Chapter 437: They Came Looking for Us
“Hey, how can I not be worried? She’s been working with her husband outside for over a year now, and every time we ask the in-laws, they say they’re doing fine. But I’m still worried inside,” said Jiang’s father with concern.
“Don’t worry, Dad. I’ll have someone keep checking on little sister and her husband. If there’s any news, I’ll let you know right away.”
After discussing the matter, Jiang Hong returned to his room.
Li Yiyi, sitting on the bed reading, noticed how long it had taken him to enter. She recalled that Jiang’s father had stopped him when she entered the room earlier.
“What did Dad want to ask you?” She put down her book, curious.
Jiang Hong took off his coat, climbed onto the bed, and hugged her before answering, “Dad asked about little sister.”
Hearing the mention of Jiang Huijing, Li Yiyi’s mood soured.
“What does it matter if you find out? She’s with her husband, working outside. Even if you find out something, they might not appreciate it.” She said this because, a few years ago, when Jiang Huijing had returned to her parents’ house talking about domestic abuse, the Jiang family had gone to help her seek justice. In the end, instead of being grateful for their support, she had blamed them.
“There’s nothing we can do. She’s still my sister. Even though Mom and Dad keep saying they won’t care about her, she’s still their daughter.” Jiang Hong whispered as he hugged his wife.
Soon, Li Yiyi felt that when it came to certain people, it was best not to bring them up—because once they did, things would happen quickly.
A couple of days later, as usual, she was riding her bicycle home after work. When she arrived at the gate of the military compound, the guard stopped her.
“Sister-in-law, there are two people in the guardhouse saying they’re your relatives. They said they came to find you.” The guard informed her.
Hearing this, Li Yiyi quickly put down her bicycle and followed him into the guardhouse.
Inside, there was a man and a woman half-asleep.
“Wake up, someone’s here to see you.” The guard gently nudged them.
The man and woman woke up, looking dazed for a moment.
Quickly, the woman recognized Li Yiyi standing in the guardhouse. She got up and walked over, enthusiastically taking her hand and calling out, “Third sister-in-law, we finally found you!”
Li Yiyi stared at her face for a while, still not recognizing her. “Who are you?”
The woman’s face froze as she heard the question.
“No, third sister-in-law, don’t you remember me? I’m Huijing, Jiang Huijing. How could you not recognize me?” Jiang Huijing asked, her voice full of emotion.
Hearing that name, Li Yiyi immediately understood who she was and recalled her.
“How did you end up here?”
She looked at the couple, and they looked like they had been rummaging through trash. They were dirty, with messy hair.
“We heard that my parents came to visit you and Third Brother, so we came to see Dad and Mom,” Jiang Huijing said, glancing at her husband and looking around nervously.
Li Yiyi saw her insincere manner and sneered, “I hope you really came to see Dad and Mom.”
“Third sister-in-law, Huijing and I haven’t had a proper meal for several days on the train. Do you have any food? Can you take us in for a bit?” Wang Fuguo, with a flattering smile, asked Li Yiyi.
Li Yiyi glanced at the couple. By now, it was too late to send them away.
She decided to let them come in and have a meal. As for where they would stay, they would figure it out when Jiang Hong came back.
“Comrade, they’re relatives from the Jiang family. I’ll register them,” she told the guard.
The guard immediately handed her the registration book.
After she registered their names and the reason for their visit, she led them toward the family quarters.
Once they entered the military compound, Wang Fuguo was in awe, his eyes wide. The place was huge, and the nearby buildings looked solemn, giving him a sense of safety.
“Sister-in-law, I didn’t expect Third Brother’s workplace to be this big.” Wang Fuguo smiled happily at Li Yiyi after admiring the surroundings.
Li Yiyi smiled faintly and reminded them, “This is a military compound. There are areas we’re not allowed to go. Once you’re inside, don’t ask too many questions, don’t look around too much, and don’t wander. If anything happens, neither I nor your brother can protect you.”
She felt it was better to warn them in advance to prevent any potential trouble.
Wang Fuguo continued grinning, “Sister-in-law, don’t worry, we won’t run around.”
Li Yiyi said nothing more and led them towards the family quarters.
After a few minutes, they arrived at the Jiang family home.
As soon as they reached the door, the delicious smell of food wafted toward them.
Having been hungry for days, Wang Fuguo and Jiang Huijing instinctively clutched their stomachs, afraid of making embarrassing noises.
Li Yiyi noticed their little gesture but didn’t comment.
She parked her bicycle in the yard, and the sounds inside quickly reached the ears of the two children, who were doing homework in the living room. Moments later, the two of them ran out.
“Mom, you’re back from work!” The two siblings ran out from the living room, each hugging one of her legs and acting cute.
Li Yiyi lovingly patted their little heads. “Did you finish your homework?”
“I finished mine, but my little brother hasn’t finished. He always does this—he works for a bit and then plays, and now he still hasn’t finished.” Jiang Yueyue said with a look of disdain at her brother.
Jiang Zhanpeng, caught by his sister’s complaint, quickly apologized, “Mom, I promise, next time I’ll do my homework properly.”
“Third sister-in-law, these must be Xiao Bao and Yueyue, right? I haven’t seen them in a few years, and they’ve grown so tall!” A voice, full of flattery, interrupted Li Yiyi before she could reply.
Only then did the two kids realize there was a man and a woman behind their mother.
But when they looked at their faces, they didn’t recognize them.
“Mom, who are they? What are they doing here?” Jiang Zhanpeng tugged at the hem of Li Yiyi’s clothes and whispered, asking her to bend down, then spoke in a low voice.
Although he whispered, Jiang Huijing heard him clearly.
“This child, how can you not recognize your little aunt? This is your little uncle, quickly greet them!” Jiang Huijing said, looking at him with some displeasure.
