Chapter 69: Second Recruitment
In the research room, Director Yang Lifan was working with Dr. Chen and Dr. Yang Liu on an antibody foundation experiment. Jie Xi suddenly entered, dragging a massive snake head behind her, startling the three scientists in the middle of their experiment.
“What… what’s going on, Captain Jie Xi?” Director Yang Lifan asked.
“This is a mutated giant snake. I killed it and brought its head as a research specimen for you,” Jie Xi explained.
“Oh, thank you so much, Jie Xi! With this, we’ll definitely make breakthroughs in our research,” Dr. Chen expressed his gratitude as he approached.
“Mm, thank you for your hard work. The situation outside is getting worse, and we need to hurry. If there are any new findings, please contact me in time. I’ll take my leave now.” Jie Xi said, turning to leave.
After Jie Xi left, the three scientists stared at the giant snake head like it was a treasure. After taking necessary precautions, they immediately began dissecting it.
Meanwhile, Wang Zhi was lying on a hospital bed in the medical room, staring blankly at the overhead lights, thinking about everything that had happened outside. The mutated giant snake had disrupted their plans, and Wang Zhi began to realize that the enemies they faced were not just zombies.
Just as Wang Zhi was about to close his eyes and rest, the door to the room opened. Jie Xi entered. Wang Zhi sat up slightly and leaned against the pillow. Jie Xi had changed into a new set of armor, though her face showed signs of battle with some bruises.
“Captain Jie Xi,” Wang Zhi weakly greeted.
“How’s your injury?” she asked.
“It’s not serious, just a few broken ribs. I’ll recover after some rest.”
“I’ll apply for two months of recovery time for you from the tower. During this time, you should stay here and rest up.”
“Thank you, Captain Jie Xi. By the way… you didn’t get injured, right?”
“I’m fine. I just didn’t expect the mutated creatures to be so powerful.”
“Mm! I think after they mutate, they’ll develop intelligence.”
“You’re right. Actually, before you guys, we received news from another team. Two survivors said they encountered a four-meter-tall zombie that seemed to have intelligence.”
“Mutated zombies?!” Wang Zhi asked, disbelief in his voice.
“Not all mutated zombies grow in size. Some may have other traits. This is just my personal guess, and there’s no concrete evidence for it.”
“So, what should we do next?”
“As the number of teams going out decreases, the resources in the tower are also running low. Relying solely on photovoltaic power is no longer enough to keep the tower running, and food will become increasingly precious. The tower is planning to launch the second recruitment. Anyone who joins an outdoor team will become a citizen, while those who don’t will lose their citizenship and become refugees. This recruitment is open to everyone.”
Jie Xi continued, explaining the upcoming actions in the tower. Anyone who didn’t join an outdoor team would be downgraded to a refugee status.
Wang Zhi knew about the refugees. They only received enough food to barely survive and had to work ten hours a day. If they refused, they wouldn’t get anything, but those in outdoor teams, as citizens, had better conditions, even though they risked death in those teams.
“If even this doesn’t motivate anyone to join the outdoor teams, what should we do?” Wang Zhi asked.
“People are driven by greed. This situation won’t last long,” Jie Xi answered confidently.
“True enough,” Wang Zhi responded.
“Rest up. I’ll be leaving now.”
“Understood.”
After Jie Xi left, Wang Zhi’s stomach began to growl. He thought to himself that he couldn’t go hungry while injured. Pressing the button beside his bed, he called for a nurse.
After a while, a nurse entered.
“Excuse me, nurse. I’d like to order takeout…”
In the lobby on the first floor.
The team from the End of Days Eternity group returned after being outside for a month! More and more people gathered to watch, while the elevator kept transporting people up and down, ten at a time. After two hours, the elevator was still running. The guards, seeing the crowd growing, came to disperse the onlookers.
An hour later, the elevator finally stopped, and over a hundred people stood in the lobby, each with some supplies. This news quickly spread throughout the tower. After this trip, the End of Days Eternity team had made a huge profit.
The people from the End of Days Eternity were all dressed in cloaks with hoods, wearing gas masks, hiding their faces. The only visible feature was the leader, an old man with white hair and numerous gruesome scars on his face.
Meanwhile, after waking up from his nap, the group of fat guys had come to visit Wang Zhi.
“Oh no, Wang Zhi, how’s the injury?” the fat guy said as he entered, looking rather smug.
“Are you happy because I’m injured, Fatty?” Wang Zhi said, giving him a stern look.
“I’m not happy, I’m empathizing. You should try lying in bed for a while too.”
“Heh, I’m used to the training, and suddenly lying down feels uncomfortable all over,” Wang Zhi replied.
“If you can’t handle it, let him rest, Captain Wang,” the fat guy suggested.
“No, Captain Sophie said we need to keep him under observation for a week before letting him leave. He’ll have to stay here quietly,” Lao He rejected the suggestion.
“By the way, I’ve taken care of your task. The thirty-nine survivors and we managed to gather more supplies. In total, we now have 4,000 survival points,” Su Mu Ying said, walking over.
“Got it. You all go back to training. I’ll rest for a week, and then I’ll be good to go,” Wang Zhi said.
After everyone left, Wang Zhi lay on his bed and began typing on his notebook, recording the events of the past few days.
