Chapter 98 : Let her live a happy and carefree life
Mother Xiao was unusually serious, and she deliberately emphasized the word “only” when she spoke, stressing that no matter how high Xiao Hechuan climbed in the future, he would only be allowed to have Jiang Sui as his woman.
She stood by Jiang Sui unconditionally, and her words deeply moved Jiang Sui.
But matters of the heart cannot be forced, all she could do was leave the rest to fate and do her best.
Xiao Hechuan looked at Jiang Sui deeply, then nodded solemnly to Mother Xiao.
“Mom, I listen to you. In this life, Jiang Sui is my only one!”
Just because she saved all his relatives, Xiao Hechuan could never let her down.
Thinking about what happened in his previous life, Xiao Hechuan didn’t want to think about it anymore. In his past life, he was just like before he accidentally fell and became mentally impaired. Then, when the earthquake struck, his parents protect him, crushed under the collapsed mountain.
His three brothers, two sisters-in-law, and six-year-old nephew weren’t spared either and were left behind in the disaster because they didn’t evacuate in time.
His sister, whose leg was broken by a falling rock while escaping, lived the rest of her life in depression. She was criticized for her misfortune, and because she lost her leg, she locked herself in her room all day and refused to see anyone. Even though she struggled and eventually reached the top of the mountain, it couldn’t heal her heart. She died from illness and depression before reaching 30.
He was the only one who survived the disaster. He eventually returned to normal by chance.
All his family members were killed, leaving only him and his disabled sister. They fled to Jeju, surviving with great difficulty.
Many of the things that happened later were not what he had hoped for or wished for. Only he and Lanlan knew how heartbreaking the journey had been, how reality had beaten them down, and how humiliated they had suffered.
But all his lifelong regrets and resentment stemmed from this disaster. He lost his most precious family. He woke up from nightmares many times in the middle of the night, feeling helpless, unable to do anything but taste the sorrow and heartache alone.
It wasn’t until his sister died that he looked at the wealth, fame, and fortune he had worked so hard for and realized that all his efforts in life had been meaningless.
The reason he wanted to study hard and take the imperial examination was to give his family a better life, to fulfill his parents’ wishes, and to make the Xiao family one of scholars and literati, instead of continuing to toil in the fields like his ancestors.
In his previous life, he held a high government position, but he could only enjoy the honor alone. After Lanlan’s death, he became depressed, drowning his sorrows in alcohol. Soon after, he developed a heart disease. When he was dying, what he couldn’t let go of most was still the misfortune brought by this disaster, so much so that he died with his eyes open.
But unexpectedly, perhaps God had pity on him and gave him a chance to start over, allowing him to be reborn in his youth.
This time, his family were still alive. They had all escaped the disaster, and all of this was thanks to the girl Jiang Sui.
She was the one who saved their family and made up for his past regrets. Therefore, he, Xiao Hechuan, could never repay her for what he owed her in this life. The only thing he could do was to take good care of her and ensure she lived a happy and carefree life.
This time, he wanted his family to enjoy the good life they had been denied in the previous life.
Jiang Sui felt a little embarrassed when he looked at her. The deep meaning hidden in his eyes was too heavy. She couldn’t fully understand it, but she could sense that he was sincere toward her.
“I’m relieved when you say that. Now you’re well again, which can be considered a blessing in disguise. So, let’s kill a chicken and stew it today. We can all drink the hot chicken soup to replenish our energy.”
“Later, I will send two more to the old village chief and his family. The old village chief has helped our family a lot in the past. Now he’s sick, and the village chief is also seriously injured. With the village destroyed like this, there’s not much we can do. We can’t take care of others, but we must repay the old village chief’s kindness!”
Mother Xiao was a person who valued friendship and loyalty the most. She remembered everything that had happened, including who had been good to them and who hadn’t.
As they were talking, Father Xiao and the others got up. They had to go to the village to see if there was anything they could help with. When they came back, they saw that their son had already woken up, and they were overjoyed.
“Hechuan is awake!”
When Mother Xiao heard his voice, she quickly shared the good news.
“Old man, our Hechuan is fine!”
“I know. I’m not blind. He’s staring at me with his eyes wide open. How could I not see that he’s recovered?”
After a night, Father Xiao’s mood didn’t seem as low as yesterday.
“Oh, when I said he was cured, I meant his dementia is cured. It was a blessing in disguise that he hit his head, and when he woke up, he was normal again. From now on, our son is no longer a mentally ill child.”
This was undoubtedly a huge surprise for Father Xiao. He was stunned for a few seconds, then burst into laughter. He stepped forward and placed his hands on Xiao Hechuan’s shoulders, looking him up and down. His eyes turned red as he laughed.
“Hechuan, are you okay?”
Xiao Hechuan smiled and nodded. When he saw his father again, he almost couldn’t hold back his tears. The father in his memory was simple, hardworking, and down-to-earth. He had never done anything harmful in his life. He always taught his sons the duties of a human being.
“Dad, I’m really fine. Thank you for your hard work over the years!”
“Dad is not tired. Why should Dad be tired? I just wronged my son. After these years of being ridiculed, I know that you are ambitious and have great ideals. Now that you’re well, you should continue to work hard to realize your dreams!”
A father understands his son best, so he said this to him because he knew that Xiao Hechuan’s biggest dream in life was to pass the imperial examination and become an official.
When the brothers heard the noise, they squeezed in one after another and saw their father and fourth brother hugging each other. It was Lanlan who told them the good news.
The brothers were naturally very happy to hear that their younger brother had returned to normal and was no longer mentally impaired.
The brothers gathered together, each with a happy smile on their face.
Big brother Xiao Qin punched him on the shoulder and said with a smile.
“Good boy, you’re finally well. You can’t be lazy anymore!”
This was a joke, because Xiao Hechuan had been mentally impaired before, and his family had always taken care of him like a child. They didn’t let him go up the mountain to chop wood, nor did they let him work in the fields. He was treated the same as Goudan. Of course, he was only asked to help out occasionally when needed.
Xiao Hechuan’s return to normal was undoubtedly the best comfort for the Xiao family, who had just lost their home. Mother Xiao killed an old hen on the spot and made soup.
