The press conference today was of great significance to the Shi family.
Firstly, this was the Shi family’s first appearance after a period of silence, and it was also a grand declaration that the Shi family and the Feng family had reconciled.
After all, anyone in the industry with even a bit of insider information knew that the Shi family had taken a big hit from Feng Yan previously, so everyone was watching closely to see if they could turn things around.
To show their importance, the Shi family specially invited well-known industry figures and media reporters to the event, making it quite a spectacle.
However, to everyone’s surprise, the press conference was already halfway through, and Feng Yan had still not arrived.
Shi Yulin, who was in charge of the press conference, had a difficult expression on his face when he heard the assistant’s report.
He never expected that Feng Yan would be so disrespectful. After all, in order to get him to agree, the Shi family had already made a huge sacrifice and paid a hefty compensation.
When they had invited him to attend the press conference and give a speech, although Feng Yan’s attitude was ambiguous, it could still be felt that he was leaning towards attending.
So, was he just playing me from the beginning?
Shi Yulin tightened his grip on his phone, his face turns so dark it could almost scare all the employee surrounding him.
The assistant looked slightly panicked, seeking advice in a low voice: “Mr. Shi, what should we do? The next part of the program should be Feng Yan’s appearance.”
“Feng Yan hasn’t shown up, and no one from the Feng family is here either? What about Feng Shaoyu?”
Upon hearing his stern inquiry, the assistant collected himself and shook his head: “No one from the Feng family is here, only Mr. Su, the assistant, is representing Mr. Feng at the press conference.”
Shi Yulin’s expression finally improved slightly. “Where is Su Jin now? Take me to him.”
…
“You’re overthinking it, Mr. Shi. Mr. Feng did intend to attend the press conference, but he had to deal with something last minute and couldn’t make it.”
Su, the assistant, wore gold-rimmed glasses and looked polite and courteous. When he heard Shi Yulin’s inquiry, he replied with a courteous smile, “To show our respect, Mr. Feng arranged for me to attend the press conference on his behalf.”
“You can rest assured that our relationship between our two families will not be affected by this.”
“Is that so? It must be quite serious then. Is it related to work?” Shi Yulin squinted, seemingly casually asking but actually closely watching Su’s expression. “After all, I understand Mr. Feng. He always keeps his personal and professional life separate and wouldn’t let personal matters interfere with work.”
Su pushed his glasses up and replied with a flawless smile, “There was a scheduled collaboration project with the other party but suddenly wanted to reschedule to meet Mr. Feng today so he had no choice. I hope Mr. Shi can understand.”
Su Jin’s words contained some truth. He didn’t care much; he just needed to confirm that Feng Yan didn’t intend to play with the Shi family.
So Shi Yulin retracted his scrutinizing gaze, a hint of a smile appeared on his lips, and his tone became more relaxed. “Of course, unexpected things can happen to anyone, so I understand.”
Su Jin also smiled at him and calmly sat back down.
Meanwhile, in the hospital corridor…
“My concussion has healed, and she only had a minor bone fracture, not even needing a cast. How is it possible that she’s still not recovered?” Feng Jingxu followed behind, muttering suspiciously, staring at the back of Feng Yan, who was pushing Sheng Xia. He couldn’t help but ask, “You don’t really believe her, do you? Sheng Xia might be faking it!”
Earlier, after the doctor had reviewed the CT scan results and conducted an examination on Sheng Xia, it was confirmed that her recovery was good enough to start trying leg muscle exercises.
However, as Sheng Xia was being supported by Feng Yan and attempting to lift her leg under the doctor’s guidance, she began to gasp with even the slightest movement. Before long, she unknowingly leaned her whole body on Feng Yan, her face pale and pitiful, as if she was about to faint.
Feng Jingxu couldn’t help but roll his eyes at her, intending to say she was faking it, but seeing her sweating and looking pale and weak, he swallowed his mocking words.
“I-I can’t do it anymore. I’m really about to faint.” She tugged at Feng Yan’s sleeve, her lips slightly white, calling out to him plaintively, “Husband…”
Feng Yan remained unchanged, as if he didn’t feel Sheng Xia’s weight. One hand supported her body, while the other gently patted her back, soothingly saying, “Can you hold on a little longer, Xia Xia?”
