Chapter 21
Bai Yan left Meng Hechuan, who was still in a daze, and went backstage in high heels.
The band members of the art class had just received the news that a girl had been temporarily tricked by Xu Qingqing.
I have to perform on stage temporarily.
People who usually flatter Xu Qingqing will naturally ignore Bai Yan.
Several little girls held hands, hugged their accordions and trumpets, and ran after Zhihua.
When Bai Yan got around to the back, only some uncommon musical instruments were left.
The girl playing the erhu had long been fed up with Xu Qingqing’s usual ladylike behavior. She looked at Bai Yan with sympathy and asked, “Comrade, do you want to sing or dance? We will try our best to accommodate you. It’s just that… the remaining instruments don’t seem to sound that good now.”
Her eyes darted among the musical instruments.
Currently the only instruments left are the erhu, flute, zhongruan and suona.
After a moment, she asked in surprise: “There is a drum set? Does anyone know how to play it?”
A boy with short hair raised his hand shyly, “I can play the drums, but the monitor usually says that the drum set doesn’t match her style, so she rarely lets us use the drum set.”
“Very good!”
Bai Yan knew what was going on. She looked at the members of the musical instrument class in front of her and quickly found paper and pen.
He quickly wrote down the notes. “I want to sing this song. I think everyone has heard of it. The tune is probably like this…”
Bai Yan patiently discussed the music score with the team members. Several team members who had volunteered to stay and accompany Bai Yan just because they couldn’t stand Xu Qingqing’s behavior, the expressions on their faces changed from worry at the beginning to expectation.
“This song is very popular in Hong Kong. I’ve only heard it on the radio, and it’s never been played live!”
“Comrade Xiaobai helped compose the music for each of our instruments, didn’t he? I didn’t expect to have this luck again. I can show off my skills!”
The girl who plays the erhu is called Su Lin.
She excitedly played a series of notes on the erhu. “Usually the monitor only lets those who flatter her to perform on stage. Today we have the chance! Give them a good compliment and let others know our strength!”
Bai Yan looked at the team members in front of her with a smile. She was really lucky!
Xu Qingqing wanted to intimidate her, but her plan went wrong.
She’s a woman who can even survive a plane crash!
It’s just a performance. How could Bai Yan, who has been among the top three singers in the school since childhood, be afraid?
…
The curtain moved slightly, and the voices from the audience suddenly became quieter.
Xu Qingqing and Zhihua exchanged glances.
She had just explained that all the musical instruments commonly used by the team had been taken away.
All that was left were some drums that didn’t match the song and dance and some suonas that sounded like funeral processions.
No matter whether Bai Yan is singing or dancing, without the accompaniment, it would be a pantomime.
It’s really going to make people laugh.
The host walked slowly to the center of the stage and announced, “The next performance will be performed by the new member of the brigade, Comrade Bai Yan, who will perform a song, ‘Red Sun’!”
Everyone exclaimed quietly, and even Meng Hechuan couldn’t help but look up at the stage.
In the 1980s, popular music in the inland areas was just beginning to sprout.
But due to the lack of information, most young people still listen to red songs or workers’ songs.
Very few people have the opportunity to hear rock music.
The song “Red Sun” was sung by a young singer from Hong Kong Island. It became popular throughout Hong Kong as soon as the album was released.
Young people in the inland areas heard about it later on the radio.
The cheerful tone and fresh rock music style attracted young people to follow suit.
Even though everyone likes it, there are geographical and historical reasons.
Very few people have the opportunity to hear this song sung live.
While everyone was still in a daze, a sharp suona sound suddenly rang out.
The tone of the suona was so overbearing that it penetrated into everyone’s ears everywhere and grabbed everyone’s attention.
The lights on the stage were turned on at the same time, shining brightly on the four people standing together in the center of the stage.
Su Lin skillfully played the erhu. The originally melodious and low tone collided with the cheerful tune of “Red Sun”, and there was a different kind of madness.
After the prelude ended, Bai Yan, who was standing in the middle, held the zhongruan and took a step forward happily.
