Wang Zhi lowered his head, eating breakfast while pondering the hypothesis Su Muying had just proposed.
“I think we should observe how other teams react after their injections. As long as there are no major side effects, we can give it a try. After all, there’s nothing to lose. If we do get injured later, we can just monitor ourselves to see whether the vaccine actually works.” Wang Zhi said while taking a bite of the bun in his hand.
“That makes sense. Since there’s no downside, we’ll just assume the vaccine has no effect for now.” Lao He agreed from the side.
After finishing breakfast, Wang Zhi led the group to the medical room. However, upon arriving, they realized that only a few teams had received the notification.
Tang Qilin’s team was among them. At that moment, Tang Qilin had just finished his injection and was heading out.
“Fatty, go follow Tang Qilin and observe whether they show any abnormal reactions. Remember! Follow them openly. If he questions you, just be honest.” Wang Zhi leaned in and instructed in a low voice.
He deliberately chose to be upfront about his intentions. If suspicions arose, no matter what he did, the other party would assume he had ulterior motives. So instead of hiding it, Wang Zhi decided to be direct from the start.
“Got it!” Fatty responded and turned to follow.
“Liu Li, you go with Fatty too.”
After a brief thought, Wang Zhi also sent Liu Li along. Even though Dawn Tower maintained order well, he still felt uneasy letting someone go alone.
A while later, another team walked out. Wang Zhi and the remaining two followed them. He noticed that the teams who had prioritized getting vaccinated were all third-level teams. This quickly led him to a conclusion—Dawn Tower had limited supplies of the virus antibody vaccine and was prioritizing higher-level teams for injections.
If Dawn Tower wasn’t testing the vaccine on first-level teams first, it meant they were confident in its effectiveness. If Su Muying’s speculation was correct, then logically, Dawn Tower should have tested it on first-level teams before moving on to stronger ones. It wouldn’t make sense for them to use third-level teams as test subjects.
With that thought, Wang Zhi’s doubts about the vaccine lessened significantly.
The three of them followed the team for two hours. During this time, the opposing captain noticed them and came over to confront Wang Zhi. After hearing that they were merely observing the vaccine’s effects, the captain laughed and mockingly called them cowards before walking away.
Wang Zhi didn’t care about what others said. In the apocalypse, if something went wrong, no one would stand up for you. It was always better to be cautious.
“Fatty, Fatty, how’s it going on your end?” Wang Zhi called over the radio.
“Everything’s normal, Captain Wang.”
Hearing this response, Wang Zhi was momentarily stunned.
“Tang Qilin didn’t notice you?”
“He noticed, but he didn’t seem to care. He’s been ignoring us the whole time.”
“Alright, understood. Let’s regroup at the medical room.”
Since neither of the observed teams showed any abnormalities, it was safe for their own group to receive the vaccine.
Once everyone gathered, they entered the medical room. The nurse in charge of registration was the same one who had delivered supplies to them previously. She was briefly surprised to see Wang Zhi’s team before quickly regaining her composure and taking their magnetic cards for registration.
After completing the registration process, the group was led inside, where Director Sophie was personally administering the vaccines to the survivors.
“Why are you only coming now? We’ve been waiting for you.” Sophie frowned slightly, showing some dissatisfaction.
“Hehe, we got held up by something. Director Sophie, how many doses are in this first batch? The vaccinations seem to be progressing quite fast.”
Wang Zhi sat down and exposed his left arm.
“We’ve only managed to produce 100 doses so far. Due to a shortage of raw medical materials, we’ll need survivors to collect more in order to produce the second batch. Alright, next.” Sophie said as she withdrew the needle.
“Heh, Director Sophie, aren’t you guys at Dawn Tower taking the vaccine yourselves?” Fatty asked with a grin as he sat down.
“Heh, we don’t go outside, so it doesn’t really matter whether we take it or not.” Sophie chuckled, as if amused by the question.
After everyone finished getting vaccinated, they left the medical room.
Just now, when Sophie mentioned the shortage of raw materials, Wang Zhi immediately realized that the upcoming missions would likely involve gathering those resources.
And those medical materials were usually found in the city. After experiencing a trip into the city firsthand, he still felt a lingering sense of fear.
If Jie Xi hadn’t arrived in time that day, they would have been swallowed by the massive zombie horde.
Back at their residence, Wang Zhi changed into his weighted training suit and headed to the training ground. Ever since the training reward system was reinstated, everyone’s motivation for training had noticeably increased.
Meanwhile, in the Tower Master’s chamber…
“Tower Master, the squad sent to track Doomsday Eternal has reported… no signs of activity.”
Speaking was Adam, the commanding officer of the investigation team. He stood in the room alongside Jie Xi, delivering his report.
“Not a single survivor?” The Tower Master’s voice carried a trace of anger.
“None…”
“Did they reach their destination?”
“Yes, they arrived near Doomsday Eternal’s last known location.”
“Hmm…” The Tower Master lifted his gaze.
“Tower Master, should we continue the investigation?” Jie Xi asked after seeing the prolonged silence.
“How many stored points remain in Doomsday Eternal’s magnetic card?” The Tower Master pondered for a moment before asking.
“A total of twenty thousand stored points.” Jie Xi responded.
“Good. Adam, post a mission bounty in the hall. Any team that retrieves Doomsday Eternal’s magnetic card will be rewarded with twenty thousand points.” The Tower Master said slowly.
“Tower Master… wouldn’t this cause panic among the survivors?” Adam hesitated.
“They live in fear already. What I want to see is how they react when true fear arrives. Can they face it, overcome it, and eliminate it?”
“I understand, Tower Master!” Adam nodded and left to carry out the order.
“Sigh…”
The Tower Master watched Adam’s departing figure and let out a long sigh.
“Jie Xi, what’s your opinion on this matter?”
“The fact that Doomsday Eternal’s magnetic card still contains Dawn Tower’s twenty thousand stored points suggests that they didn’t plan to leave permanently. Their departure wasn’t premeditated.
“If they had encountered a stronger sanctuary than ours, they would have returned to convert the points into resources before defecting. Even if they had used reverse thinking to avoid that suspicion, and were planning an attack, they would still need the card as a key to open the entrance.
“Furthermore, our aerial surveillance within a 100-meter altitude radius has found no signs of other sanctuaries.
“Therefore, it can be concluded that the deaths of Doomsday Eternal’s members are real. There’s a high probability that a mutated creature exists there.”
Jie Xi analyzed the situation.
“Haha, Jie Xi, as expected of you. Now, tell me—why do you think I haven’t given up on the investigation?” The Tower Master smiled and looked at her expectantly.
