Chapter 5 – Cursing Me to Die?
“Yang Tao, what do you mean by that? Are you cursing me to die?” Now that she knew this girl had been reborn, she had to be even more careful not to show a single crack in front of her.
Yang Tao looked at the fierce, aggressive Li Yiyi in front of her. She didn’t seem any different from before—still the same unreasonable and detestable person.
But then again, in her past life, at this very moment, Li Yiyi had clearly starved to death at home. It wasn’t until dusk that the Jiang family came over to check on the two grandchildren and discovered that their daughter-in-law had died in bed.
So why was it different this time? Not only had Li Yiyi not died, but she was now standing right in front of her.
“I didn’t—I wasn’t cursing you. You… You were supposed to be dead by now. How… how can this be?” Yang Tao said, flustered.
Hearing this, Li Yiyi was now certain that Yang Tao had truly been reborn.
“Heh, still cursing me, are you? Say one more word about me dying, and I swear I’ll tear that mouth of yours apart!” To act like her original self, Li Yiyi put her hands on her hips and shouted just like one of those shrews on TV.
“Stay away from me! I don’t have time to deal with a shrew like you. I don’t even know how Jiang Hong ended up with someone as lazy and greedy as you. You don’t deserve him one bit!” Yang Tao spat out the words quickly, then scrambled to her feet and ran off.
Li Yiyi watched her ridiculous fleeing figure and shouted with a laugh, “Don’t run! If you’ve got the guts, come back and say again how Jiang Hong doesn’t deserve me!”
But it seemed the original owner’s reputation was just too frightening. The moment she shouted, Yang Tao ran even faster and soon vanished without a trace.
The rest of the afternoon, Li Yiyi spent cleaning up the house.
By evening, she took out about two jin of instant zhajiang noodles from her supermarket space. After such a long, exhausting day, she really didn’t have the energy to cook from scratch.
Even though it was instant food, it tasted surprisingly good. The two little ones were having it for the first time and were quite pleased with their dinner. The siblings happily polished off their bowls.
After dinner, Li Yiyi boiled a big pot of hot water and gave the kids a proper bath.
That night, for the first time in a long while, the mother and her two children went to bed with full bellies.
They slept soundly, and the next morning, Li Yiyi cooked a pot of dried shrimp congee. The three of them ate until their bellies were round and full.
Li Yiyi felt relieved the kids were still young—they never questioned where the food came from.
But she knew this couldn’t go on forever. One day, someone would notice something was off. She had to find a way to start earning money soon. That way, at least she’d have an excuse for having food on the table.
After breakfast, she dressed the children in the worst clothes they had. As for herself, she used some cosmetics from her space supermarket to make herself up. By the time she stepped away from the mirror, her face looked even paler and sicklier than before.
One look and anyone would think she was seriously ill.
When she walked out of the house, the siblings sitting in the courtyard both froze when they saw her.
Li Yiyi reached out and patted their little heads with a smile. “Don’t be scared. Mommy’s fine. In a bit, I’m taking you to your grandparents’ place. You don’t need to be afraid. Just cry when the time comes. If you cry well, Mommy will give you candy when we get back.”
The moment the word “candy” came out, the siblings’ eyes lit up.
Soon, Li Yiyi led them out, locked the courtyard door, and started walking toward the village entrance.
Their figures leaving the village were quickly spotted by someone who then rushed to tell Jiang Mother, who was working in the fields.
“Sister Jiang! Guess who I just saw? Your younger daughter-in-law! That woman really has it easy. Doesn’t do a lick of work and now she’s even leaving the village with the two kids. I bet she’s going back to her family home.”
Jiang Mother looked up in the direction of the village entrance, a hint of worry in her eyes.
Meanwhile, it took Li Yiyi and the kids nearly an hour to walk to Lijia Village.
Just like in Jiangjia Village, the fields near Lijia’s entrance were also filled with people working.
The moment the mother and children entered the village, they were spotted by the locals.
“Li Dazhuang sure is lucky—his daughter married such a good husband. The son-in-law even sends money every month. Why couldn’t my Jinhua have such good fortune?”
Someone snorted coldly nearby. “Good fortune? Hah. I heard that Li Yiyi hasn’t worked a single day since marrying into the Jiang family. Just sits around the house all day. What kind of family can put up with a daughter-in-law like that? Give it a few years and I bet the Jiang family will send her right back here.”
Li Yiyi, unaware of the gossip in the fields, had already led the children to the Li family home.
As soon as she opened the courtyard gate, the smell of chicken droppings overwhelmed her. She almost threw up.
Sure enough, birds of a feather flock together—the original owner really was a perfect match for this family.
Taking a deep breath at the entrance, she held the children’s hands and slowly walked through the yard into the main hall.
She looked around but didn’t see anyone. So she headed to the bedrooms and sure enough, found Li Mother and Li Father lying inside.
Li Mother’s face lit up when she saw her daughter. She climbed off the bed, her shaky legs barely supporting her, and walked over with a delighted expression. “My daughter, you came to give us money, didn’t you? I knew you still had a conscience. After all we did to raise you, how could you bear to watch us starve?”
Li Yiyi wrinkled her nose at the sour, rancid smell of the room and took a step back in disgust. “You’re mistaken. I didn’t come to give you money. I came to take it back. Didn’t I tell you yesterday? I’m here to reclaim all the money I’ve given you over the years.”
Li Mother’s smile froze instantly. In the next second, her expression twisted as she pointed and cursed, “Ungrateful wretch! You really are a heartless creature! We raised you, and this is how you repay us?”
Li Yiyi brushed her pointing hand aside. “Are you done cursing? If you’re finished, then hand over the money. I don’t have time to waste here.”
Seeing that her daughter meant business, Li Mother instantly switched tactics. She collapsed to the ground, crying, “Oh, heavens! Open your eyes and look! How did I give birth to such an ungrateful child? If you’ve got any justice left, strike down this heartless girl right now!”
