Chapter 98: She Ultimately Became Insecure
After purchasing the ammunition, Wang Zhi took Liuli to the food supply area, as he planned to search for survivors outside for a maximum of seven days. The food was also distributed according to this seven-day plan.
Seven days was Wang Zhi’s bottom line. If they still couldn’t find any other survivors by then, they would have to retreat and return no matter what.
While Wang Zhi was picking out supplies, he felt a tug on the corner of his shirt. He turned around and saw that Liuli was pulling on him.
“What’s wrong, Liuli?” Wang Zhi asked.
“Captain… what should I eat to… to look like Sister Ying?” Liuli said quietly, lowering her head.
After hearing Liuli’s words, Wang Zhi froze for a moment. He then glanced at her chest and realized she had become insecure…
“Cough! Liuli, actually, you’re perfectly fine as you are,” Wang Zhi didn’t know exactly how to respond, so he tried comforting her.
“Really?” Liuli looked up and asked.
“Yes!” Wang Zhi nodded firmly. Now, more than ever, he needed to give her confidence.
After receiving Wang Zhi’s reassurance, a smile gradually appeared on Liuli’s face.
In the end, Wang Zhi spent 300 survival points to buy enough food supplies for the six of them for seven days. The two of them then carried the heavy bags of food and headed back.
On the way back, a young girl suddenly appeared in front of them. The girl looked to be around ten years old.
“Brother, sister, could you please give me something to eat? I haven’t had anything to eat for a long time,” the girl said, eyeing the food in their hands.
Wang Zhi looked at the little girl. Her clothes were ragged and dirty, and her face appeared to have been smeared with dust for several days.
“Where are the people from your team?” Wang Zhi asked with a smile.
“They don’t want me anymore,” the girl replied.
“Well… how about you go to the ecological area? They provide meals there,” Wang Zhi suggested.
But before Wang Zhi could move on, the girl stopped them again, saying, “Please, please, if you don’t give me food, they really will kill me!” The girl began to sob.
Seeing this, Liuli couldn’t bear it and was about to hand the food to the girl. However, Wang Zhi grabbed her hand and pulled it back.
“That’s your problem. If you don’t have the ability, just go back and be a beggar. Let the citizens have their place,” Wang Zhi said as he walked away with Liuli.
The girl, realizing they were alone and vulnerable, raised her hand and made a gesture.
Just as Wang Zhi took a few steps, three men appeared in front of him, blocking his way.
Wang Zhi furrowed his brow. Was it his bad luck, or was this area always like this?
“You brat, don’t be ungrateful. We won’t make things hard for you. Leave half behind, and we’ll let you pass,” one of the men with a scar on his face said arrogantly.
“Wait, don’t you people in the Dawn Tower manage these things?” Wang Zhi asked, confused.
“Heh, we don’t kill people, and we don’t hurt people. Why should anyone manage us?” the scarred man retorted.
“Oh? Interesting. So you don’t kill or hurt anyone, but how do you plan to take things from me? With your words?” Wang Zhi said, looking at them with interest.
“Of course, we’ll take it by force!” the scarred man said, his voice full of bravado.
As the three men approached, Wang Zhi suddenly drew his sand eagle gun and pointed it at them, as if ready to shoot at any moment.
“You… you want to kill someone here?” the scarred man stammered, his fear evident.
Wang Zhi shook his head. “No, I just took it out to scare you.”
The three men stood frozen for a moment, then looked at the scarred man.
“What are you looking at me for? Does he really dare shoot? Get him!” the scarred man ordered.
Bang!
Just as the scarred man was about to take another step forward, Wang Zhi fired a shot at his feet.
The sound of the bullet hitting the ground echoed as the shell clattered.
The three men were completely stunned, and they started to have second thoughts. They hadn’t expected Wang Zhi to actually fire.
“If you’re going to beg for food, do it properly. If you want to rob people, go outside,” Wang Zhi said with disdain, then turned to leave.
Just as they were about to walk away, the security team arrived from a distance. Although Wang Zhi’s gun had a silencer, the situation could still be monitored by surveillance.
Leading the team was the deputy captain, Wu Changzheng. This time, Wu Changzheng didn’t take the same aggressive approach as when he first met Wang Zhi. Instead, he came over and greeted him, “Captain Wang, what’s going on here?”
“A couple of beggars showed up, and then they suddenly turned into robbers. I got scared and accidentally fired a shot,” Wang Zhi said casually.
Wu Changzheng frowned after hearing that.
“Take those three away!” Wu Changzheng waved his hand.
“By the way, there’s a little girl too. She’s also with them,” Wang Zhi pointed to the girl, who had already run off, and turned to leave.
For Wang Zhi, there were no “pitiful” people in the Dawn Tower. Everyone was the same. With hands and feet, they were the same before the apocalypse and still the same after. Survival was what mattered, and he looked down on those who expected to sit back and relax without putting in effort.
Wang Zhi returned to the residence and planned to find time to take everyone to practice using the grappling hooks. After all, this tool was something that wouldn’t be used casually. If they had to use it, it would definitely be in a critical moment. So, he needed to ensure that everyone could use it steadily and safely.
Wang Zhi called everyone on the radio and asked them to change into their combat uniforms. Then, they headed to a training ground surrounded by stone walls.
Wang Zhi took out the grappling hooks and demonstrated how to use them to Fatty and Liuli. As for Duan He and Ying, he didn’t need to show off in front of them.
After explaining the theory, they moved on to practice. The way to fire the grappling hook was similar to using a pistol: aim at a spot, press the button, and…
Clang! Wang Zhi shot the hook into a wall six meters above. After pressing the retract button, the cable pulled back, and Wang Zhi used his legs to help push himself up, landing on the wall.
“Try it yourself,” Wang Zhi said as he jumped off the wall.
After a few more rounds of practice, everyone became more familiar with the sensation, and they began high-level training.
High-level training involved jumping from one side of a high wall to the other side, which required a higher level of proficiency and needed two actions: fixing the hook and retracting it before landing.
They practiced for a while longer until the gas for the grappling hook was used up, at which point Wang Zhi called a halt to the session.
