re in luck!” Su Muying also looked through the binoculars.

When they reached the small wooden house, they found the door was still locked, suggesting no one had been there for a while. Through the window, they could see the shop inside was stocked with mostly drinks, bottled water, and some candy.

“We’ll grab these supplies when we come back,” Wang Zhi said, not planning to miss out on these resources.

After passing through a small grove, they finally reached the outer wall of the research facility. The wall was about three meters high. Now, Wang Zhi faced a new problem: the research facility was so large, where would they find the people they were looking for?

Wang Zhi took out a drone, intending to scout the area first.

The drone buzzed to life and flew into the facility.

Wang Zhi was currently positioned near the ecological station at the research facility’s wall. There was hardly anyone around. As the drone flew deeper, they saw the center of the facility—the science museum—where the population was most concentrated, but it was also infested with zombies. Hundreds of them were wandering the area aimlessly.

Behind the museum was the experimental base, which consisted of two three-story buildings. The buildings were connected by a skybridge, allowing people to move between them. Wang Zhi was certain that the people they were looking for must be in this experimental base.

While the drone was surveying the layout around the experimental base, Lao He, who was watching the screen, exclaimed in surprise, “Look! There’s someone in the skybridge on the 7th floor! A man and a woman. Could they be the ones we’re looking for?”

“They must have come out to look for food. We need to hurry over there,” Wang Zhi replied, retrieving the drone.

The team made their way around the outer edge of the research facility, heading toward the nearest spot to climb over the wall. Given their current capabilities, as long as they could grab onto something, they could use it to pull themselves up.

After climbing over the wall, they landed in a parking lot. The zombies had already noticed their presence and were heading toward them. Wang Zhi didn’t have time to sneak around and immediately picked up his rifle and started shooting.

The situation was urgent—since they had located the targets, they had to act quickly. If the targets were lost, the consequences would be dire.

Inside the building…

“Xiao Qi, should we go back?” Yang Liu’s assistant looked at the blood-covered hallway, her legs trembling in fear.

“Xiao Qi, just go back. It’s too dangerous outside,” said the assistant, urging him.

“Xiao Qi, don’t you see? We’ll die here anyway,” the assistant replied, unconvinced.

In that moment, a zombie appeared, and they were forced to deal with it.
