Gu Xiaoxi had no idea that after she fell asleep, the rain, which had just stopped, started pouring heavily again.
Meanwhile, the firewood she and Li Kun had gathered was spotted by the mess squad and the soldiers of the Third Battalion, who immediately took more than half of it.
Li Kun wasn’t one to suffer losses. After some negotiation, he managed to exchange it for a tent, a roll of dried noodles, and two eggs from the logistics department.
When Gu Xiaoxi woke up, it was already 12:30 p.m., and the second batch of returning soldiers was having lunch.
Seeing his sister awake, Gu Dachuan immediately carried a bowl of egg noodles and walked in.
“Sis, come eat some noodles.”
Gu Xiaoxi took a moment to clear her head before walking over. “Brother, have you eaten?”
Gu Dachuan nodded. “I just finished. Are you feeling better? Lu Jiansen said you caught a bit of a cold.”
Gu Xiaoxi was briefly startled, then nodded. “I’m fine now. Are you all taking turns coming back to eat?”
“Yeah. We rest for four hours, then switch with Lu Jiansen’s group. You should eat well and take care of yourself.”
Looking at the bowl of egg noodles in front of her, Gu Xiaoxi felt a bit conflicted.
After some hesitation, she decided to eat it.
Only when she was full would she have the strength to work.
Yes, she had made up her mind—she was going to help retrieve the supplies that had been washed away by the flood.
However, just as she finished her meal, the deputy battalion commander of the First Battalion returned with a soldier covered in blood and wounds.
Seeing Gu Xiaoxi, Deputy Commander Ji immediately said, “He was hit by a falling tree while saving a local. Can you handle this?”
Gu Xiaoxi had never seen someone bleeding so profusely before. Unable to assess the severity of the injury at a glance, she quickly said, “Put him down. Let me take a look. Get someone to call Dr. Xu from the Third Battalion.”
“Got it.” Deputy Commander Ji had already sent someone to fetch Dr. Xu.
Gu Xiaoxi felt panicked, unsure of where to start.
After thinking for a moment, she decided to locate the bleeding points and stop the hemorrhaging first, then clean the wound.
Once the blood on his face was wiped clean, the injured soldier looked less frightening. However, when she saw the long wound extending from the corner of his eye to his forehead and scalp, she was horrified.
That must hurt so much!
She couldn’t do anything about his internal injuries, so after disinfecting the wound, she began stitching it up.
She originally planned to use a secondary-level painless suturing technique, but considering the wound was on his face, she switched to a perfect-level suturing technique instead.
After finishing the sutures, she noticed that the soldier’s arm was limp at his side—most likely dislocated.
But she didn’t know how to set a bone!
Forget it, better to wait for Dr. Xu.
Just as she was thinking this, a line of golden text suddenly flashed before her eyes.
Beginner Skill Store:
Skill 1: Reset Technique (Requires 1 Merit Point)
Skill 2: Level-1 Solidification Technique (Requires 1 Merit Point)
She glanced at her merit points display and saw that, at some point, she had gained another point.
What else could she do? She had no choice but to spend it.
She learned the Reset Technique and used it to set the soldier’s dislocated arm back in place.
Her movements were so sudden and unexpected that the soldier, unprepared and in extreme pain, let out a loud scream.
Hearing the cry, Xu Jing, who had been running over, nearly twisted her ankle in shock.
But when she saw the injured soldier, she was puzzled. He didn’t look as severely injured as the First Battalion had claimed!
However, when she took a closer look at the nearly invisible sutures on the soldier’s face and forehead, along with his blood-soaked uniform, she immediately dismissed her previous thoughts.
This man really was seriously injured!
Gu Xiaoxi saw that Dr. Xu had arrived and immediately stepped aside. “Dr. Xu, please check if he has any other internal injuries. I only sutured the bleeding wounds and reset his right hand.”
“Oh, alright! I’ll examine him now.” Xu Jing suppressed her surprise and quickly proceeded with the check-up.
After the examination, her expression turned serious. “His ribcage is deformed, his skin is bruised and bleeding, his breathing is abnormal, and he’s experiencing chest pain. His ribs are likely fractured—we need to get him to a hospital immediately.”
Upon hearing Dr. Xu’s diagnosis, Deputy Commander Ji wasted no time and arranged for the injured soldier to be transported to the hospital.
Dr. Xu quickly followed.
Gu Xiaoxi let out a sigh, hoping the soldier would receive the best possible care and recover soon to return to his unit.
Gu Dachuan had been stunned by his sister’s actions. When he snapped out of it, he asked curiously, “Sis, how do you even know how to reset bones?”
Wasn’t this kind of skill usually mastered only by experienced Chinese medicine doctors or veteran practitioners?
Gu Xiaoxi blinked and casually replied, “Resetting bones isn’t that different from the wooden dolls Grandpa gave me when I was a kid. Twist here, turn there, and the joint is back in place.”
Gu Dachuan: “…”
He suspected his sister was blatantly making things up—and he had proof!
Not wanting to explain further, Gu Xiaoxi changed the subject. “Brother, go get some rest! If you don’t rest properly, how will you serve the people? If you get sick, someone else will have to take care of you.”
Gu Dachuan cleared his throat. “Alright, I’m going to rest now.”
Once her brother had left, Gu Xiaoxi wandered around the area.
As she reached the back of the camp, she saw a vast expanse of water in the distance. Shadows moved along the shore—it seemed some people were searching for survivors or retrieving lost supplies.
After watching for a while, she decided to head over.
But before she got far, Li Kun caught up to her.
“Sister-in-law, the water over there is fast and full of slippery rocks. You should stay in the camp.”
If anything happened to her—if she slipped or got hurt—he’d be scolded to death by the battalion commander!
Gu Xiaoxi turned to reassure him. “Don’t worry, I’m just going to take a look. Want to come with me?”
Li Kun didn’t dare drag her back, and persuasion wasn’t working either, so he had no choice but to follow.
After walking for a bit, Gu Xiaoxi saw a broken wooden basin floating by the water. She picked up a stick, pulled the basin ashore, and grabbed some water plants to scrub it clean.
In no time, the broken basin was spotless.
She handed it to Li Kun. “Take this back to store supplies.”
Li Kun silently took the basin. “Alright.”
A little while later, she found a dented iron pot. After scrubbing it thoroughly, she realized it was still about 60% usable.
Gu Xiaoxi nodded. “Still good!”
And just like that, Li Kun ended up holding an iron pot as well.
Not long after, they discovered a mud-covered roll of fine cotton cloth.
Gu Xiaoxi washed and scrubbed it as before, and soon, a clean piece of fabric emerged.
She turned to Li Kun. “Take this back and hang it somewhere to dry, then come find me again. These things just need a little cleaning, and they’ll be useful again. We’re saving resources, aren’t we?”
Li Kun found her logic sound and immediately followed her instructions, carrying everything back to camp.
As soon as Li Kun left, Gu Xiaoxi could finally work without restraint.
She gathered a pile of floating debris—broken wood, damaged tables, and chairs—and tossed them into the Old Goods Storage.
Then, she noticed that the New Items Display Hall had two new options.
The first option: A pile of wooden planks.
The second option: Another pile of wooden planks—except this one looked slightly smoother than the first.
Gu Xiaoxi was puzzled. Why hadn’t the old furniture transformed into new furniture this time?