Sheng Xia stared at him in disbelief. “I’m like this, and you still want me to hold on? Are you a beast?”
The doctor, who had just said he was tired, picked up his cup and took a sip of water. Hearing the conversation between the couple, he almost sprayed it out but manage indured it, but still he coughed a few times.
The commotion from his side immediately drew the attention of the three. He put down the cup somewhat embarrassedly and could only helplessly say, “Miss Sheng’s constitution is still too weak. When you go back, follow my method to strengthen your exercise, take good care of your body, and get more sun to supplement your nutrition.”
Seeing that the patient still didn’t react, both father and son sighed in relief at the same time. The doctor was speechless and amused, unable to help but remind them, “Perhaps there are some invisible injuries from the previous accident. If possible, come back for another check-up in a month.”
“Okay, thank you, doctor.”
Familiar with the routine, Feng Yan skillfully carried Sheng Xia back to the wheelchair, thanked the doctor warmly, and then pushed her straight out of the door.
Left behind, Feng Jingxu wondered, “Are you forgetting that I’m still here?”
He followed outside.
He silently followed them out, pondering over it. It just didn’t seem right. He couldn’t help but walk up beside Feng Yan and continue murmuring, “Back at the amusement park, when she was driving those two-wheeled things so fast, she didn’t seem weak at all. How can she be so weak now?”
Feng Yan’s lips lifted slightly, his voice calm. “Since the doctor also said that Xia Xia’s constitution is weak, she just needs to rest more. Fortunately, Xia Xia’s legs have recovered almost completely, right?”
No way, his dad is so easily fooled?
Feng Jingxu always felt that something was off. He was about to remind him not to be fooled, but suddenly he thought of something. A flash of realization struck him. “Wait a minute, Sheng Xia, are you trying to avoid the tasks in the second phase of the program by pretending to be sick again?”
Under the sharp gaze of his elder son, Sheng Xia’s eyelashes fluttered lightly, and she looked up with an innocent expression.
She pursed her pale pink lips and said in a helpless tone, “But, I really feel weak and can’t move. Xiaoxu, are you so suspicious because you think I’m a burden to you, so you don’t want to take care of me at all?”
Feng Jingxu: “…Don’t twist my words.”
“I, I didn’t plan on taking care of you anyway. Whether you’re a burden or not, what does it have to do with me?”
He then turned his head and muttered quietly, not knowing if he was speaking for Sheng Xia or just for himself.
Sheng Xia suddenly felt like she was being stabbed in the heart, clutching her chest as if she was about to faint in the wheelchair. “I knew Xiaoxu doesn’t like being close to Mom. Now he even despises me, thinking I’ll have to stay in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.”
She lamented in a tone of sadness and sorrow, “Ah, although my body is still here, my heart is already dead! How terrible this is!”
Feng Jingxu, surrounded by the subtle looks of those around him, thought to himself: If he is guilty, let the law punish him, not subject him to this baptism of shame on the spot!
Seeing his eldest son’s scalp go numb with his face full of despair, Feng Yan, although outwardly calm, couldn’t help but want to laugh.
It’s strange to say that he didn’t use to smile much before, or rather, he didn’t show much expression.
But he didn’t know when it started. In front of Sheng Xia, he couldn’t help but want to laugh. It’s like she brought out his mischievous side, making him unconsciously reveal his naughty thoughts.
It seems kind of scary.
As he was caught between his son’s unconscious plea for help and Sheng Xia’s seemingly pitiful gaze, the experienced Feng Yan hesitated slightly and then said casually, “Since Xia Xia is feeling so uncomfortable, why don’t we go home and rest now?”
He looked regretful. “It’s a pity about the reservation I had at Chu Gui Yuan. You know, they only have ten tables per day, so Xia Xia might not be able to enjoy the food there…”
Sheng Xia suddenly sat up, her face serious. “You know, something even scarier than before just happened.”
“Because my heart is dead, but my mouth isn’t. It can still eat, which is really terrifying!”
