Chapter 8: Car Accident
Luo Tiancheng, feeling guilty as a thief, broke into a cold sweat!
“Damn, did he figure something out? Should I answer?”
After hesitating for a few seconds, Luo Tiancheng decided to pick up the call, pretending to be half-asleep, his voice muffled as he asked, “Hello? Brother He?”
The voice on the other end was calm, asking, “Are you sleeping?”
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“Sorry to bother you. It’s just…”
“…”
There was a moment of silence between them before He Yinhui asked, “Are you asleep?”
Luo Tiancheng deliberately slurred his words, “No, no, but I’m almost there.”
“Actually, it’s nothing major. I must have misread a message. Go back to sleep, sorry for disturbing you.”
“Oh, okay, you should get some sleep too.”
“Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
After hanging up, Luo Tiancheng let out a long sigh of relief, “Thank goodness, he didn’t suspect me.”
Meanwhile, He Yinhui was berating himself, “He Yinhui, He Yinhui, why do you keep dreaming about someone kissing you? Are you that desperate? It’s bad enough that you’re having these dreams, but now you’re bothering others too?”
He paused, then muttered to himself, “If only he had really helped me avoid meeting Xie Mingming, how great that would have been…”
…
Luo Tiancheng had a rough night and didn’t sleep well. During the day, he received a notice about a court hearing.
He didn’t want to deal with his parents’ issues at all, as they had disappointed him too many times. Gamblers never change, and they’re safest in prison.
But no matter how much he didn’t want to get involved, he still had to deliver some documents.
After leaving the courthouse, Luo Tiancheng was walking to the subway station when suddenly a speeding car came from behind and hit him, sending him flying five or six meters!
Fortunately, there were traffic police at the intersection nearby, and they immediately rushed him to the hospital.
Luo Tiancheng was knocked unconscious and only woke up to find one of his legs in a cast.
He had some minor abrasions and a bit of pain, but his head didn’t seem to have been hit, as it didn’t hurt.
When the nurse saw he was awake, she quickly called the doctor and the police.
The doctor was tall, about 190 cm, wearing glasses, with very long eyelashes, slim, and with long fingers. As he wrote something down, he said, “You were in a car accident and were unconscious for seven hours. Your right leg has a fracture, and we’ve put it in a cast. The rest of the injuries are just abrasions and not serious. Are you feeling any discomfort now?”
Luo Tiancheng replied, “Just a little pain from the abrasions, but otherwise, I think I’m fine. By the way, doctor, why did I pass out? Did I hit my head?”
“No, there’s no head injury, and the surveillance footage from the intersection shows your head wasn’t hit. But your blood test showed very low blood sugar, which likely caused you to faint. You need to improve your nutrition, eat more meat, and get more sleep.”
“Oh… thank you.”
Since moving recently, Luo Tiancheng had been surviving on instant noodles, so his nutrition was naturally lacking. To do more live streams, he often stayed up late, and his sleep was insufficient.
This hard-earned extension of his lifespan still wasn’t enough to withstand the exhaustion of working like a beast of burden.
The doctor told the police, “He’s temporarily out of danger, you can talk to him now. I’ll go and write up the report.”
The police shook hands with him, “Alright, thank you, Doctor Qin.”
Doctor Qin? Luo Tiancheng suddenly remembered that there was a task involving an emergency room doctor named Qin Yue. Could it be him? Does this app have some kind of future-predicting function?
The police sat down next to him and asked, “Your name is Luo Tiancheng, right?”
“Yes.”
“We found your ID on you, so we know your name. Here’s the situation: the driver who hit you was drunk today, so he’s fully responsible for the accident. His family has already covered your medical expenses. As for lost wages and other compensations, they will make up for it later.”
“…Oh…”
“The doctor said you need to stay in the hospital for observation for two days. In your current condition, it’s not convenient for you to be alone. You should contact your family or friends to come and stay with you.”
Luo Tiancheng remained silent for a while, then said, “Thank you, officer. I can take care of myself. Even if one leg is out of commission, I still have the other one. I can manage with a hopping walk.”
“…Can’t you find anyone suitable to help? How about hiring a caregiver?”
Luo Tiancheng forced a bitter smile, “I’m embarrassed to say this, but my financial situation isn’t great. I can’t afford a caregiver.”
“This…”
A nurse nearby, feeling sorry for him, said, “It’s okay if you can’t afford a caregiver. We can help you. However, we don’t have male nurses here, so for things like going to the restroom, you’ll have to use a single crutch and take it slow. As for meals, you can order takeout on your phone. Our hospital cafeteria offers delivery service without any extra fees.”
“Thank you.”
The officer sighed and said, “Here’s my contact information. When you’re discharged, I’ll bring the driver’s family to sign the compensation agreement with you. For now, rest well and focus on recovering.”
“Alright.”
After the officer left, Luo Tiancheng wondered if this Dr. Qin was indeed Qin Yue.
The emergency room doctors were extremely busy, leaving little opportunity for conversation.
A nurse lent him a charger, and for the rest of the time, he could only scroll through his phone.
Before the end of her shift, Dr. Qin came to check on him again: “Are you sure there’s no discomfort anywhere else on your body?”
Luo Tiancheng nodded.
His gaze fixed on the doctor’s name tag: it was indeed Qin Yue! This app is truly amazing!
“Since everything seems fine, we’ll transfer you to the inpatient ward tonight. The emergency room is short on beds and not as quiet as the inpatient ward.”
“Oh, okay.”
“…Are you sure there’s no one who can stay with you?”
Luo Tiancheng looked slightly uneasy and whispered, “It’s fine, I can manage on my own.”
Qin Yue glanced at him, handed him a business card, and said, “I live nearby. If you suddenly feel unwell, give me a call.”
“Alright, thank you.”
After Qin Yue left, it was Luo Tiancheng’s turn to sigh.
He looked at the phone he had found and thought: Can’t your tasks be more focused? Why are they spread across three people?
“Life is so hard…”
After dinner, he was transferred to the inpatient ward.
Bored out of his mind, Luo Tiancheng downloaded two small games to play.
Around 10 PM, his phone rang again. It was He Yinhui calling.
“Hello? Brother He?”
“Don’t call me ‘brother.’ I’m only a year older than you.”
“You’re still my elder brother.”
“Why didn’t you log into the Game today? Are you mad at me? Sorry, I was half-asleep last night and ended up calling you.”
Luo Tiancheng hurriedly explained, “No, no, it’s not because of that. I… I had a bit of bad luck today. I got hit by a drunk driver.”
“What? Are you okay? How are you? Where are you now?”
“My leg is fractured, and I’m lying in the hospital. The doctor said I need to stay for two days.”
“Which hospital are you in?”
“…Ah, you don’t need to come see me. You have your livestream to do…”
“I can spare a few hours from my livestream. Tell me, where are you?”
“It’s almost 10:30 now, let’s talk about it tomorrow.”
“…You’re right, I’ll come see you tomorrow. Which hospital are you in?”
“Thanks for your concern. I’m on the 16th floor of the inpatient department at the city hospital.”
“Alright, get some rest early. I won’t disturb you anymore.”
“Thank you…”
“What are you thanking me for? Goodnight.”
“Goodnight.”
After hanging up the phone, Luo Tiancheng smiled—just hearing his voice made him happy.
…
When Qin Yue returned home, he turned on his computer and opened a photo from a folder. It was an image of Luo Tiancheng’s tragic death.
“Could it just be a coincidence that they look so similar?”
