Chapter 14: Su Gang Visits the Tang Family with His Daughter
After hesitating for a moment, Su Gang went to his daughter’s study to find a set of math mock exam papers.
Su Xiaoli sat down at the study desk.
She worked through the questions at an incredibly fast pace!
In less than half an hour, she had finished all the problems.
“Dad, I’m going to eat! Can you check this for me?” Su Xiaoli said before leaving the study.
With a mixture of anxiety, Su Gang began to mark the paper his daughter had completed.
In the end, he wrote the number 150 at the top right corner of the first Part.
Then he approached Su Xiaoli.
Su Xiaoli was enjoying her meal.
“Xiaoli, what’s going on? Is this really the result of Tang Feng’s tutoring?” Su Gang still couldn’t believe it.
“Of course, it’s true. Dad, Tang Feng has been hiding his strength all these years. If he hadn’t revealed it, we probably wouldn’t have known until the college entrance exam results came out,” Su Xiaoli responded.
“I have to say, this kid is even better than his dad! Since you can score full marks in your math test, it must be even easier for him, right?” Su Gang’s eyes lit up at this realization.
“Definitely. If nothing goes wrong, Tang Feng is very likely to become the top scorer in Dongshan Province,” Su Xiaoli said with a smile.
“What? The top scorer?” Su Gang’s voice rose an octave.
“Dad, can you not overreact?” Su Xiaoli gave him a look.
“We’ll go to the Tang’s after dinner,” Su Gang decided.
“If you insist on going, I can’t stop you. But you have to promise not to start any conflicts with Uncle Tang and his wife,” Su Xiaoli instructed him.
“Don’t worry! With Tang Feng being so outstanding now, how could I possibly argue with the Tang’s? I’m counting on him to continue tutoring you well,” Su Gang readily agreed.
After dinner, Su Gang took out two bottles of Maotai and two packs of Zhonghua cigarettes from the cabinet, preparing them as gifts.
Soon, they arrived at the entrance of the supermarket run by the Tang family.
“Old Tang!” Su Gang called out.
Tang Feng’s father, Tang Long, came out of the supermarket.
“What brings you here today?” Tang Long was surprised to see him.
“Cut the chit-chat, close up shop! Take me to your house for a bit,” Su Gang urged.
“Can’t we talk here? It’s rush hour, and people are coming to the supermarket,” Tang Long’s expression changed slightly.
“No!” Su Gang shook his head, “I want to go to your house and have a chat with little Feng.”
“What do you need to talk to my son about?” Tang Long became wary.
“Don’t be nervous. He’s been tutoring my Xiaoli these past few days, and I want to thank him in person,” Su Gang explained.
“Is that all?” Tang Long was skeptical.
“Of course! Honestly, I used to look down on little Feng, not wanting Xiaoli to get too close to him. But now…” Su Gang trailed off, seemingly embarrassed.
“Now that you see how outstanding my son is, are you feeling a bit jealous?” Tang Long teased.
“Not jealous. My Xiaoli is also very outstanding. Anyway, let’s not stand here; close up and let’s go to your house to talk,” Su Gang insisted.
“Are you making a scene here, Old Su?” Tang’s mother came out of the supermarket.
“You’re here too! I came today especially to thank little Feng! Can’t you two be a bit supportive?” Su Gang was almost at his wit’s end.
“Uncle, Auntie, I’m really sorry. Today, when Tang Feng was sending me home, my dad saw us. I told him the truth about studying at your house these past few days, and he even called our class teacher,” Su Xiaoli said, feeling quite embarrassed.
“It’s okay,” Tang Feng’s mother waved her hand, “We’re all old colleagues. Since you’re here, we can’t ignore you. Let’s go inside and talk.”
Seeing his wife’s response, Tang Long closed the supermarket and led everyone to their home.
Tang Feng was watching TV.
Hearing noise outside, he quickly got up to open the door.
He saw his parents with Su Gang and his daughter.
“Uncle Su!” Tang Feng greeted him.
He felt a bit nervous inside.
After all, Su Gang rarely visited their home.
Su Gang walked in, casually placing the Maotai and Zhonghua on the coffee table.
“You all chat, I’ll go cook,” Tang Feng’s mother said before heading to the kitchen.
Tang Long invited Su Gang to sit on the sofa.
Tang Feng and Su Xiaoli exchanged glances and sat down as well.
“Little Feng, Xiaoli just told me that she has been studying at your place these days. At first, I didn’t believe it until I confirmed it with your class teacher. I heard that your academic performance is very good now?” Su Gang observed Tang Feng as he asked.
“It’s okay,” Tang Feng responded.
“How did you improve your grades so much all of a sudden? Or have you been hiding your abilities, planning to make a big splash at the exam?” Su Gang continued to inquire.
After thinking for a moment, Tang Feng said, “I did want to make a big splash.”
“You’re really something, being able to keep it a secret for so long! Old Tang, you’ve raised a good son!” Su Gang spoke with a hint of admiration.
Su Gang knew well that the biggest flaw in young people is their love to show off. No matter what achievements they make, they tend to reveal them inadvertently, seeking admiration from others.
It’s rare to find young people who can keep their composure.
In his eyes, not only could Tang Feng keep his cool, but he did so for three years.
This young man’s future achievements were not to be underestimated.
Tang Long’s face was filled with smiles.
All this time, Tang Feng’s academic performance had been mediocre, and he had little hope.
As long as his son grew up healthy and found a job after high school, that was enough. At worst, he could help out in the supermarket and still have a livelihood.
But he never expected his son had been holding back a big move.
For him, it was an enormous surprise.
“You’re the same, having raised such a good daughter!” Tang Long looked at Su Xiaoli and smiled happily.
“Alright! Let’s not praise each other here. Little Feng, you’ve been tutoring my Xiaoli, and I’m truly grateful. Rest assured, I won’t let you down. After the college entrance exam results are out, I’ll give you a big gift,” Su Gang promised generously.
