Chapter 33: Impossible to Guard Against

Her head was spinning, and Ji Xueli couldn’t help but curse silently. Who the hell would suddenly stop in the middle of the road while driving?

Instinctively, she wanted to lift her head and get up to see who dared stop like that, but then she realized she was being held and protected in someone’s arms.

Ji Xueli slowly looked up and met a pair of beautiful eyes — it was Duan Qingyu. So it was him who had pulled her back just now, stopping her from being thrown forward.

Looks like the male lead still has some lingering feelings for her. She smiled sincerely. “Thanks.”

“No need. But how long do you plan on lying there?” Duan Qingyu looked down at her, his voice deliberately teasing.

“I nearly got a concussion just now. Give me a moment to adjust…” Ji Xueli shamelessly responded.

Duan Qingyu flicked her forehead lightly with his fingers, looking lazily at her. “A concussion, huh? Then do you still recognize the people outside?”

Hearing that, Ji Xueli looked out the window. At some point, Chengdu had already gotten out of the car. The people from the black car in front had also gotten out.

It was Ji Yanzhou and Xie Yujun.

“Oh no, they’re not gonna start a fight, are they?” Ji Xueli immediately sat up and pressed against the window to watch them.

Duan Qingyu chuckled lightly at her reaction. “Why don’t you go down and play mediator?”

“You go. What if Chengdu can’t handle a 1v2?” Ji Xueli looked at him.

She had just argued with Ji Yanzhou recently, so seeing him now didn’t exactly bring up any pleasant feelings. She didn’t really want to face him.

“Sure. Then stay here and behave.” Duan Qingyu smiled, his face like a peach blossom — dazzling and captivating — but there was a look that suggested he was definitely up to something…

Ji Xueli could sense he was planning something the moment he agreed so easily.

“Actually, let’s go down together.” Ji Xueli immediately changed her tune and grabbed his wrist.

Duan Qingyu glanced down at her hand on his wrist, raised an eyebrow, and said, “Let’s go.”

“It’s you. But why did you stop so suddenly?” Chengdu recognized Ji Yanzhou and didn’t bother hiding his displeasure.

“Sorry, the car had a sudden issue,” Xie Yujun replied calmly.

Ji Yanzhou looked at the bruise on Chengdu’s forehead and pulled out his phone. “Let’s go to the hospital. I’ll take responsibility.”

“No need, I’ve got things to do.” They’d grown up together after all, so Chengdu didn’t want to say anything too harsh and waved it off.

Ji Yanzhou frowned, still feeling like he should make it up to him. Just as he was about to speak, a male voice came from behind: “Chengdu, what happened?”

They looked over. It was Duan Qingyu. And clearly, someone was holding his wrist and walking beside him.

The edge of a pink dress and the glint of high heels suggested she was a classy and refined woman.

“You might as well have stayed in the car,” Duan Qingyu said in a low voice.

“I just saw him and got annoyed,” Ji Xueli muttered.

“It’s fine. Ji Yanzhou’s car just broke down,” Chengdu explained.

“Apologies, President Duan,” Xie Yujun said upon seeing who it was.

Ji Yanzhou, however, kept his eyes locked on the person behind Duan Qingyu, his hand unconsciously clenching.

“If your car’s broken, how about we give you a ride?” Duan Qingyu said with a smile.

Ji Xueli’s eyes widened and she poked him in the waist, whispering, “Are you that free? We were supposed to go eat.”

At her words, Duan Qingyu’s eyes gleamed with amusement, and he pretended to be helpless. “Oh, Xueli says we have dinner plans. Guess we won’t be giving a ride then.”

Ji Xueli clenched her teeth in frustration. She knew it! He was definitely plotting something again — impossible to guard against, really.

Ji Yanzhou’s gaze remained locked on her.

“Miss Ji?” Xie Yujun glanced at Ji Yanzhou, then looked toward the person behind Duan Qingyu. She thought maybe it was another of his mysterious dates, someone who didn’t want to show their face…

“Not convenient, we’re going to be late,” Ji Xueli said stiffly, stepping out from behind Duan Qingyu with a calm expression.

It was her. Ji Yanzhou stared, his jaw tight with suppressed anger. Why was it that every time they met, she was always with him?

“We’re gonna be late. If you feel bad, then introduce me to Guan Ru,” Chengdu waved at Ji Yanzhou, raising his eyebrows playfully.

Ji Xueli didn’t bother with a smile. She pulled Duan Qingyu back toward the car.

Duan Qingyu only looked away from Ji Yanzhou the moment he turned around. His smile deepened.

This kind of feeling… must be awful.

He’d experienced it before.

So now, why not see for himself — is she really faking it, or is it… real?

Duan Qingyu looked down at the girl tugging him forward.
