Chapter 58: She Seems to Understand His Feelings
Inside the room, Lin Yuyao was writing her novel when she heard the sound of someone turning a key. She put down her pen, pulled out the toy gun Fu Huayi had given her for protection, and cautiously approached the door.
Fu Huayi pulled the key out, blew on it, and tried inserting it into the keyhole again.
It went in, but it wouldn’t turn.
What was going on?
He grew frustrated and kicked the door.
Yes, it was the door, not the wall.
“What’s going on? Why won’t it open?”
The voice was loud, and Lin Yuyao, with her ear pressed against the door, recognized it as Fu Huayi’s voice.
She also wanted to know what was going on—why was he kicking her door in the middle of the night?
As she pondered this, Fu Huayi inserted the key again and turned it forcefully.
Lin Yuyao guessed he had the wrong door and worried he might break the key inside. When the door finally opened, their eyes met.
“Brother Fu, you’ve got the wrong door; your place is downstairs,” Lin Yuyao reminded him.
“Burp.” Fu Huayi let out a belch, a strong smell of alcohol wafting over.
Lin Yuyao realized he was drunk.
“Brother Fu, let me help you downstairs.”
Fu Huayi glanced inside her room, noticing the furniture he had bought and the fan.
“Right, this is my home… burp, it’s definitely my home.”
Seeing him like this, Lin Yuyao could only shake her head helplessly and planned to coax him once he came inside.
Unexpectedly, he just plopped down on her bed and didn’t move.
Lin Yuyao: “…”
What a situation…
She crouched down and softly called out to him, “Brother Fu.”
“Brother Fu?”
But there was no response.
She thought, could he have fallen asleep?
She had heard that soldiers could fall asleep in an instant; Lu Jiangting was like that.
So… he really was asleep?
Lin Yuyao looked at him—he was so big, and she couldn’t carry him downstairs.
That left her with no choice… she would let him have the bed and sleep on the floor instead.
The floor was clean, and in the hot weather, she didn’t have to worry about catching a cold.
Lin Yuyao packed away her manuscript, quietly washed up, and then turned off the light, lying down on the floor to sleep.
Feeling the hard surface of the floor, she suddenly remembered that terrible dream.
In her years of accompanying her daughter while studying, they couldn’t afford a big house and rented a very small one.
The room could barely fit a small bed, and initially, the two of them could squeeze together to sleep.
But her daughter said she needed to sleep well to have energy for class the next day, begging her to rent a bigger house.
Who wouldn’t want to live in a big house?
But big houses were expensive; her father only sent a small amount of money each month.
After her grandparents passed away, they slashed the living expenses again, citing that living in the countryside meant they had enough to eat and drink without spending.
That little bit of money was only enough to keep them from starving, allowing them to rent such a small house.
Out of desperation, she had to sleep on the floor.
That night, recalling all those painful memories, she fell asleep feeling desolate.
…
It was Fu Huayi’s first time getting drunk, and he slept soundly.
However, when he woke up, saw the room, and noticed Lin Yuyao sleeping on the floor, he felt terrible.
He slapped his forehead and rubbed his temples.
Trying hard to remember what happened the night before, he vaguely recalled that he had gone to the wrong door and then occupied Lin Yuyao’s bed, making her sleep on the floor.
Drinking really caused trouble; indeed, drinking caused trouble.
This was his first time getting drunk, and he silently vowed it would be the only time in his life.
Such a thing would never happen again.
Fu Huayi sat up, waking Lin Yuyao in the process.
Lin Yuyao rubbed her sleepy eyes, and their gazes met.
Fu Huayi felt guilty and quickly averted his eyes.
While straightening his slightly disheveled clothes, he said, “I’m sorry, I…”
He couldn’t even imagine how Lin Yuyao would think about this.
Would she think he was like Lu Jiangting?
Would she think he did it on purpose?
Would she think he was despicable?
Would she think he was a scoundrel?
The more he thought about it, the more his head hurt.
Fu Huayi paused, thought for a moment, and said, “Last night, Yi Yunshuo dragged me out to drink, and I got carried away.”
He simply didn’t dare to think about what Lin Yuyao would think about this matter.
Would you think of him as someone like Lu Jiangting?
Do you think he did it on purpose?
Think he’s mean?
Do you think he is a gangster?
The more I think about it, the more headache I get.
Fu Huaiyi paused, thought for a moment, and then said, “Yi Yunshuo asked me to go drinking last night, and I drank too much because I was so happy. Xiaolin, have I caused you any trouble?”
Lin Yuyao was stunned for a moment and shook her head, “No, you walked into the wrong door and fell asleep as soon as you came in.”
“Is that so? Then I didn’t say anything, did I?”
“Nothing. I just fell asleep.”
Phew~
Fu Huaiyi let out a long breath, and the heavy stone in his heart fell to the ground.
“I’m sorry, I… Oh! I won’t do this again in the future.”
Lin Yuyao smiled and said, “It’s okay, you didn’t mean it.”
This smile made his heart flutter again.
Fu Huaiyi retracted his gaze and said, “I have something else to do. I’ll leave first.”
After saying that, He rushed outside, leaving his jacket behind.
Whether it was intentional or not, it felt a bit awkward.
After he left, Lin Yuyao locked the door again and looked at the bed.
After staring for a moment, she went over, grabbed the blanket, and took it to the balcony, stuffing it into a large bucket. She filled the bucket with water and added some laundry detergent to soak it.
Next, she rolled up the cool mat and took it to the balcony to scrub it clean, then set it aside to dry in the sun.
Once the blanket had soaked long enough, she quickly finished washing it and hung it out to dry.
The sun was bright, so she believed it would dry in a day.
By the time she finished all this, it was already getting late, and she had to work.
Lin Yuyao hurried downstairs, bought two buns, and headed to the bookstore.
She hadn’t ignored Lu Jiangting’s words from yesterday.
She had thought carefully about them upon returning.
Fu Huayi’s care for her might indeed, as Lu Jiangting said, not be purely out of kindness.
He had been harsh towards her parents, so there was certainly some guilt involved.
At first, when he said he wanted to help her out of guilt, she believed him.
But that little bit of guilt wasn’t enough to sustain all the help he had given her.
So…
Lin Yuyao bit into a bun and looked up at the rising sun in the east.
It was big and round, shining warmly on her, not hot at all.
In fact…
Perhaps due to the cool morning breeze, she felt a bit chilly instead.
Having lived her life because of a man, she didn’t trust easily anymore, or rather, she didn’t dare to believe too much…
She understood that she and Fu Huayi were not from the same world, and she was very clear about that.
Perhaps she would never marry again in her life.
Or maybe, she would meet a man who truly matched her, where neither of them felt like they were climbing higher than the other, and they would walk into the halls of marriage together.
In any case, regardless of what the future held, she absolutely would not pin her future on a man again.
…
Fu Huayi ran downstairs and hailed a car back to the base to find Yi Yunshuo.
However, he couldn’t find him.
Looking around the room, there was no sign that he had returned.
What was going on?
He vaguely remembered that he and Yi Yunshuo had separated downstairs the night before, leaving the car for him.
This morning, he checked; the parking spot where he left the car was empty, and the car was not in its place.
