The six of them ascended the stairs to the 11th floor.
“I told you, Team Leader Wang, you can’t just rely on your feelings. These few little zombies, I, Li Feihong, can handle them all by myself!” The fat guy boasted as he climbed the stairs.
“Shh! Fatty, keep your voice down! It’s best if there’s no danger! Do you think I want to come back empty-handed?” Wang Zhi responded irritably.
Creak~ Wang Zhi pushed open the door to the 11th floor. The six of them entered the hallway, which looked no different from the lower floors. The walls were covered with scratch marks. What caught Wang Zhi’s attention was a zombie lying on the ground in the distance, while another zombie sat nearby, both with their backs to Wang Zhi and the others.
Just as Old He was about to shoot the zombie in the head, the sitting zombie suddenly turned its head 180 degrees, staring at Wang Zhi and the others. It was still chewing on the entrails of the zombie on the ground.
Wang Zhi’s pupils contracted. “Old He, shoot!”
Just as Old He was about to pull the trigger, the sitting zombie disappeared into the darkness.
“What… Did I see that right? It vanished?” Fatty said in shock, staring at the spot where the zombie had disappeared.
“Is that… a mutated zombie?” Old He asked, still holding his gun, staring ahead.
Wang Zhi didn’t respond. He was thinking about whether they could fight that mutated zombie. Luckily, it wasn’t a giant mutated beast, otherwise, Wang Zhi would have run for his life.
“Could it be… it can turn invisible?” Zhang Ming speculated.
“Invisible?”
Upon hearing Zhang Ming’s guess, everyone became alert, watching their surroundings carefully. If that zombie could really turn invisible, it could appear next to them at any time.
Just then, Wang Zhi suddenly heard a low growl.
“Be careful! It’s nearby!”
As soon as Wang Zhi finished speaking, the mutated zombie leaped down from the ceiling above, and its target was clearly Wang Zhi!
“Be careful! Ah!”
Zhang Ming, who was behind Wang Zhi, immediately pushed Wang Zhi out of the way. However, he was too slow to dodge, and the sharp serrated claws of the zombie slashed across Zhang Ming’s forearm.
As the zombie appeared, the others quickly locked onto their target and drew their melee weapons to strike.
The mutated zombie, seeing that its initial attack had failed, prepared to escape. Just as the others were about to close in on it, the zombie started to fade at a visible speed, blending into its surroundings.
As it seemed ready to disappear again, Su Mu Ying continued moving forward, predicting the escape route of the mutated zombie and stabbing into the air.
“Roar!”
With Su Mu Ying’s hand holding the weapon “Fentian,” she stabbed into the seemingly empty space. The mutated zombie screamed in agony. At the same time, Su Mu Ying staggered back as if kicked, taking several steps back.
Seeing that Su Mu Ying had struck the mutated zombie, the others immediately pulled out their guns and began shooting at that spot.
“Stop shooting, it ran away,” Su Mu Ying said, pointing at the bloodstains left on the ground by the zombie.
When the zombie appeared, everyone clearly saw that it was wearing no clothes, its body covered in blood. Its arms had mutated into something like the serrated claws of a praying mantis.
As the zombie fled, Wang Zhi immediately turned around to check on Zhang Ming. He saw that Zhang Ming’s hazmat suit had been torn open, and blood was pouring out from his arm.
“Zhang Ming, hang in there!” Wang Zhi shouted.
Boom! Boom!
After speaking, Wang Zhi immediately took out his Desert Eagle and fired two shots into Zhang Ming’s arm!
“Ah!” Zhang Ming screamed in pain.
“Wang Zhi! What are you doing?!”
“Team Leader Wang, you—!”
Old He and Fatty were shocked by Wang Zhi’s actions, both shouting at him.
“His arm is infected. The zombie’s blood is on our knives. The only way to save him is to use the gun.” Wang Zhi said as he snapped Zhang Ming’s severed arm and pulled out a first-aid kit from his backpack to bandage and stop the bleeding.
“Xiao Ming! It’s all my fault. Hold on, don’t worry. You’ll be fine,” Fatty said, trembling as he held Zhang Ming.
After Zhang Ming’s arm was bandaged, Wang Zhi injected him with adrenaline to keep his heart active and alert.
“Fatty, support him! We’ll go after that mutated zombie. Since it’s been wounded, we can track it by the blood trail!” Wang Zhi said as he picked up his handgun.
The group didn’t hesitate. They had to strike while the iron was hot and eliminate the mutated zombie while it was injured.
Following the blood trail, they reached the middle of the hallway. Wang Zhi noticed the blood trail had stopped, and the group immediately began shooting around the area.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The surrounding walls were riddled with bullet holes, but there was no sign of the mutated zombie.
Wang Zhi looked up and saw a hole in the ceiling, through which the 12th floor was clearly visible.
They exchanged glances, and it was clear to everyone that the mutated zombie had already escaped to the 12th floor.
Wang Zhi immediately returned to the stairs and climbed to the 12th floor.
At the hole in the 12th floor, they continued following the blood trail, which led them into a room.
Wang Zhi stopped and confirmed that the mutated zombie was hiding in this room.
He took out his last high-explosive grenade, carefully pulled off the safety pin, and threw it into the room. The grenade exploded with a loud bang.
Boom!
With the explosion, the mutated zombie leaped out of the room, engulfed in flames. Its body was severely damaged by the blast.
“Open fire!” Wang Zhi ordered.
Seeing such a clear target, everyone immediately opened fire, shooting the mutated zombie as it fell to the ground, struggling to survive.
Wang Zhi was about to approach and finish it off when, suddenly, the mutated zombie let out an enraged roar, as if it was either calling for help or seeking a final confrontation.
Roar!!!
The deafening roar shattered some of the thinner glass in the hospital, leaving Wang Zhi and the others momentarily stunned, feeling dizzy and disoriented.
Wang Zhi forced himself to recover and continued firing at the zombie’s head until he was sure it was dead. Only then did he lower his hand, clutching his head, which was still ringing from the roar.
“Damn, where did this bastard get the strength to roar so loud?” Fatty muttered, covering his ears.
Wang Zhi thought about the crystal core in Jie Xi’s hand. According to Jie Xi, she had extracted it from the head of a mutated giant snake. Could this mutated zombie have a crystal core too?
Thinking of this, Wang Zhi pulled out his knife and began to slice open the zombie’s skull, searching inside. After a while, he found a hard object, which he pried out with his knife. The crystal core was covered in blood and was about half the size of the one Jie Xi had.
Wang Zhi wrapped it in cloth and put it away.
“We need to find some medicine quickly,” Wang Zhi said.
“Not… not good!” A trembling voice came from the radio. It was Old He.
Wang Zhi’s heart skipped a beat. It was the first time he had heard Old He sound so panicked. What could have happened to make him so anxious?
