Chapter 68 – Awakening! Moonhowl Sky Wolf
Silverfang’s sudden action caught Wu Shaochen completely off guard. All this time, Silverfang had always done whatever he told it to do—it had been obedient to a fault. Wu Shaochen had never encountered a situation like this before, not even heard of one.
“Could it have developed self-awareness after leveling up?” Wu Shaochen wondered to himself. That was the only possible explanation. He quickly turned his gaze to Silverfang. After swallowing the bloodline potion, Silverfang seemed to have entered a special state. It stood there still, while glowing particles circled around its body.
“What is this?? Could it be… awakening?” Wu Shaochen’s face lit up with surprise and delight. But at this point, there was nothing he could do—he could only stand by and quietly wait.
Soon, Silverfang was completely enveloped by countless light particles. Wu Shaochen could no longer see what was happening inside, but he could hear muffled, choked howls coming from within. It sounded like the wolf was enduring tremendous pain.
Wu Shaochen clenched his fists, silently rooting, “Come on, you got this!”
The howling lasted for a full half hour. However, Wu Shaochen didn’t receive a system notification for a successful breakthrough. Instead, a prompt popped up that left him dumbfounded:
“Ding! Your pet Silverfang has undergone an unknown mutation. Pet contract has been automatically dissolved.”
“What the hell?!” Wu Shaochen was completely stunned. It can do that?? He immediately opened his pet space—sure enough, it was completely empty. Normally, even when a pet was deployed, a shadow would still appear inside the pet space, allowing summoning and retrieval. But now it was empty—nothing. He checked the pet rankings, and as expected, Silverfang, which had been ranked first, had vanished. The second-place pet, Huihui, had now taken the top spot.
Even many players noticed that the number one pet on the rankings had disappeared, and the regional chat was abuzz with discussion.
“Hey, has anyone else noticed that the top-ranked pet is gone?”
“Yeah, I heard it belonged to Dust-Sealed. Why did it suddenly vanish? Did it die?”
“Even if it died, it would only lose a level, not disappear. Disappearance only happens in two cases: the player releases it, or the pet defects.”
“So what’s the deal with Dust-Sealed’s pet? Did he release it? Or maybe he found a better one?”
“Who knows? But if it was better, it should’ve already shown up in the rankings.”
Wu Shaochen stared blankly at the glowing mass before him, still clueless about what was happening. “Sigh, guess I’ll just keep waiting to see how it plays out.”
And so he waited another thirty minutes. Finally, he saw the light particles begin to fade, slowly revealing a small but regal-looking wolf standing before him. Yes—a small wolf, about the same size as Silverfang had been when it was first born. As for why it looked regal, Wu Shaochen couldn’t quite put it into words. He just felt it—the little wolf exuded the aura of a proud and lonely king. Its silver fur was smoother than ever, especially the area from its head down to its neck, which gleamed with luster. At the moment, the little wolf still had its eyes closed, as if it was sensing something. Out of curiosity, Wu Shaochen cast an Insight skill on it.
[Awakening Moonhowl Sky Wolf]
(Due to stimulation from the bloodline potion, the Moonhowl Sky Wolf’s bloodline has been triggered. After enduring the pain of atavism, it is now awakening. All stats have reset to base values.)
“What the… seriously?!” Wu Shaochen’s eyes widened. Moonhowl Sky Wolf, huh? That sounds powerful. His status just got a serious upgrade. But what now? Should he treat it like a boss and kill it? Or back away before it kills him? After all, this creature standing in front of him was no longer his pet.
Just as Wu Shaochen was still hesitating, the little wolf suddenly opened its eyes and gazed into the sky. That was a gaze that seemed to look down upon all creation—majestic and commanding. Yet hidden within those eyes were traces of loneliness and sorrow. A few seconds later, the light in its eyes dimmed as it turned to look directly at Wu Shaochen, making his heart tense up.
“Are we about to become enemies?” Wu Shaochen gripped the dagger in his hand tighter. To be honest, unless absolutely necessary, he really didn’t want to fight the wolf standing before him. No matter what it had become, it was once his companion. But just then, a system notification rang out:
“Ding! The Moonhowl Sky Wolf requests to become your pet. Do you accept?”
“Huh?” Wu Shaochen froze for a second, and then looked at the little wolf with joy written all over his face. He quickly hit [Accept]. Losing it and then getting it back again—this feeling is amazing.
“Ding! Congratulations, you’ve obtained the pet [Moonhowl Sky Wolf]. Please name your pet.”
“Silverfang.”
Might as well stick with the old name—he was already used to it.
“Ding! Naming successful. Since the Moonhowl Sky Wolf is still in the awakening phase and requires large amounts of energy, do you agree to allocate 40% of earned EXP to your pet? Once fully awakened, it will return to 20%.”
“Yes, yes! Absolutely!” Wu Shaochen was elated. For him, leveling up wasn’t hard—what mattered was upgrading his Immortal Body and talents. After confirming, he quickly opened Silverfang’s stats. A Moonhowl Sky Wolf—it’s gotta be strong, right?
[Silverfang]
Exclusive Talent – Moonhowl Sky Wolf: Increases attack damage by 30%, and grants 30% life steal on attacks.
Skill 1 – Blitz: Increases attack and movement speed by 50% for 30 seconds. Cooldown: 2 minutes.
Skill 2 – Rallying Howl: Lets out a roar that increases self and allies’ damage and defense by 20% for 30 seconds. Cooldown: 2 minutes.
“This… these are base stats at level 0?! You’ve gotta be kidding me. With those stats, it’s basically a boss! If it just sat at the entrance of the newbie village, it could one-shot anything that came near.” Wu Shaochen was stunned. These starting stats were way better than Silverfang’s previous ones, and it even came with two skills and a talent right from the start—ridiculously overpowered. Looking at the now-gentle Moonhowl Sky Wolf, which was completely different from the imposing figure just moments ago, Wu Shaochen still didn’t dare to hug it. That earlier look in its eyes had made it hard for him to see it as just a little wolf pup. So instead, he gave its head a pat and declared with pride, “Come on, bro, let’s go level up!”
After that, he brought the newly awakened Silverfang along to continue hunting ghosts. The lighting was too dim and the map was huge, so even though there were a lot of ghosts, he had to search for them one by one. It was way less efficient than farming skeletons. After four full hours of grinding, plus the 9 he killed earlier, he’d slain 341 ghosts total.
At that point, Wu Shaochen paused. Something wasn’t adding up. His talent points were still increasing. When he started, he had 540 talent points, and after killing 341 ghosts, he now had 881. But that was strange—he was now level 22, in the Silver Realm. Based on calculations, Silver Realm should offer 40x poison resistance, meaning the cap should be 880. But now it was 881.
“Could it be that advancing to Silver Realm doesn’t just add 10x talent scaling?” Wu Shaochen mused. To test his theory, he kept grinding ghosts. After another 3 hours and 220 more ghosts, his talent finally hit the new cap—1100 points.
“50x!” Wu Shaochen’s eyes gleamed with excitement. “If I’m right, advancing to Silver increased my talent scaling by 20x. That means each realm doesn’t have a fixed talent multiplier.”
Thinking of this, Wu Shaochen could hardly contain his excitement. After all, who would ever complain about becoming even more overpowered?
