Chapter 48: Zombie Wolves
The moment Wang Zhi saw the wolves, his first reaction was that animals had been infected too!
“Not good! It’s the zombie wolves! Liuli, make sure you prioritize protecting yourself,” Wang Zhi quickly said, pulling Liuli back toward the group.
“Watch out, a pack of zombie wolves is heading this way! Yingjie, Lao He, please take care of Dr. Yang. The rest of you don’t need to worry about it,” Wang Zhi relayed over the earpiece, careful not to let the research staff hear these instructions.
Upon noticing the change in the group, the research staff panicked.
“Don’t run around. Stay by the fire,” Lao He stood up and shouted.
“We’ll shoot them while they haven’t exploded into a full charge,” Wang Zhi said through his earpiece.
Bang! Wang Zhi fired the first shot, and as soon as the sound rang out, the tense wolves suddenly charged at them.
Wang Zhi realized the zombies’ wolves were faster than he had anticipated—about 1.5 times faster than normal wolves. Bullets couldn’t keep up, and continuing to shoot was just a waste of ammo.
“They’re too fast! We can’t hit them!” Wang Zhi shouted, watching the wolves draw closer.
One of the wolves pounced directly in front of Wang Zhi.
Swish! A blade flashed in front of Wang Zhi—it was Liuli. She swiftly drew her blade and severed the wolf’s head as it lunged, the body still snapping its jaws even after being decapitated.
Realizing that bullets weren’t effective, Wang Zhi immediately drew his knife and started engaging in close combat with the zombie wolves.
Lao He and Su Mu Ying also fought hard with their knives, while also trying to protect Dr. Yang.
“Ah! No!” A woman screamed as she was knocked down by one of the wolves. Wang Zhi and the others couldn’t afford to check who it was or help her—they were too busy fighting the rapidly moving zombie wolves.
Liuli’s weapon, the Yeling Long, was the most effective—its sharp, long blade could instantly split the wolves in two. Wang Zhi’s knives, however, were far less effective. Only a strike to the wolf’s head could kill it. If it hit any other part of the body, the zombie wolf would still get up and keep attacking.
At that moment, a man couldn’t take it anymore and started running.
“Don’t run! Get back here!” Wang Zhi shouted at the man, but he didn’t listen. Less than 10 meters away, the man was knocked down by the wolves, and another blood-curdling scream filled the air.
The smell of blood attracted more zombie wolves, which turned and began feasting on the man’s body. Wang Zhi seized the opportunity and threw a grenade at the corpse.
Boom! The explosion shattered the silence of the night, killing several of the zombie wolves that had been drawn to the body.
This attack cost them three lives, but Wang Zhi secretly thanked the man for being used as bait. Otherwise, it would have been hard to gather so many wolves in one spot for a quick kill.
“Is everyone okay?” Wang Zhi checked on the rest of the group.
“Where did those crazy dogs come from? That was too intense. Almost got bitten—my survival gear got torn up, but thankfully the bulletproof vest held up,” Lao He said, still shaken, touching his waist where the vest had been damaged.
Hearing this, Wang Zhi rushed to Lao He’s side to inspect the wound. The survival gear had already been shredded, revealing the bulletproof vest underneath, which had a chunk bitten out of it. Lao He took off the vest, revealing a red mark on his waist.
“Phew! Good thing it didn’t break through. Otherwise, Lao He, you’d be done for,” Wang Zhi sighed in relief.
“Big Uncle He is too kind-hearted, trying to protect the others, and ended up ambushed by a wolf,” Su Mu Ying quipped sarcastically.
“As long as you’re okay, that’s what matters,” Wang Zhi said, patting Lao He on the arm.
“We need to move on. We can’t stay here any longer,” Wang Zhi said, looking at the corpses around them.
After packing up their supplies, the group moved forward. After the recent attack, everyone from the research staff and Hao Gong’s family were on edge. Even the slightest noise would make them jump and gather closer to Wang Zhi and the others.
After some time, Wang Zhi found a new place to rest, and they lit a new campfire.
“Everyone, the road ahead is dangerous. I expect you to follow orders. We will protect you while ensuring our own safety. If anyone disobeys like last time, the consequences will be dire,” Wang Zhi warned the group.
Everyone nodded, and this time, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind about obeying Wang Zhi’s orders. Otherwise, they’d face a horde of zombie wolves and a grenade.
The entire night passed without anyone falling asleep—no one dared to relax, fearing another sudden wave of zombies. Wang Zhi spent the night in the wild, with only a few straggling zombies wandering through. But aside from that, there were no further threats. As the first light of dawn began to appear, Wang Zhi and the others set out again.
Along the way, Wang Zhi occasionally used his binoculars to check the status of the zombie hordes on the road. However, the situation wasn’t looking good. Despite their progress, the road ahead was still filled with zombies. Wang Zhi realized that even the evacuation point was swarming with them.
After about eight hours of slow progress, they finally reached the area near the tunnel entrance. Wang Zhi used his binoculars to look at the entrance in the distance—true to his expectations, there were zombies around, and the closer they got to the tunnel, the more zombies they encountered!
“We’re here, but we need to cross the road,” Wang Zhi said, turning to the group.
“This is a deserted mountain; where’s the shelter?” someone asked.
“Isn’t the shelter down there? The tunnel entrance is right across the road,” Wang Zhi explained.
“Then what should we do? There are so many zombies on the road. Should we rush through?” Lao He asked.
Wang Zhi glanced at Lao He, then at the rest of the group. “We can make it, but they might not.”
“Why not lure them away, then rush across while they’re distracted?” Su Mu Ying suggested.
“Who’s going to be the bait? Them?” Lao He asked, glancing at the group behind them.
“We have the flare gun, right? We can use it to draw them out, then rush through. It’s safer that way,” Wang Zhi said, pulling the flare gun from his bag.
“The flare is useful, but when we get close, they’ll still prioritize attacking us,” Lao He pointed out.
Wang Zhi shrugged helplessly, “Well, it’s the best we can do. It’s better than rushing in directly. Besides, we only have around 300 rounds left. A direct confrontation is out of the question.”