As everyone exclaimed, his onion-like fingers continuously transformed the notes of the zhongruan into the sound of an electric guitar.
She looked at him with a daring gaze, and raised her eyebrows provocatively at Meng Hechuan, who was also in a daze in the audience.
Unexpected?
When Bai Yan was a child, she was forced by her mother to learn the zhongruan for six years.
At first I found it boring and didn’t want to learn.
But with the revival of folk music, Bai Yan also learned on the Internet how to play folk instruments to produce rock tones in her spare time.
Her playing skills were not good enough to compete in professional competitions, but they were more than enough to scare the “uninformed” comrades of the 1980s.
There was another round of intense drumbeats, and everyone looked up.
A boy with a crew cut and freckles pursed his lips and manipulated the drumsticks skillfully in his hands, bringing out pleasant rhythms again and again.
As the drum set joined in, Bai Yan grabbed the microphone, put the zhongruan behind her, and led the audience to clap and sing:
“Even if fate is displaced
Even if fate is tortuous and bizarre
Even if fate threatens you
Life is boring
Don’t cry, don’t be sad
Should not be abandoned
I wish to be with you forever”

The erhu and suona are truly the king of musical instruments. Once their tunes come out, they take control of the situation.
Normally, Xu Qingqing dislikes the suona’s heavy and sharp tone.
But how could she know that in the 21st century, this kind of folk rock music is the coolest.
In addition to middle-aged and elderly people like Lu Zhenhua and Dean Hu, there were also more young soldiers and foreign teachers at the welcome party.
Once the atmosphere is hyped up, the excitement flowing in the blood of young people is immediately ignited.
Everyone clapped their hands to Bai Yan’s rhythm.
Although they could not understand or sing the Cantonese lyrics of “Red Sun”, many of them still hummed along with Bai Yan’s leading.
The originally quiet and somewhat boring welcome party turned into a large-scale disco scene.
The comrade in charge of lighting on the scene questioned Lu Zhenhua with his eyes, and after getting his approval, he directly turned on the magic ball light.
The flashing colored lights directly pushed the atmosphere of the scene to a climax.
Lu Zhenhua and President Hu smiled at each other, their eyes full of indulgence towards the young people’s liveliness.
The foreign teachers led by Wei Wei were even more extroverted. After greeting Dean Hu, he directly brought a group of people to the stage.
“Everybody put your hands up!”
With Wei Wei’s start, more and more people boldly stood up and cheered and danced.
Meng Hechuan was close by, and was pushed onto the stage as well.
When he came to his senses again, he had been squeezed next to Bai Yan.
The atmosphere is lively.
I don’t know who pressed the button with the glittering sequins, and in an instant, countless golden hand-thrown sequins were scattered above the stage.
The music in her ears hadn’t stopped yet. Bai Yanwei panted and handed the microphone to Meng Hechuan beside her, with a smile in her eyes, “Can you do it?”
The colorful sequins reflected strong light, which fell on the girl’s face and clearly illuminated the sweat on her forehead.
“Chief Engineer Meng, why don’t you smile like everyone else?”
The sequins fell on Bai Yan’s head. She slightly moved the microphone away and asked him in a low voice, “You are not suspicious of me because I can sing Cantonese songs, are you?”
Meng Hechuan didn’t answer, but he still didn’t jump up and down with his hands raised like the others at the scene.
Bai Yan shrugged. The atmosphere was cheerful and she would not let Meng Hechuan’s suspicion of her ruin her good mood.
She raised the microphone again and looked at Meng Hechuan, still trying to get this cold and noble young master to get excited, “Chief Engineer Meng, don’t ruin the atmosphere. You should relax when you need to. Come on! I’ll teach you to sing, come on!”
“Let the evening breeze blow gently, accompanying this delicate flower fragrance as if blessing you and me…”
It was just an ordinary line of lyrics sung by her, but it made Meng Hechuan miraculously feel as if he could really smell the fragrance of flowers.
He glanced at the girl next to him, and the corners of his lips gradually and slightly curved up.
