Chapter 49 : Blessings
With so many guests coming today, Xiao Hechuan was very sensible, helping Jiang Sui with work, moving firewood, and running errands. When making the sweet potato flour earlier, he had also helped a lot, even turning the millstone, and was very obedient.
No one knew what Su Yanqing said to them in the room, but when Mother Xiao returned with two cabbages, Mr. Zeng took the initiative to find her.
“Mrs. Xiao, please stop busying yourself. My fellow apprentices came here specifically for your family today.”
Coming for their family? How could this be possible? Mother Xiao was confused.
Seeing that she didn’t understand, Mr. Zeng smiled and explained: “It’s a bit abrupt to say this, but I secretly inquired about your family’s affairs before and learned about your family’s situation in recent years. So, I told this to my nephew Lin Xu.”
“After Lin Xu learned about it, he wanted to do his best to repay your family’s kindness, so he asked me to write a letter to my teacher in Jeju Prefecture. After reading the letter, my teacher immediately sent a few of his favorite students to treat your youngest son Hechuan and your second daughter-in-law. Although I can’t guarantee that I can help, I want to give it a try.”
“They came today for this purpose. Please inform your daughter-in-law and get ready. My senior brother Qin specializes in treating infertility in women. He has helped many infertile women over the years and has made great achievements. Perhaps he can help ease your worries.
As for your youngest son Hechuan, my other two brothers are aware of him and have volunteered to come over to examine him. Is that acceptable?”
“OK, that’s great! What’s wrong with such a good thing?”
Mother Xiao burst into tears of gratitude. These two issues had been her greatest concerns. Now that Master Su had cared so much about their family and specially invited these famous doctors to come from far away to treat her daughter-in-law and son, how could she not be thankful?
This person is truly worth saving. Suisui is indeed far-sighted. Look, isn’t this blessing coming to them?
It’s not like Zhou hadn’t seen doctors before for her infertility problem, but the doctors they had consulted were incompetent and didn’t know the cause.
But seeing a good doctor would cost a lot of money, and their family didn’t have that much, so they had delayed seeking proper treatment.
A lot of money had been spent on Xiao Hechuan’s case, but no one could figure it out. Everyone said there was nothing they could do and that it was just fate.
Now, no matter whether it could be cured or not, they should still be grateful for the kindness shown.
“Oh, Mr. Zeng, thank you so much, both to you and Mr. Su. I don’t know how to thank you enough.”
“Why are you still talking about thank you? I’ve already said that this little bit of reward isn’t enough to repay Lin Xu’s kindness. This is just what we should do,” Mr. Zeng waved his hand and smiled generously, hands on his hips.
Mother Xiao nodded repeatedly, so happy she was at a loss for words. She went back to the kitchen, put down the cabbage, and immediately told Zhou the good news.
When Zhou heard that the elders were here specifically to treat her, she was stunned, perhaps so happy that she lost her senses.
It took her a moment to react, and her eyes immediately filled with tears as she cried with joy: “Really? Mom, are you joking with me?”
This huge stroke of luck had come out of nowhere and hit Zhou right in the face.
“Really? How could what Mr. Zeng personally told me be false? He also said they wanted to have Hechuan’s brain checked.”
Mother Xiao’s eyes narrowed into slits from her laughter. She paid special attention to the second half of Jiang Sui’s sentence, wanting to make Jiang Sui happy.
Jiang Sui knew that Xiao Hechuan would get better sooner or later, whether or not she saw him, but she still pretended to be very happy.
“That’s great, mother. This is such good news! Second sister-in-law and Hechuan are both looking forward to it. Those people are all Mr. Su’s favorite students. They must be very capable. They are not like those ordinary doctors from before. It seems that it won’t be long before you have a grandson to hold again.”
Jiang Sui’s words touched the hearts of Zhou and Mother Xiao, especially Zhou, who felt like she had finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel.
She had already started imagining what it would be like when she became pregnant.
It’s wonderful that she could now receive treatment without spending a penny, and the doctor treating her was someone highly respected.
She looked at Jiang Sui and suddenly began to understand why her mother-in-law always said she was a lucky star. If Jiang Sui hadn’t mentioned being bored that afternoon and gone to the mountain stream to pick wild apricots, she wouldn’t have formed such a great connection with Second Master Su, and she wouldn’t have received this benefit today.
Her husband was right, she should have stayed close to her fourth brother’s wife, and her luck would improve.
Xiao Lanlan watched and listened from the side, and was also happy, truly delighted from the bottom of her heart. At the same time, she developed a better impression of Su Yanqing.
Mr. Su is truly a kind person who knows how to be grateful.
With hope in her heart, Zhou worked even harder, her face always adorned with a smile.
She stewed two chickens, fried a few fish, and fried the smoked wild boar and roe deer meat they had at home. She also made tofu with the remaining soybeans, fried fresh cabbage, made two plates of eggs, and baked two plates of pancakes.
This is rural life. The food on the table was even more abundant than during Chinese New Year.
There were two tables in the yard, one for the elders and Mr. Zeng, and another for the servants.
The Xiao family kept some dishes for themselves and ate in the kitchen.
They really took out all the delicious food they had in the house.
Mr. Zeng noticed they hadn’t come to the table and invited them several times, but Mother Xiao refused each time:
“Mr. Zeng, I guess you brothers haven’t had a good chance to chat together for a while, so we won’t bother you. Look, we’ve kept the food on the table for ourselves, and we won’t let ourselves go hungry. Please don’t worry about us.”
Mr. Zeng had no choice but to look around and saw with his own eyes that the Xiao family members were all holding white rice in their hands, and there was meat and fish on the table. He gave up.
Otherwise, if they ate the delicious food and drank spicy drinks, while the host saved food for them and ate the lesser food, what would that say?
It was a happy day, so Mother Xiao decided that everyone should eat white rice.
White rice with chicken, fish, and bacon was simply delicious.
Goudan ate with gusto and finished three bowls of rice in a row.
He was a child, so no one scolded him, but the adults like Mother Xiao were worried there wouldn’t be enough rice for the guests. They didn’t eat their fill and only had a few bites before going back to eating steamed buns.
Mr. Zeng wanted to reminisce with several fellow apprentices, and since Su Yanqing had difficulty moving around, he had to stay in his room. So, Xiao Lanlan took on the task of bringing him food.
When she brought in the food, Su Yanqing was reading a medical book. He was lying there in a pure white silk nightgown, his black hair spilling over the pillow and partly resting on his shoulders.
Because the weather was a bit hot, he had loosened his collar slightly, revealing his fair and slender neck and a small part of his collarbone.
