The people on the other end of the line were overjoyed.
Before, they didn’t understand; after this incident, Lin Dawei and Ye Lian specifically inquired about military marriages.
The more they learned, the more worried they became.
They were worried sick, but they didn’t tell Lin Yuyao.
Now that they knew they hadn’t gotten their marriage certificate, they were overjoyed.
Ye Lian said, “So can you come back?”
Come back?
They spent so much money, probably borrowed money, and she hadn’t earned it back yet; how could she have the face to go back?
Lin Yuyao said, “Father, and Mother, I haven’t gotten the documents and materials back yet; I’m going to get them on Monday.”
“That’s true, so will you come home after you get them back?”
“Well… I probably can’t come back for a while.”
“Ah? What do you mean?”
“Didn’t I say last time that I found a job and rented an apartment nearby? I haven’t been working for long, so it’s not good to quit now. Also, for the apartment, I signed a year-long contract, so I have to rent it for a year; otherwise, they won’t return my deposit.”
She briefly calculated the losses if she went back now and her plans.
Before, she had planned to marry Lu Jiangting.
That’s how it was for girls in the countryside in those days; they grew up, got married, had children, took care of the family, and that was their life. Almost all the girls in the village were like that. But after she had that dream, she knew that girls had better and more choices.
Women could hold up half the sky; she couldn’t let her whole life depend on others.
Otherwise, even if she got rid of Lu Jiangting, her life wouldn’t necessarily be good.
This time, Lin Yuyao didn’t worry about the phone bill; she spoke earnestly to her parents.
“Father, Mother, when I earn money, I’ll take good care of you.” She promised.
Lin Dawei and Ye Lian were moved to tears, saying that their daughter had grown up.
“Okay, okay, it’s good that you have your own plans. Women can hold up half the sky; that’s true, our Yuyao is no worse than your brothers.”
Lin Yuyao thought, her parents were so good.
Many girls were used by their parents to exchange for bride prices for their sons; her parents had never thought that way and even helped her save her dowry. All the misfortunes in her life came from Lu Jiangting; thankfully, in reality, she was going to get rid of Lu Jiangting.
“By the way, how is Lin Ping doing?”
“He’s very busy. He only comes back for half a day a month; he takes the money and leaves.”
“Hmm, he’s going to take an exam, so of course, he’s busy.”
“Yes.” Speaking of this son, Lin Fu and Lin Mu were happy and proud.
“He said he wants to go to military academy, the same school as Lu Jiangting.”
Mentioning Lu Jiangting made the atmosphere a little awkward.
Lin Yuyao smiled to ease the tension, “Mother, I know, he told me before. He said that man was too powerful, and I would be looked down upon. So, he also wants to go to that school, graduate as an officer, and protect me.”
“Haha, yes, your brother isn’t going to that school because of that heartless Lu Jiangting; he’s doing it to protect you. If you have an officer brother, it will be easier for you to find a partner in the future.”
“Yes.”
Lin Dawei added, “Don’t look for a partner now; work hard for two years. When your brother becomes an officer, let him introduce someone to you. Someone better than Lu Jiangting.”
Lin Yuyao: “…”
My Father is so ambitious.
“Your Father is right,” Ye Lian chimed in.
Lin Yuyao said awkwardly, “Wouldn’t his classmates be younger than me? They might say I’m an older woman dating a younger man.”
Ye Lian said, “What’s the matter with being younger? Three years older for the woman brings gold bricks; a couple of years younger is just right.”
This…
Lin Yuyao couldn’t help but laugh.
Although people are happy and don’t mind spending more on phone calls, money shouldn’t be wasted like this. Seeing the conversation going off-topic, Lin Yuyao hung up the phone, saying that she ran out of phone credit. After the call, it was already evening; she had a simple bowl of noodles at a nearby noodle shop before going home.
It was really hot these days, humid and stuffy.
She lived on the top floor with a balcony, which was convenient, but it was too hot in the summer.
Fortunately, there was an attic; if it were her previous apartment, it would have been even hotter in this weather.
Even though Lin Yuyao was frugal, she had to turn on the fan.
With the fan blowing, the stuffiness dissipated somewhat.
Lin Yuyao brought in the clothes from the balcony and went to take a shower.
She only had two sets of clothes.
The clothes had to dry before she could change.
Fu Huayi bought the clothes, soap, and shampoo.
After showering, she smelled nice; clean clothes felt comfortable on her skin.
Lin Yuyao took an apple to eat.
She didn’t peel it; she just washed it and ate it.
This apple was also bought by Fu Huayi.
Uh…
Lin Yuyao looked herself up and down, examining her room inside and out.
She suddenly realized that everything was bought by Fu Huayi.
Did she owe him so much?
She had a strange feeling.
It wasn’t something a simple “too many debts don’t burden the body” could resolve.
…
The next day, she went to work as usual.
She had to take a day off on Monday.
The boss was easy to talk to; she told her on the phone, and the boss agreed without asking any questions.
Zhou Jing vaguely sensed something was up.
“Yuyao, is something wrong?”
Lin Yuyao hesitated, unsure how to tell her.
After all, it wasn’t a glorious matter.
“What’s wrong? Is it something difficult to talk about?”
Lin Yuyao nodded and whispered, “Some personal matters.”
Zhou Jing didn’t press further, understanding that she didn’t want to elaborate.
“Is it troublesome? If you need help, just let me know. I’m a local; I know a lot of people, definitely better than you, an outsider, fumbling around.”
“Thank you, but it’s almost over; I’ll not hesitate to ask if I need anything.”
“Okay, then.”
As she was leaving work, she saw Lu Jiangting standing at the entrance with red eyes.
His eyes were filled with dark circles, and his stubble was prominent; he didn’t seem to be doing well.
In the past, Lin Yuyao would have felt sorry for him.
But now, she only thought he deserved it.
Since he felt he owed Wang Jianjun and needed to repay him for life.
Since he had made up his mind, then he should accept the consequences of his choices.
But why drag an innocent person like her into it?
He wanted unconditional, boundless repayment of his debt, and he also wanted her.
Wanting everything, in the end, he would get nothing.
He was too greedy.
Lin Yuyao ignored him and turned to leave.
Lu Jiangting followed her from a distance.
At this rate, he would follow her to her apartment.
Lin Yuyao was furious.
Instead of going straight home, she stopped at the crowded square.
“Lu Jiangting, what exactly do you want? If you keep following me, I’ll…” She pointed to the police station across the street, “I’ll call the police and have you arrested as a hooligan.”
“I…” Lu Jiangting opened his mouth, hesitating.
Lin Yuyao sneered, “We’re not married, and you can’t produce a marriage certificate. So, you’re following me; what’s that supposed to mean?”
Lu Jiangting instantly deflated like a punctured balloon.
